I have one of these and it sounds like complete crap... THAT IS WHY I LOVE IT... Dude is right, the only way to make it sound good is above the 12'th fret on the neck pickup... and if you use it with a Tube Screamer or a Blues Driver, it sounds like heaven (It's a "feel" thing... just one of those crazy sounds that inspires you). This pedal is a "one trick pony". Search for "John Mayer Black Cat" and you'll hear what this pedal sounds like...
Roger Mayer invented the Octavio. He has said that the pedal in the Jimi Hendrix museum isnt Jimis Pedal. I own Jimi's Actual Octavia that he used at Band of gypsys concert. Its the only Octavia that Roger Mayer has ever documented as being Jimi Hendrixs pedal. Dunlop wasnt allowed to take the pedal apart. They made a mistake in the wiring. Chicgo Iron took apart Jimis real pedal and he has duplicated the tycobrahe Octavia really well. They are the only ones that know the layout of Jimis wiring
I have one and the instructions to get the Band of Gypsies sound, is too roll the fuzz all the way back and max the gain.
then you get that Who Knows Bell tone sound.
ofcourse standing in front of scafflolds filled with Marshalls would help.
This pedal has given me trouble, but when it works it does do what it says it will. that bell tone, outer space sound. the fuzz actually makes it sound like and ordinary fuzz, go it all about the gain. the fuzz drowns out the octave
@MayThisBeLurve Do you turn the level knob all the way down until it clicks off? Even if it's unplugged, it still drains the battery. Worst design feature ever. I still forget to turn it off sometimes and I've had it for years.
I heard that the Octavio and all vintage and nos pedals sounds more original when you use Carbon Zinc batteries. Danelectro make some great carbon batteries.
now this pedal, and the other Hendrix pedals by Dunlop, sound fantastic. However, I feel like the chords I'm using for the Fuzz Face and Wah take away from the tone (since they are very cheap). What Cables (both longer and patch cables) would you recommend? Thanks
i want to know when he used this pedal? did he use it for 5 min and say "this sucks!" WTF I think his octave fuzz in Band Of Gypsies and it sounds a lot like the Fender Blender to me.
Had one of these for 2 days before taking it back, total one trick pony. It is a faithful recreation but really is only good for some lead lines. the tone is pretty nasty sounding, completely poor for chord work, circuits were very basic and unrefined back then, but if you want to pay that much money for a few seconds of a solo then go for it.
Hendrix made good use of one of these, but what if you do not have a Strat or a guitar with a neck pickup? Can you use it if youre guitar has just one pickup?
@RippedPantsBand The schematics are quite different. The fuzzface uses voltage feedback biasing, whereas the octavia's fuzz part has a fixed bias circuit. Also the octaving circuit adds it's own clipping distortion, although I don't know how much this contributes to the sound. If you don't know what this means, thats ok, I only know this because I diy-built an octavia :) In effect, the FuzzFace has a more mushy soft type distortion, whereas the octavia is harsher, more rigid.
I like the sound and I'm definatly thinking about purchasing it, but I don't know if I should purchase the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face first, or this. Any suggestions?
Can't you use the 9v battery connector that comes with the Godlyke Deluxe Power supply? (It has the 9v battery connector which then connects to your daisychain line to the power supply) Thanks
He used this pedal for purple haze solo and that's pretty much it. Good pedal , i have it and i use it to get feed back and higher octave when want them
@claudiodifazio14 Off the top of my head i know he used it in Voodoo Chile Blues and House Burning Down. He really used the fuck out if it on those songs too. Classics..
If you want octave up with this original design, sustain needs to come from other ways ( amp distortion or a pedal). That's just the nature of the old circuit.
@waaaters funny with this effect, it really depends on the amp settings...I plugged my octavio in the shop and it sounded like this video, kinda disssapointed, bought it anyway, then took it home and SHHAZAAMMM! Balls out endless sustain, simply incredible. Really weird effect, but I love it..if I lost it, I'd buy one immediately to replace it...mine sounds like the gearmandude demo...endless sustain, but I know the issues you are dealing with sustain wise, but don't know why.

@loganbramhall1989 The Voodoo Lab Proctavia isn't a true replica of Hendrix main Octavia, it's also a replica of an octavia hendrix never used. You can mail Voodoo Lab to confirm this.

@GaudyPersoneNonGrate If you have a voodoo labs pedal power pack. You can use one of the battery clip adaptors to link it to the power pack. Saves you drilling into a classic pedal. :)

personaly i love solid maple to me it looks better what makes the big difference it the varnish some like heavy varnish and some like very little varnish
@Nimrod9458 i would have to disagree...rosewood is warmer, more mellow....and maple is brighter, more pronounced and punchier.....maple is also a smoother wood so sliding around the neck is easier....like PGS said its a little difference...but still a difference....thats why guitarists will have the same guitar with diff fretboard woods...

Ah man, the HBE UFO is the best deal for a fuzz octave pedal. Superior fuzz on it's own with an octave above that works across the entire fretboard. Sells for less than the one trick Octavio!
Im lookin for a good octave fuzz to use strictly as a boost and $170 seems kinda steep (considering it will just be a boost pedal). can someone recommend another octave fuzz?
I dunno, just look around music shops and ebay and what not. I just put this pedal on lay-buy at a Shmitt's Music store, it was NEW, on sale for $99. Next to it was a Hendrix fuzz face new for 109. If you're patient you can find good deals
