I have watched the whole video. All the cubs belong to one lioness in the pride, when she tries to defend them, she is attacked and chased away by other lionesses in the pride, who are in heat and are ready to mate. In the end she is found sitting and crying.

Ok the reason why this Lion killed the cubs are two reasons. Firstly they were not the biological offspring. Secondly in the video that is not featured prior, this rival defeats the father (the Biological to these cubs). The Lion walks away which means the rival gets to mate with the Mother of the cubs he ended up killing. Its called "removing excess baggage".

Actually, the worst part is the mother to the cubs just watches. I was horrified when I was approx. 8 and mom didn't realize the nature vid about lions was about to get very nasty. *The 1st and only other video like this I've watched, and regretted watching* I remember sobbing and screaming at the TV as I couldn't understand why the mother lion just watched as the male systematically killed her cubs one by one.
The mother lion has no choice. If she intervenes, the Lion will kill her. Animals lose their cubs all the time. Mothers of all species leave their cubs to die when they get sick and can't keep up. It is an accepted part of their life cycle. The lioness will go into heat shortly after and have new cubs and do her best to raise those.
The absolutely worst part, though, is that while the attacks are savage the lions don't seem to care about at least quickly killing the poor cubs. When I see...used to see nature docs lions frequently latch onto their prey's throats to kill them at least fairly quickly. I've only seen two videos like this, and both were nightmarish w/ the lion almost seeming to want to make the cubs suffer.
this lion just won a battle with the male lion that fathered these cubs. So now that he owns the pride, he will kill the cubs and mate with the lionesses to father his own generation. The sad parts of the animal kingdom.

When resources are scarce, and you are going to have your own cubs on the way soon, the most logical course of action is to rid the pride of anything not necessary. It's what works for them, I'm sure there were lions that had a heart long, long ago, but they and their prides most likely died because of that. Male lions are assholes though, but still, would you rather have asshole lions, or no lions?

Ok the reason why this Lion killed the cubs are two reasons. Firstly they were not the biological offspring. Secondly in the video that is not featured prior, this rival defeats the father (the Biological to these cubs). The Lion walks away which means the rival gets to mate with the Mother of the cubs he ended up killing. Its called "removing excess baggage".

@fredocine They know they cannot survive without a male. Allowing him to take the cubs is an offering of sort. They won't be happy while he does, but they won't put up much of a fight either. I find it funny that everyone is so one sided about all this. An old male dies or loses a fight, abandoning his pride, the females willingly allow their cubs to die, but no one says a word about that. I see our feminized culture where women can do no wrong has even extended into the animal kingdom now ;)

Killing off the weaker males, then killing off his young ensures that only the strong males will survive. What is the point in taking over a pride, and then raising all of the weak males of whose father he just killed? Why would he want his cubs to starve to raise his foes cubs? If survival of your species is the top priority, it is the most logical thing to do. Seriously, grow up.

It is sad, but in Nature is this population control, the lion lives 90% on instinct, the chance are that the cubs were the cubs of a rival male, many animals even adorable meerkat will kill the offspring of rivals to ensure the survival of their own, in our early history we did it too, only because we evolved with a sense of strong compassion are we horrified by such behavior today.

Actually, the worst part is the mother to the cubs just watches. I was horrified when I was approx. 8 and mom didn't realize the nature vid about lions was about to get very nasty. *The 1st and only other video like this I've watched, and regretted watching* I remember sobbing and screaming at the TV as I couldn't understand why the mother lion just watched as the male systematically killed her cubs one by one.

The mother lion has no choice. If she intervenes, the Lion will kill her. Animals lose their cubs all the time. Mothers of all species leave their cubs to die when they get sick and can't keep up. It is an accepted part of their life cycle. The lioness will go into heat shortly after and have new cubs and do her best to raise those.

The absolutely worst part, though, is that while the attacks are savage the lions don't seem to care about at least quickly killing the poor cubs. When I see...used to see nature docs lions frequently latch onto their prey's throats to kill them at least fairly quickly. I've only seen two videos like this, and both were nightmarish w/ the lion almost seeming to want to make the cubs suffer.

@evilcorporationBook This is actually one of the reasons the lions would survive. By killing the previous male`s cubs, the new male ensure`s that his genes will be passed on to the next generation. After all, the new male, or males, was likely stronger then the previous one.
