maybe not fair to beck since i hear so many influences but this borders on out-right lifting of an entire approach to songwriting...this guys music sure seems like he abandoned experimentalism and went mainstream with the reggea and disco as he got older.
When I first heard this the first time it was broadcast on French TV, when I was a just a kid, I immediately thought of John Barry. There are differences but also great common denominators, especially because of the orchestration ("the insane bass tone" as noted in one of the comments on this page). Also, is it a mere coincidence that Jane Birkin lived with Barry, then Gainsbourg when each musician, respectively, was at the peak of his creativity?
@oglockwood I'm no expert, but I guess a pick and a jazz bass will do the trick. It sounds really heavy on the lows, but with the highs turned way up so that you get that 'plucking' sound.

Gainsbourg came up with pure jewels such as this one, and some other less memorable.
If you want to discover other (living) French musicians who craft awesome orchestrations, you may like Gérard Manset and also Gabriel Yacoub

He somehow makes his lyrics about lust for a young girl into something so romantic and pure. He is a true master of atmosphere and lyricism.

uburei 2 years ago 115
how does the bass player get that sound? or is it just the bass itself that has that tone?
oglockwood 1 year ago
@oglockwood one thing is that players in the 60s and especially the 70s tended to play on the D and G strings.
so it's more mid rangy sound that cuts through
timothypnolan 1 year ago
@oglockwood I'm no expert, but I guess a pick and a jazz bass will do the trick. It sounds really heavy on the lows, but with the highs turned way up so that you get that 'plucking' sound.
