@DuaneTheCat Mate!? Where is Duane from originally I wonder:-)
Anyway, great video and nicely put together, great weather for flying, great scenery and naked chicks too! I best get my ppl(H) fast, after all, chopper pilots get it up quicker, so the saying goes, and with chicks like her around you would need too:-)) Don't tell your 'mate' I said that will you!!:-)
I'm thinking of a ppl and I like the look of the S-300, even if it is made from meccano:-)
@cedycedric hey mate, try looking at pprune.org, it's a forum for pilots and contains lots of advice. Also the Bristow Academy website (heli.com). Good luck
I believe Bristow grossly missrepresents the costs of this training. The training is hard but paying for this training is the really hard part. Don't be fooled by the advertised prices. It ends up being much more, more than twice what is advertised. Expect to pay more than $25,000 for a Private Pilot certificate and $30,000+ if you try for an instrument rating. For most people, it's prohibitively expensive!
You are right it is very expensive and anyone considering it should go into it with their eyes open. There is an element of truth to what you say about being wary of the advertised prices. However, they are correct for someone who is capable and lucky enough to get through everything in the minimum hours. I say lucky because your instructor plays a big role and they may be good, they may not. Aircraft availability could also hold you up (in my day anyway) but less likely to be a problem now
At Bristow in Titusville, FL, NO ONE has ever finished the course in the time advertised or the minimum time required by the FAA. I'm talking about the Private Pilot and Instrument. The sad part is many students get near the completion of the training and then run out of money so they end up with nothing.
Not true. I did the JAA course and the majority of my class got through the whole thing in minimum hours. The FAA side is different but most of the guys on my course also passed the FAA PPL with around the minimum in total time. Sure, people must be aware that a) not everyone is cut out for flying helicopters and b) you darned well need to work hard to get there in minimum hours but your sweeping statement that no-one acheives it is patently untrue and misleading...
OK, I'll amend the statement but it's NOT misleading. In 5 years of experience with Bristow and it's former HAI, I've never seen anyone get their certificate in the minimum time. Not for JAA or FAA. I suppose it's possible but very very few people can do it. It's not the norm. Their marketing program is based upon getting the certificates in minimum time. Takes the average person, with tons of hard work and good luck with the weather, about 20% more time than advertised.
Nah, leave the statement - discussion is valid and prospective students need to be aware, even if we dont quite agree on the severity.
For PPLs and/or FAA you probably know more than I do, though I can tell you categorically that for JAA CPL it is NOT true.
The following are rough #s for JAA24, to illustrate: 18 students started the 1yr JAA CPL(H) course, of whom 2 pulled out (1 to a PPL only, 1 to the FAA CPL) because of the academic side and 1 left v early on due to career prospects.
Of the other 15 defo 3 passed the CPL test in well UNDER the reqd hours (just had to finish the hrs before applying for the cert) and I can only think of maybe 3 who probably took more than the hrs.
So, sure - I agree not everyone makes it in the hours and people should budget sensibly on needing extra hours, but on the JAA CPL side it is a reasonable ask if you are cut out for it and work hard.
Just my opinion - but I'd suggest anyone wanting to get a JAA CPL should make sure theyve a) taken at least 1 trial lesson in advance (to see if they actually enjoy it and have some aptitude) and b) ensure they are fully aware that there is lots of academic work.
I am currently in Bristow academy. First off, my compliments on this video. It really shows what a day looks like here.
And if you want to know the rates, or want to know what the current waiting list is (and I think it isn't too bad right now), you should contact Anisha with Bristow Academy. She's the one that can tell you all about it.
If you don't want to be on a waiting list you should look into Bristow Academy New Iberia, LA. Right now your student flight time is virtually unlimited.. There are plenty of instructors and helicopters just sitting around waiting for new students.
stuandgromit, I don't think the waiting list is anything like what it was a year ago(credit crunch effect). Word is that there are spaces on the May JAA course anyway.
Thanks for that message..I inquired last November and the next available course was Jan 2010..I cant start as yet as it happens..hopefully work something out this year..do you have an email address so i could pen you about a million questions??if you dont mind, trying to worl out which course is best, and a few other details..cheers...Stu..

Hey ,
I'm 17 years old boy from Belgium and recently I was thinking what I want do with my life .
The aswer was to become a helicopter pilot ...
But I have a couple of questions for real helicopter pilots .
- What can I expect with the ground lessons / exams ? Is it a lot of math ? , Is it a lot ?
- Is it hard to get a job as pilot ? Does it pay ?
Is there someone who I can mail for questions ? Send me a private message please
Thanks

@wilsonbh Maybe in your time son....I did it in well under the required time and took my JAA GFT at 135 hrs.
It appears that nowadays the younger folk are distracted and don't seem focused enough
