Biden would be my pick for the reasons David Brooks gave. Biden's only liabilities are his "big mouth" and his "Washington insider" image. The latter cant really hurt you againt McCain, another Washington insider. And the big mouth can be (has been lately) controlled.

Obama can't pick Clinton because that would diminish his authority since he would be picking his rival. Edwards could be good but Edwards sex scandal would really hurt Obama because that would invite more negative ads and it would make some evangelicals less likely to vote for him since moral issues are so important to evangelicals. Obama needs a VP who has strong foreign policy and national security experience.

From an insider it is already a done deal. It is Webb. They will go through a show of picking but the pick is already made. Obama thinks the combination of a Virginian and a black will carry some southern states and he will carry some mountain states on his own. Stealling those red states gives him the election. But it is a done deal Obama/Webb... everything else will just be for show, but Obama has made his choice.

Other self-professed "insiders" have said its between Biden, Baye and Kaine. I can see the advantages to someone like Webb, as a moderate with plenty of military credentials. But he is an asshole.
