  • I was wondering about scout scopes. everyone saying there better for quick target aquisition but they have a much smaller field of veiw. do you find them quicker on running game etc? can you shoot well with them at longer ranges. are there any disadvantages over the standard eye relif scopes. im lookin at putting one on 30/30 for hogs and being able to shoot ocasional comps with the xs sight same as on the rifle your reviewing. Any info is apreciated

  • Using a two power scope, you can leave both eyes open, for a very wide field of view.

    Jeff

  • What's the range with this round accurate at 80+ yards?

  • I have sucessfully fired the 45-70 at targets as far away as 1125 yards, and better shooters regularly shoot small groups with the 45-70 out past 1000 yards, and even as far away as 1500 yards. In the ordance trials in 1872 and 1873, the US Army fired the 45-70 onto target at over one mile.

    Jeff

  • How will a 190 lbs 5foot eleven male do against the recoil of this rifle?

  • Should have no problem at all - I am five-eleven, and just over 200 pounds.

  • Hey I do not know if you will see this message but how is the recoil with this? I consider myself a smaller guy at 140 pounds. I shoot 7mm rem mag no problem standing is this comparable?

    Thanks.

  • More of a push with the 45-70 compared to the sharp hit with that 7mm. It will be no problem for you.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom

    Thanks

  • Love this gun 405 with 62g of h335 seeing a little over 2000fps with magnum primers. Hornady ftx 325 seeing 2487 very powerful round

  • which round is more accurate the 30-30 or the 45-70

  • Neither cartridge is more accurate than the other.

    Jeff

  • I bought a Marlin .450 back a few for possible grizzly in my tent. However I thought I might like to hunt with it but it jumps very bad! 6" at 25 yards with the hornady evolutions. Sight dropped on barrel at lowest setting. Think a scope has enough compensation? I am thinking of getting a slip on recoil & jump reducer. Ammo seems to be only hornady available. Any ideas?

  • A scope would work, or a taller front sight.

    jeff

  • @Tossdart If you like to get fast and more exact shots in short distance try a red dot sight. A slip on recoil reducer is not a bad idea.

    /Sophie

  • @LillaSophie Thanks I had thought of that but will go with a 4x Steel lite 2 I have had since 77. I really would like to stay with sights but just jumps too much. Should have gone with 45/70 guide gun with magnaport but got greedy for power in tent te he. Griz still best not stick his nose in.

  • @Tossdart Yup it is the .450 it kicks more mercilessly as it has more powder than a 45-70. The long barrel version probably would not bounce so much. As far as I know only Hornady is licenced to make ammo for the .450. I'm not gun poor in any case lol just thought it would be fun to actually hunt with instead of a tent protection only. I'll get it sorted thanks for replies.

  • @Tossdart

When training a little with it i saw that it shot better after a while. It takes a little time to get used to the type of recoil it gives i think. I still think red dot sigt is perfect for griz and boar. Its fast if you dont want to use open sights. Or laser at night of course, laser/flashlight.

What is 4x Steel lite 2? And what is Magnaport? Exuse me for stupid questions;) /Sophie

  • Hi. Barnes ammonition has good reputation and they say it works well in the Marlin. It will be short distances but 6" in 25 yards is not good. Standing at 35 i had at most 4" when i tried it the first time. It must be that the rifle does not suit your shooting well.

  • Sorry, but a scope on a lever gun is just wrong!!!! Lol.

  • Yes it is removable

  • Will someone please tell me if you can remove the scope rail from it? If I get one I don't plan on using a scope and I would love to remove that rail. Thanks.

  • The rail is removable.

    jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom Thank you very much.

  • Stout loads aren't a bad thing when in Bear country.

  • I fired that gun at the Turner gun show!

  • Thanks for posting a review on this gun on your website. I found it very helpful. I shot one of these guns before and its a really fun gun to shoot. I plan on buying one as soon as I can.

  • i couldnt stop looking at that beard.. fit for a true dwarf!!!

  • How much was it and where did you buy it? Local gun shop or online store?

  • I got it direct from Marlin. For details, we have a full review in our Archive section.

    Jeff

  • hey Jeff, another great vid. the only thing holding me back from buying the guide gun was the capacity.. looks like marlin has solved that problem with another fine quality bush gun..

  • is it a loud gun, i mean most guns are loud but can you feel the percussion of the round like 30-06 rounds?

  • Jeff. I need an opinion. I have a friend that has exactly that laminated, stainless 45 70 you are shooting with a burris scope .he wants 500.00. I already have a marlin 444s I bought 28 years ago. I really dont need another rifle.....the price is right..what do I do!!?

  • If you are able to buy it and you don't, you'll wish you had. You can always get at least what you paid for it later if you want. I'd go for it.

  • @Gunblastdotcom done............Im buying it. it also comes with 180 rounds of factory ammo.

Thanks. I needed the "push" Jeff

  • That's a great deal - the ammo alone is worth $300!

  • Good job, Jeff

  • Jeff, When are u going to do a review on Marlins XS7 Rifle... Would like to see it in 7mm-08...Great Reviews

  • I would like to do so soon.

    Jeff

  • That beard!

  • great vid, and awesome vest!

  • i can gree with that but the six really cannot reliably takkke down game larger than elk aat its maximu distance and that is pushing it. if yyou are going to talk aabout longange powwer, the 7mm also has to be looked at because it can fly farther and straighter than the ot six. bullet wight also has alot to do with stopping power. the 4570 has ssome bullets that are more than double the weight of ot sixes. theyy are completely different rounds though so they cant be compared head to head.

  • Jeff: Thought I would take a moment to thank you for all the videos you post. Such a pleasant guy, and a joy to listen to. The 45-70 has sparked my interest, and seeing it in action is very helpful. Hope you have a great summer, and thanks again!

  • Thank you, Sir.

    Jeff

  • 30-06 or a 300 Win mag would kill this gun.... powerful and awesome range with sheer knockdown power.... Thumbs up for good ol' rem 700

  • @abm92296 id liketo see the day when an ot six could compare to the ballistics of a 45-70 when talking about stopping power up to 200 yds. it is good for longer range but much less stopping power

  • @Hunterman841 The six in my opinion is way better because it still has some knockdown power... well... a lot of knockdown power. Yea youre right... the 45-70 would win for power at maybe 200 yds, but thats it. Why have a gun for power if it can only go 200 yds effectively without doing a nose dive because of a fat*ss bullet? A tweaked 06 is capable of shooting WELL over a thousand yards if you got a little knowledge and skill of the bullet's flight path, etc. Want more knockdown? 240 grain 30 06

  • I cant wait to get mine.

  • I cant wait to get mine.

  • my dogs name is marlin <3

  • Sir I am thinking about buying a semi wad cutter mold for my 44 mag lever action marlin... Will semi wad cutters cycle in a lever action rifle smooth?

  • Yes they will.

    jeff

  • I wish Marlin would wake the fuck up and offer the Model 1894 in the same configuration as the SBL....Non ported 16" Stainless 1894..Big loop lever..and that full length scout rail w/ intergral ghost ring sights.. 357 and 44 magnum... and 45 lc....

Instead their obsessed with making rifles for Alaskan Grizzly Bear encounters...

There is a growing demand for a tactical lever action in hard hitting magnum handgun rounds..and as usual ..Marlins fast asleep at the wheel.

  • Nice levergun, sir! I'm in the market for a GG. My dad loved 45-70's and was into SASS big time. I got all his hardware after he died and they're all beautiful. I now have a Browning 1885 Highwall, Remington No 1 Rolling Block @ 12lbs, and an awesome Uberti Collection with a Springfield Trapdoor Carbine, a Deluxe Sharps 34" Heavy Octo-barrel ,2 Nickel/Pearl .45LC Topbreaks 1-3.5" and 1-7", Nickel/Pearl .45LC 1875 Outlaw 5.5" and a Polished Nickel Coachgun. So Marlins are good rifles then?

  • Marlins are excellent, always have been.

  • that is a really short barrel for this rifle

  • power wise how much more powerful is the 45-70 than the 7 mm?

  • I apologize for the delay in answering. I have been at a shoot in Arkansas for a few days, with no access to email.

It depends upon how you measure power. Properly loaded, the 45-70 can take elephant reliably, but the 7mm is also a fine caliber of cartridges.

    jeff

  • @jackncope I know you werent asking me but a 45 70 is much heavier and has alot more power. it can only go out to about 200 yards and than it does a nose dive and looses power. a 7 mm is a much lighter load and it doesnt have the knock down power and penetration like the 45 70, but it is one of the furthest shooting load you can buy with conventional ammo and it can easily take deer size game up to 800 even 1000 yards.

  • Have you seen or used the Cabela's Leverevolution scope which was made for this rifle? If so do yo have any thoughts on this scope...Thanks

  • I have no experience with that scope.

    Jeff

  • I WANT IT SEND ME ONE IN GREECE PLEASE SIR

  • We don't sell them, we just shoot them and tell folks about them.

  • @Gunblastdotcom ΟΚ

  • @ZERVASful can you own guns in greece? just curious,

  • @bastardo39 YES ONLY FOR IPSC <0.22---9mm--0.38--0.40---0.45 no magnum..and we have a lot of problems with the law and police....we can have 2 pistols only.

  • Hi, I got a few questions, if ya got time to answer them. I'm lookin into gettin a marlin lever action for hunting/survival situations. But I don't know much about them. I'm think I'm set on gettin a marlin, but can't decide on a caliber. I've heard good things about 30-30 and 45-70, but I'm also interested in the pistol calibers also (.357, .44) but I want enough stopping power to take Down a bear, but I also want range and accuracy. Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks.

  • If large brown bear are on your list, get the 45-70, and load it with Buffalo Bore ammunition.

    Jeff

  • What the....holy moly Mr. Quinn, I've never noticed that you're a lefty before!

  • Have been as long as I can remember!

  • Thanks for all the excellent videos, they are very informative. I got my 45-70 guide gun 2 years ago and am in love with it. Where we hunt there is a lot of heavy bush so its absolutely perfect. I am very happy with hornady lever rev. ammo because its got more than enough power but I do wish that we could get some buffalo bore or grizzly ammo.

  • You can order Buffalo Bore ammo online at Buffalobore-dot-com

    Jeff

  • My new favorite rifle!!!

  • I was wondering what would feed better in a lever action a round nose bullet or a flat nose bullet I'm leaning towards the round nose but not sure.

  • Either will feed great in a levergun, as the cartridge is lifted to enter into the chamber.

    Jeff

  • Hello Gunblastdotcom, I just recieved my 45 70. I called Cabelas close to home, asked if they had any in stock, they said no. I then asked if they could check the directory of all the stores. They said ok, checked and found 8, I asked for just one store. Called the store, checked if they had one, asked for them to hold it, gave personel info, then called Cabelas close to home. Asked for them to contact the Cabelas that had the rifle, they did and in two weeks I got a call to pick up

  • sir I'm looking to buy lever action rifle but confuse what catridge I am split between 30.30, 45-70, 444, 450. I want some thing which is a true grizzly stopper and can travel a good distance 200 plus yard. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

  • I would get the 45-70, and use Buffalo Bore ammo for the serious stuff.

    jeff

  • Love the flag!!!!

  • What's your opinion on the ARMSCOR 1911's?

  • Pretty good weapons.

    jeff

  • did you know that the large cocking loop was invented by john wayne

  • whats about the max range for a deadly shot on a deer?

  • The weapon has the power to drop a deer as far away as you can accurately place your shot. For me, with this rifle, I would limit myself to about 300 yards.

    Jeff

  • By the way Jeff, it's your original review of this rifle that persuaded me that this was a rifle I had to have if that helps you any. I probably would have never heard about it if it wasn't for you. So thanks for the great reviews. Now if I could just get my grubby paws on it.

  • Why can't I find this rifle anywhere?

Everywhere I look has it listed but not in stock.

I'm on those "email me when it gets here" lists of several big gun dealers for quite some time and nothing.

Anyone know where I can get it?

  • The supply is still running far behind demand on those.

    Jeff

  • how much eye relief does that scope have? that can't be a normal scope can it?

  • It's a Scout scope from the Leupold Custom Shop. See the referenced review for more info.

  • Can i come to your house for the zombie apocplypes?

  • thats a big bullet moving very fast.. damn

  • purdy

  • My friend just picked up one of these bad boys for bear protection. For medium to close range, I think it will be perfect for the role.

  • How would you describe the color of the stock? I like the greyish look and don't know what the offical name for it is.

  • It's just a gray laminate.

  • That a good looking gun

  • How many rounds does it hold in the chamber?

  • I apologize for the delay in answering. I have been at Gunsite in Arizona shooting some new Ruger products all week, with no access to email.

It holds six in the magazine, plus one in the chamber.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom Jeff,

Enjoyed seeing you in the coverage videos from Gunsite,

any word on how soon you can get us a review on

    Ruger's new scout?

  • Nothing yet. For now, my review from Gunsite is all that i have.

    Jeff

  • @Jaahaah the magazine holds six......but sadly, the chamber...only holds one at a time....

  • Jeff how do you think an EOTECH XPS and 3x magnifier would run on this?

  • Pretty well, but I prefer an ACOG personally. They are always on, and never need batteries.

    Jeff

  • Why the target turrets on a scout scope? Seems they would get in the way when using this rifle in its intended role as a brush gun.

  • It makes hitting at extended range with the 45/70 much easier.

    Jeff

  • Nice gun. If it's possible, could yall do a review of the handi rifle, if any of yall or yall's friends have one? I'm looking into one in 45-70. Gotta love the 45-70 round, and the handi-rifle is dirt cheap too.

  • One of these Marlins in .44 would go great with my brothers Ruger .44 Blackhawk :D

  • Jeff, have you ever chronographed your 1895 SBL with buffalo bore ammo tipped with 430 grain bullets (item 8A) ?

  • I have not.

    Jeff

  • Are you Santa taking a break of? Can I have one like this for Christmas???

  • Great video Jeff. I am picking up a Marlin 1895SBL today in large part because of your excellent and informative video.

  • Great video Jeff. I am picking up a Marlin 1895SBL today in large part because of your excellent and informative video.

  • Hey all I Great vids , can you guys help me find a vido that shows me the mechanism of a pump action shotgun , Im sure I have seen a vid like that But I cant find it now!

    thank you

  • im glad this guy isnt just some dumb redneck who has an assload of guns. he knows what the hell hes talking about. i reeeally like this design btw, i think itd be great for alaskan bear. not only for protection, but also as a main rifle. too bad theyre a little pricey for me right now. thanks for sharing.

  • @mousepad1123 no hes a smart redneck with an assload of guns.. and has some cool videos. .

  • Beautiful! Thanks for this one Jeff!

  • i need a leather bandoleir for this

  • Contact levergunleather-dot-com.

    Jeff

  • epic beard

  • righteous beard

  • u know of any modern .45-90 lever actions?

  • There are some Winchester 1886 recently manufactured 45-90 leverguns available.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom u see alot of .45-0 rifles now days, and loading data and hell factory loads are pretty common, but what do u think about the .45-90, with modern powder and such u think theres enough of a ft. lb energy to have a -90?

  • With smokeless powder, you gain very little over the 45-70. With black powder, the 45-90 is superior.

    Jeff

  • @davism4a1

I had DRC convert my Marlin 1895 Cowboy to a .45-90 earlier this year. It is the first modern marlin .45-90 conversion that I know of. It is easily capable of 4,000 ft-lbs energy at the modern marlin pressures (a .45-90 express if you will). Check my posts on the Marlin Owners Index for details and pictures.

  • jeff i live in aus and hunt wild pigs all year round. I currently shoot a winchester 30-30 in the scrub and a B.S.A .308 out in the open. Scrub shooting ranges from thick lignum, to very sparse timber, visibility out to round about 150 metres. Ive studied all the ballistic charts under the sun but just wanted a 45-70 shooters opinion. I dont personally know anyone in australia who hunts with one. Reckon the 45-70 would suit this type of hunting out to 200 yds or is there something better?

  • It would be a perfect choice, using modern high performance ammunition.

    Jeff

  • How's the recoil compare to say, a 30-30, 308 or 30-06? I realize the ammunition you use makes a difference, but can you get relatively light loads for whitetail deer?

I was thinking of picking up the Guide version of this with the standard bluing.

  • Standard 45/70 ammo is pretty mild, but still plenty of power for deer and hogs.

    Jeff

  • thumbs up for fallout 3 :D

  • I love your hideout in the woods. Wish I one like that. my getaway has neighbors now. Although I could probably get them to move :-)

  • 2400fps?!?!?!?!? From an 18.5 inch barrel?!?!? I dont think so. Not even on a good day. The stated claims for Buffalo Bore ammo comes from shooting that round in a 24 inch pressure barrel. I shoot both a guide gun and a Marlin GBL, both with 18.5 inch barrels. Across my Oehler chronograph the buffalo bore ammo just breaks 2080 to 2130 fps. Your claim of a 300 grain bullet at 2400fps out of that gun need to be substantiated with proof by chronograph.

  • Chronograph data is listed in the referenced review.

2357 fps ten feet from the muzzle translates to right at 2400 at the muzzle. I chronographed the data myself. Buffalo Bore claims only 2300 from an 18.5 inch barrel, and 2350 from longer barrels, but that is conservative. My test lot of ammo gave 2357 ten feet out, with the conditions shown.

  • Extremely cold temperatures might result in lower velocities, and for that reason, Buffalo Bore does not claim the top velocities recorded, but instead a realistic, conservative number. Buffalo Bore tests their ammo in real guns, not in pressure barrels. Again, please read the review for all chronograph data.

    Jeff

  • Nice video, I love this gun! A bit of advice for the wind, you can put form over the video camera mic holes, I hold mine on with spray glue, it works really good. That will stop the wind from hitting the mic. Shalom and may the force be with you!

  • Jeff, I am looking at getting a marlin 1895 big lever in blued... i am wondering about your modified iron sights and what is the eye relief distance on your custom shop leupold scope... can you provide me with any details on your modifications and any other modifications that you would recommend...

  • The Leupold scope has plenty of eye relief, like around nine inches. The sights are the XS lever rail system. Please see the referenced article for more info.

    Jeff

  • Lefty shooter ! like me

  • Hey thanks for the vid's i do enjoy them and keep them coming, safe shooting and Marlin should be giving u a commission cause my next lever action will be the Marlin 1895sbl 45-70.

  • that gun is sexy

  • a real western gunslinger :P

  • I think i just came a little bit. Been wanting a lever action for a while. What did that set u back after all said and done?

    Ike

  • i use a 30-06 i like useing my 243 tho lol some times i use my 444

  • awesome vest harley is the only way to go also what state do you live in brother?

  • Left Handed Shooter??? ALRIGHT!

  • was lookin at my xlr 4570 for about 12 months just thinkin how cool it would be to extend the tube mag and take 4 or 6 inches off the barrel. i guess they read my mind. the new 336 with the short barrel and laminated stock in 30/30 is rather tempting too.

  • whats up thanx for the vid man. i was wondering what kind of scope u have on that 45-70. i recently picked up a 450 marlin. what scope would u suggest for that?

  • I would get a 2 to 7 power Leupold Compact.

    jeff

  • That's a great gun, I would love to see one produced in the 405 winchester.

  • I want one! I think I'd go with the classic 22" barrel, though. The stainless would be nice in damp weather.

  • Sweet frickin' rifle, I've been wanting one of these things for a while now. Nice setup with the scope too.

  • That beard you have is awesome

  • Any thoughts on a 45 LC or 44 MAG lever action?

  • Marlin is a good choice if you do not want to shoot the heavy bullets. Cimarron is a good choice for a 92 style action.

    Jeff

  • @whtdrgn101 Too light. Always opt for MORE POWER!! ;-)

  • Its A great gun! And stout as hell too.

  • me likey !!!

  • Those don't eject and burn you, being left handed?

  • Not at all.

    Jeff

  • Can you twirl that around like "The Rifleman" with that lever?

  • Only with a lot of practice, and the calm assurance that it was loaded with blanks!

  • @Gunblastdotcom You should make a video of that. I havn't seen a video of someone twirling a lever-action (with the exeption of "the Rifleman" opening credits) anywhere on Youtube. If someone makes a video or knows of one please let me know.

  • @Gunblastdotcom hhahahah i can see that backfiring on you (pun)

  • I will be purchasing a lever action rifle when i sell my bmw, i do want the .45-70 caliber rifle, it is a good home defense weapon and i need to kill some boar out at the land. I'd rather go old school than buy an over rated assault rifle .223 or .308, i love the old calibers like a .44 magnum, what would be the absolute best lever action, when it comes to weight, recoil, quality?

  • Marlin Model 39 if you want a quality rifle with low recoil. For more power, the SBL is hard to beat.

    Jeff

  • ive shot that same exact rifle, great gun but the that little steal flap where you feed the shells in to load it was razor sharp a sliced half way though my thumb.

  • That is a GORGEOUS lever carbine. Very practical set up the way you've got it.

The kick from those Buff Bore .45-70 loads looked daunting. My own recoil tolerance tops out at a .308 Win from a full-sized rifle.

  • Dude i love how you add a history lesson on the rifle i think its awsome...

  • mine is ported to the max and i can rack all 4 of my rounds in less than 5 sec...withouth missing the target

  • Im a traidin in my old Hawkin Gun fer this un for I hed back up to my homstead along the Snake.

Them injuns plum neer rn me out last year and Im a meanin tu stay.

  • Amen brother!!! Praise the lord and pass the ammunition!

  • Very beautiful carbine! Five stars from Italy.

Mr. Quinn please, how much does it cost?

    Thanks

  • MSRP is $1014 US.

    Jeff

  • Very nice rifle, I love the look of that gun.
