thats a call i wouldn't like to make. somethin the ump had to make with his ears as well as his eyes. if he validated a double sound it was a foul if it was a single contact sound it was likely a passed ball.
The umpire shoul have noticed the foul ball immediately and signaled, if not, where was his partne on that call and finally, if he didint rule it foul, the first that should have occurred was his mask being taken off to see any possible plays as he shoud never stop umpiring.
This umpire was walking around non-chalantly with his mask on.
As a College and 4A Var high school umpire with a graduation certificate from Wendelstedt umpire school, i can tell you several things wrong here wiith the umpire...
Firstly: The umpire is not in position correctly for a RH batter.
Secondly; The umpire should have clearly "heard", if not "seen" the sound of the ball coming off the bat. A clear foul ball.
Thirdly, the second the catcher ran for the ball, the umpires mask should have come off and head on a swivel. Clearly a fail here.
@syxrzacm First I just want to say I am an umpire, and I respect all umpires. With that said, nobody gives a shit that u have a certificate from wendelstedt. Secondly I have umpired with several umpires who have the same credentials, and I can tell you this, theres a reason you didn't get selected to continue your aspirations. Don't come on here and say you definitely know either way whether it was foul or a passed ball, because you don't. Show respect to ur peers or didn't they teach u that!!
The ball clearly hits off teh bat and deflects into the catcher/ground and goes bouncing away, look at the trajectory of the pitch then look right after he checks his swing, you can see the ball hit the bat if you replay it enough between :04 and :06
Maybe if the umpire wasn't bat blind (even though he can't get hit with the bat) and would leave his eyes open, he would see, and of course hear, the ball hit the ball and bounce straight down onto the catcher's shin guard. Because that would have to have been one hell of a 12-6 curveball.
the ball hit the catchers shin guards.... clearly not the sound of a ball coming off the bat. Thats why the catcher ran after it right away. If the catcher thought it was off the bat, he would have stayed right at home. Then if he would have realized the umpire did not have a foul ball, THEN the catcher would have took off after the ball.
Foul ball because of the double tap noise

it tips the bat slightly making it go downward and hits the catchers shinguard/foot. that's why it went to the left of home plate.

@chuckfan1 I'm pretty sure he saw the runners taking off and he went after the ball. I HIGHLY doubt that the catcher flat out missed the ball.
