I was sixteen at the time, it was about 9pm & I was fooling around with our short wave band radio listening into 2UE in Sydney, Australia & I heard the for the very first time the Beachboys & they were singing "Surfer Girl" (for some strange reason "Surfer Girl" was released before "Surfin' USA" in NZ). It changed my life forever regarding music. It was an unbelieveable sound.

I played this song when I was in the Vietnam War. We'd buy these great Jap tape decks like Akai and Teac and have all kinds of songs on tape--7 1/2 or 15 fps, studio quality, with huge speakers and 300 watt amps. We'd have to play the volume at 3 1/2 or so--we didn't need to have them go up to "11".

There is a kind of perfection in the Beach Boys -- they were so fresh -- so full of musicality and the harmonies? Unreal. They sang about life and love in a beautiful, yearning and completely epitomizing "fun" and the fantasy of the California Lifestyle -- so glad to listen to the Beach Boys. I do feel sorry for kids that don't get them, and think that trashy, women-hating lyrics that glorify hoodlem street life is something to admire. A couple of notes: For anyone interested, the guitar playing on Surfer Girl may be Glen Campbell; When You Wish Upon a Star and the verses of Surfer Girl share the same rythmic phrasing, but not the same melody or chord changes; Hawthoren is not a part of Los Angeles.
