punk is incense right? Music can fall into genres, but not easily defined as such.Calling yourself a label such as 'punk' imho is a bit of an oxymoron ,especially punks who practice anarchy .

Punk music in the day was a type of lifestyle I guess, but I always felt people who play that hand with labeling pigeon hole themselves and feels a bit like a country club after a bit with some folks who feel you have to look or be a certain type to really be a fan and BE that genre.

punk didnt start with a date or band, its been around since the dawn of time! elvis whas the punk of his time, its just a name, it started at the dawn of time, not in the bands!

MC5 had the 'anarcho' attitude in the 60's, they were political radicals. were anti racist and anti capitalist, were squatters when starting and so on.

They were cool for the 60's, they slagged off the rest of the hippie bands for selling out to 'the man' etc. Check out their history, its quite interesting.

Some say it started in the mid 60's with the garage band sound, some the 50's with the D.I.Y independent labels and attitude towards simple rocking tunes like Sun rcds had. Early punk bands wanted to 'get back to basics' like the "old time pop" (Johnny Ramone) of the 50's and 60's.

As a punk fan of 30 years I don't think it matters though (what an old fart! lol)

I know I wrote that only 3 months ago but I've educated myself quite a bit since then, I'm just now getting heavy into punk so im still learning about what it means to be "punk" but right now I think punk is when someone says "this is bullshit" and does their own thing. So in ways I think nirvana could be called punk. You got it right so far. Punk is a long and great journey, it just gets a bit awkward when you get old and balding lol.

Nirvana were punk in the same way the Stooges were, or Robert Johnson was (20's/30'sblues singer -check him out for raw music, like a primitive Patrick Fitzgerald), or the Vibrators.

Punk didn't start with a particular band. Not with the Ramones, not with the Sex Pistols, not with any band. Bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols made it well-known. It's just derived from youth cultures such as Rockers, Skinhead and Mods..
