dude when i had pontoons a whole bunch of people would ask me " what the heck are those" and i loved those looks that the lift operators gave me. at alta people would be like holy crap pontoons!
@1veryreal Can't really say for sure as I haven't ridden the Hellbents. FWIW's, Hellbents are twin-tips and are undergoing design iterations over time whereas the Pontoon has remained the same ski Shane designed year after year (and continues to remain unchanged except for the topsheet color)
@yournameiswrong For myself and others: Any idea on which year they added the stiffer tail to the design? For the 10/11 model with the blue graphics or before?
I was under the impression the Pontoons always came with a stiff tail to help compensate for the pintail.
@1veryreal Can't really say for sure as I haven't ridden the Hellbents. Lots of resources to read up on reviews, but Hellbents are twin-tips where as Pontoons aren't. Also, the hellbent continues to evolve while the Pontoon has remained the same ski Shane designed year after year (and continues to remain unchanged except for the topsheet color)
I just bought a pair & have 2 months till the season starts, I was getting a little nervous about the width I plan to use them on aggressive cat ski trips mostly & have never skied on anything that wide but after I watched your vid I have complete confidence that they will be perfect. I am about the same level of skier as you & love skiing BETWEEN trees as well & like that they turn quickly. Thanks for posting, I will be able to sleep again
I think the pontoons are pretty plug and play and are great for a first fat ski. I literally had no adjustment period and this day was my first on skis in 8 months (hence the wobbly arms). I have mine mounted to the line which is what Shane recommended on the TGR thread discussing the Pontoons and they've performed great
Great video. That was deep, man. Never seen anyone buried as much as you were, good job you were not skiing alone. Pontoons rock, you did 'em justice.
I think he loves em but only for the deeper days. He recently picked up Icelantic nomads (also set up rig, like his Prophets) and seems to be spending more days on those.
I tried em that day for some turns: stiffer than the pontoons which has it's advantages when you're tryin' to keep speed in the soft stuff.
They are a plug and play wide-ski. Floats great, turns easy. I'd put the tips on the softer side of things (and I don't ride very stiff skis) but the tails are stiff (though small).
Only time I've had a rough time with them was in heavy heavy wet crud (and it was very annoying). I also don't ski around hard-pack all that much.
The video is my first turns ever on them, after a season riding my touring ski: 188 Armada JP vs. Juliens (not the 5-dim newer JJ).
nice! Been to whistler once and it was over the 07 season. Ive been dying to try those skis out in backcountry. What gets me is when people take these massive skis to resorts when the conditions are hard packed. Went to crested butte earlier this year and people had huge skis all over! I was thinking my lords would be a little to big for the conditions. People were straightlining down the hill because they cant make short turns with these massive skis! doesnt that kinda defeat the purpose?!!!
Best bet for easier trees would be areas that aren't as steep!
Symphony: the slope is gentle and in some areas there are lots of clear paths between trees (usually groomed though) so you can jump in and out of the trees
Emerald: Heading skiers right and going between runs that spit you onto the cat track. The bottom 1/3 (right before the cat-track that brings you back to Emerald chair) is less steep.
You do notice they are heavier when you pick them up but in powder they feel light and turny. In the air, they're heavy though (compared to my 06/07 Armada JJ's)
GoPro just came out with a GoPro HD Hero which (by the looks of it) is amaaaaazing for about 100$ more. (double the framerate, more reosolution... just sweetness)
Thats how we make a trail. good job man

Not sure if I am right but was one of your buds rocking the prophet 130's? If so how does he like them, I am inches away from buying them.

which camera do you use? i need a helmet camera too :-/
whatever nice video

It was a GoPro Helmet Hero wide. Spits out a 512x384 mJPEG video. Great camera, and the HD unit for 100 USD more looks even more amazing.

I am so so envy you guys. Not only the deep powder, but your skiing skills that can handle tight trees like that.
I have never tried trees at Whistler Blackcomb. IS there an easier tree area to start with?
