Are you being serious? The Tempo was a great car? Have you ever owned one?
The Tempo was one of the biggest lemons Ford ever built, second only to the Pinto. It was unreliable as hell, handled like a brick, it was 1000 lbs too heavy for the pathetic engines they put in it, and when it broke down, it was murder to work on.
@jakesaintsrow123 I agree--I had two, an 87 2-door, which was my very first car, and an 84 (diesel), which I got some years LATER and used to commute over 100 miles a day to college. Some guy in a Chevy truck that had let his brake fluid leak out rear-ended me and killed it way before the life was gone out of it. Loved them both!
that is the Montauk lighthouse on Long Island. FYI, the truck driver that sheared the top of the vans got lost another day on the shoot. When he got out of the truck to use a payphone (no cells then), he was hit by a passing car. He survived but spent the rest of the shoot in the hospital. Oh, and another day previously, he got the car carrier hung up on a curb completely blocking a local road for like four hours! It was the jinxed car commercial.
I worked on this commercial just out of college, It took weeks and weeks to make. The Maysles Brothers interviewed hundreds of actual Ford employees. The car footage was all shot in the NY metro area by a german director specializing in car commercials...
The hand wiping the ford logo was that of the art director.
There was a shot in another of this series with a couple of econonline vans. The morning of the shoot, the guy driving the car carrier with the vans, hit an overpass, shearing the tops off.
The ford bronco that you see had an actress riding inside that ended up marrying Bruce Springsteen! How's that for useless trivia?
Ford needs to bring the "Quality is Job 1" slogan back!
But this this video obviously shows it's age. Not with the cars, but in the people: The woman on the computer using PDGS with a light pen, and designers on the drafting boards. That's not how it is now.
My cars, '97 Mercury Sable (awesome) '00 Dodge Neon (very good) '02 Pontiac Grand Am (below par). The Sable had 173,000 on the original transmission and now has 179,000 miles. This car has been excellent. No problems except for the trans! The Neon has been good in 120,000 miles, with a little here and there. The Grand Am has been a GM DISGRACE in almost every regard. While Cadillac was SCREWING the public with the 4100 engine, Lincoln was using Ford's excellent 302 V8. Ford quality!!
Gotta agree with you on Ford Quality. I laugh every time people say that GM and dodge are better, and they own those cars and they are always talking about how their car is in the shop and the only bad thing they have to say about Ford is their transmission. My uncle has had two Ford Taurus's. One 92 and now a 2005. As far as I can recall both cars have only been in the shop to fix the breaks maybe once or twice. Other than that no major problems at all.
If "Quality Is Job One", then why is Mullay asking for part of a $25B loan from the federal government. When the members of the UAW stop getting $72.00 an hour plus benefits for slapping a bumper on a car and/or a truck, I will continue to buy Toyota. Bankruptcy reorganization will put Ford companies more in focus.
24 years is a very, very long time. At the time of this commercial the American auto industry was on top, given that this time period saw the introduction of the legendary Taurus, Caravan/Voyager and Plymouth Reliant. Don't forget about Lee Iacocca!
You do realize that Toyota and the other Japanese companies get HUGE concessions from the Japanese government. In fact, the US is one of the only countries that doesn't give money to the auto makers.
Plus, Ford's quality his higher than any other company according to the latest GPRS scores.
Good lord, is that really a Tempo catching some air at 0:13??? POS car

The only cool cars in this ad are the ford bronco and the mustang. The escourt and t-bird are junk piles.

I love how the 1985 Tempo is in this ad. The people who designed and sold that car belong in jail.

After my Tempo, I was done with Ford for good.

It was a 1985. Hands-down the worst car I have ever owned, and I wasn't alone. Ford put a bullet in it for a reason.

They dumped it because it was a huge lemon - it was damaging the brand.

Ford needs to bring back this ad. It would be better than the lame commercials they have today, plus I think this song is a lot catchier.
