To take a screenshot of the whole desktop; cmd + shift + 3 (cmd can also be the apple button on older keyboards, located next to spacebar normally)

To take a selection of the screen; cmd + shift + 4 and just click where you want the left upper corner of your screenshot to be and drag it to the right lower corner where your want your screenshot to end

As for where they are saved, they are saved on the desktop

Sidenote: an external display will have it's own file

But you can take screenshots off of YouTube or other internet videos.
