@stargirlsusan This monstrous arrangement of an early 18th c. church cantata movement --- originally scored for tenor, violin and basso continuo --- has very little to do with baroque expression and much more to do with late 19th century romantic expression.
Of course, this is an arrangement with Stokowski signature. When I came with curiosity to watch this video I did not think I will find that kind of Bach we think it should be (and who knows in truth what is the real way to play Bach? of course, this is a bit far of any idea) but the great thing I listen here is that Bach, in anyway is interpreted or imagined, is always MAJESTIC!
Why you don t lissen to the performance by Karl Richter and compair. I think that there are much better recordings out there than this one. I think , its the higher tuning and no real idea behind it. To me , it sounds someone wants to destroy the real Bach. No good- I don t think , critisisme is a bad think !
Oh my... this is meant to be MUCH faster, and not so heavy handed and full of friction. This sounds like a movie sound track, and is not true to the Baroque style.
@dramamajor1985 Actually, I have a degree in music, of which music from the Baroque period is my specialty... and J.S. Bach happens to be the subject I study the most. So I have EVERY idea of what I'm talking about. This interpretation is not true to Bach's composition, nor the Baroque style in which one would expect a typical early 1700s consort to play. Don't talk shit unless you can bring some bonafide education to the table. I have my letters after my name, what do you have?
@benz981 Actually, I like the sense of freefalling that Leopold gives to his editions of Bach's work. I think I imitated it well in the edition for string ensemble I'm working on of Bach's Ciaconna for Violin.
Arnold Schoenberg a aussi orchestré Bach avec un aussi bon effet.
Stravinski a orchestré Monteverdi.
Le Bach Ricercar orchestré par Webern est plus intéressant, car la sectionalisation montre une approche de la 2ème École de Vienne au traitement de thèmes.
This arrangement is a brutal monstrosity

I'd like to buy this, but CDs of the Stokowski Transcriptions sell at a very high price on Amazon.com.

This Bach's earliest cantata was mainly influenced by Dieterich Buxehude, clear role model for Bach.

Also a heaping helping of other fantastic Stokowski orchestrations.
Just drop me a line at NeptuneVII -- at -- ATT -- dot -- net, and I'll give you a list of the Stokowski orchestrations that I have.
