I wonder if anyone has the complete video which the "pig" segment is from that would be absolutely incredible I'm quite sure this is the only live version I have heard with Robert Wyatt singing the lyrics absolutely amazing!!!!
Another rarity within this comp; Robert Wyatt singing the lyrics to "Pig", unheard outside the album version, when the whole suite was revamped as "Esther's Nose Job". Even on 1969's "Live at the Paradiso", this element had been discarded. As to Robert's fuller physique in Matching Mole, having been recently ousted from the band he founded, he was likely drinking heavily at this point, ultimately resulting in the infamous plunge he took from a third story balcony which left him paralyzed.
@steevenfrost true, although 'cuckoo land' broke so much new ground -- a deviation from the drone approach -- while comicopera just kind of plods (albeit wonderfully) as usual.
Actually "God Song" belongs to Matching Mole 2nd album "Little Red Record"... and by that time, Dave Sinclair had been definitely replaced by Dave MacRae on the keyboards!... ;-)
Wyatt's vocal and drumming along with Kevin Ayers' bass work really made the Soft Machine so unique and exciting, I really loved their first album!!! I didn't have any idea they were both such good looking babes back then.
Although, I've always considered Robert to be one of the pioneers of the "grunge" look, I must admit, he looks really gorgeous and cute, here at : 00:29-00:31!...
The name of the song is "God Song" (by Matching Mole). Great video siroen, thank you very much. on which website did you found it? and where indeed is the complete material?
Robert Wyatt actually singing "Pig" live with the Soft Machine is a true rarity, warts and all. The rest is pretty cool too, particularly the Hatfield and the North sit-ins.
i am sorry the footage in wich RW sings PIGS with the Softies as a trio was a playback broadcasted in november 1969 on french TV for the evening news. despite this, it was a big shock for me. but the jam at the end with Hatfield and the north was performed live for french TV; one of the shot with Soft Robert walking.
A playback? You mean they lip-synced? Nope, it sounds very raw compared to the studio version, and even if one may argue that Wyatt may have pre-recorded his vocal, I still think he would have done a better job. It's obvious he struggles to drum and sing simultaneously. Ergo, I definitely think this is live.
What was that first few seconds?

Probably a "booze factor", learnt from Mitch Mitchell on the '68 Hendrix tours.

The second song is "A Certain Kind" (quickly followed by the very different "Pig").
This is available on the first Soft Machine album - "The Soft Machine" - which I refuse, on purist grounds, to call Volume One!

That second to last tune is with Richard Sinclair - Hatfield and the North?

God Song, from the 1st Matching Mole LP, which has Sinclair on it.

It's on Little Red Record, the 2nd MM album. Richard S still performs it as an encore when HATN play live.

Siroen, your video archive of 'Soft Machine' is great!
I love today's Robert Wyatt too. His vocaling 'after' Soft Machine is super, full of sadness and gentleness.
Thanks anyway for your uploading.
