@CherubiamCloud that wasnt so much what i meant, the little technique that he does, where he kind of slaps the fretboard twice, i cant figure out how to do that one little thing
@MrSister127 its a slap harmonic. its a more percussive form of a harp harmonic.
/watch?v=hilw10JvaZU
this will show you what a harp harmonic is.
the only difference is he uses his middle finger on his picking hand to slap the strings on the 12th fret, creating a harmonic chord that comes from the notes he was holding down with his fretting hand.
@MrSister127 Those are called "tap harmonics". Tap harmonic is a technique used with fretted string instruments, (usually guitar). It is executed by tapping on the actual fret wire most commonly at the 12th fret, but also can be executed by tapping any of the fret wires with proper technique. It can also be done by gently touching the string over the fret wire instead of tapping the fret wire if the string is already ringing.
@azahnd82 It's not tapping the fret wire which produces the note. Its effectively the same as a percussive snare hit, but on any harmonic fret and with the middle or index finger (for example, the 12th fret) so the harmonics ring out. So yeah, the sound is created by the finger hitting the STRING/S onto the fret wire which causes the harmonics to resonate, not just hitting the fret wire, that would not create any kind of harmonic, just a thud :P
@azahnd82 Like what Tom Dodson said, harmonics are created when you place a node at a particular perfect fraction of the string length, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4.. When you place your finger over the 12th fret(signifying halfway for string length), you create a node if you touch the string and strike it. the string vibrates like a jump rope on both sides making the harmonic sound. when you tap the fretwire that is the same as very quickly striking the string and having your finger act as a node.
@NEXutTORUSramenMETAL Now maybe I miss the pun and all, and I would never be the one to bring politics into a youtube post, but it isn't the republicans spending the money that no longer exists, even in 12 trillions worth of debt. Just saying I can't vouch for a group that is all about spending when I no longer have a future and know my kids won't unless I work myself into an early grave.
i'm an amateur player at best. sometimes i get a riff and feel really good about my playing. then i see videos like this and immediately lose all self confidence. well done sir, this is a symphony
@mstevens182 you shouldnt lose self confidence in your playing because of artists like craig you should be inspired to improve your playing :) you never know sometimes we are better than we realise just takes an outside opinion to show us that

Craig, awesome song man..question..how do u formulate your tunings??..I'm a seasoned player but new to this style and would love to get some pointers if u don't mind!
@spelunker54321 I make songs like these. I'm putting together a few solo pieces and am going to upload them soon. Something I find helps to keep these in mind: 1. Can I carry a melody on the top four strings? 2. Can I play a bassline that goes with the melody on the bottom two? 3. When I use slap harmonics, does it sound good? Knowing this, base the key of your song off the harmonics. Hope this was helpful.
@spelunker54321 Look up info on Open tunings for guitar. Its where you tune your guitar to a chord, so that when you strum the guitar without pressing any frets, itll be a chord.
@spelunker54321 Im not craig, nor will I ever be at his talent level but I play very similar style, and make a lot of my own tunings and songs. Just grab a tuner and start messin around until you find something that sounds good. Trial and error. I love alternate tunings! Great song btw.
@spelunker54321 i forget exactly how it helps at the moment, but take a look at something called the circle of fifths and key signatures. it is technically music theory, but its not too difficult to learn and itll help so much if you apply it correctly.
@spelunker54321 A lot of the tunings these guys play are open chord tunings. Easy example is open G tuning like how Keith Richards played a lot of his stuff. I have made a lot in open C tuning and and I'm almost sure that is the tuning this is in. Another popular tuning is open Dsus2. Hope this helps!
@spelunker54321 It took me a while to find out the secret myself, and what i've come up with is that you find yourself a chord that you like and tune to it. The only thing you'll want to do is have your 1st or 6th string tuned to the root of the chord. Or even both! Personally I like to have my 1st, 4th, and 6th string tuned to the root because it makes your options a lot more open and a lot simpler.
@TriviumFan15 & @spelunker54321.. completely concur with Triv on that one... you find a chord that just sounds sweet, and tune to it. That technique has been extended to the use of tuning machines. I understand McKee is a fan of the machine method. Also concur with Triv - i especially love having the 6th tuned to the root. Great to discuss this with you guys. Fun pickin :)
@spelunker54321 i find that working with harmonics is a good start. the first time i tried an abstract tuning was 2 years ago and it was CGCGCG, it made an AMAZING sound. took me a while just to get simple bar chords to work as you cannot use stardard.
think outside the box or just try some open chord tunings.

just saw him in minneapolis. if the tour is coming near you, go to it. it was definitely worth the 8 hours driving for me.
that's round trip mind you, gas is too expensive to go 8 one way.

His guitar sounds so rich. Love it.

The moving second camera pisses me off, doesn't fit the calamity of the song. Totally destroys the nice athmosphere.
