  • There seems to be an awful lot of debate in the comments regarding the saucer separation witnessed by the Constitution Class starship. The vessel was in fact designed to separate saucer. In the event of a catastrophic event, the entirety of the crew could be evacuated to the saucer section, and all hatches sealed. At this point a series of pre-installed explosive charges would detonate causing a one time only separation of saucer and hull.

  • very true....consitution class starships didnt have the ability to have saucer separation....that came later on. Otherwise,a good video for its time and available computer technology. TY for posting it.

  • @DraconusMajorus Thanks for your comments. Depends what Trekker you ask as well. I asked a Trek mate of mine who said some books say it can. Or perhaps I can say this was a prototype testing saucer sep for the first time :-) But it was fun making it and coming up with the ramming idea - a typical Trek thing.

  • Nice to see someone not relying on CGI. Good work, hope to see more of your stuff.

  • CHEESEY but in a good way

  • lol....so bad ,,, but so good

  • not bad at all for an old fan made movie/show. look liked you had fun makeing it, and thats all that matters. keep it up.

will be doing my own soon with my kids, but not startrek, just space-ish stuff.

  • @1crazyfocker I wish you well with yours. Me and my kids made a Thunderbirds movie called Thunderkids - it's here on YT. Lots of fun, and I hope we caught the essence of that show too.

  • Beware the Great Space Guppy!!

  • It's pretty good for a fan film. The people criticizing it are comparing it to TV shows and movies with far larger budgets.

  • @fjccommish Thank you, plus it was made in 1998 when computer editing systems and effects were just in their infancy for home systems. I thought it would be interesting for people to see what we managed with our limited resources back then.

  • @Calvertfilm hmm by modern day standard it isn't very good but by the time it was made pretty well done although the consitiution couldn't split the saucer

  • @si2foo Opinion seems divided on saucer sep depending what books you read. I'm not a Treker but I asked my mate who is, and he approved the idea. Goodness knows where he got his info from but from a book somewhere.

  • @Calvertfilm you can make it however you decided there has been books for everything

  • Bad acting. Even worse effects! Worse that the original show. Nice attack run though. But really bad video.

  • Not too bad for a fan made movie, the effects were very good giving the time it was made, as for the acting well fan made movie says it all.

Wouldn't mind seeing this re done with the up to date computer programs.

  • @RLhole68 Fair comment. We were just having fun, and I'm glad you noticed how old it was. The early days of computer editing.

  • Horrible! Just plain bad! You might have had fun making it but the outcome was just aweful!

  • @soxster101 Well at least your honest, even if you can't spell.

  • Nice editing and nice acting PLEASE DO MORE IF POSSIBLE =DDDDDDD

  • Strange classic look but i like them.

  • Great stuff---really enjoyed how you kept the original series "flavor".... make some more this is enjoyable. To tell the truth, I just can't get enough of the original series. TNG and the movies and ST '09 were great but for my own part you can't beat the original. Thanks!

  • @henry7261 Cheers for that - I prefer the original series too. We tried to capture it in our own small way.

  • @Calvertfilm You did a great job of capturing the original series in this short film. Any chance on remaking it now with the new programs you can use ?

  • @mmichaelc Possibly one day but my next movie is a zombie short film. It's nice to try different things.

  • NEAT SHIT!! Love it!!!

  • I can't see why ppl would even try to compare this work with a real production crew. Geez, this is better than I expected and am glad I watched it. It is real effort and should be valued as it is...and not what it should be. I see no reason for criticism for this work and the effort this cast and crew made. Kudo's Laurie Calvert for trying and making your episode! It's what it is, and it was an interesting story. So few episodes have fleet battles, thank you for thinking of it!

  • @capie44 Thanks for that. We did indeed want a fleet battle of some sort, and in the late nineties these were the FX we could achieve at that time. As you say, a fan based effort. Made with a normal home PC and zero budget. Also I wanted to catch the mood and flavour of classic Trek. Hope fully we did that too, and pay homage, in our own small way, to a great show.

  • I saw some Galatica FX there :) I think.

  • @all13Doctors Almost. I couldn't do explosion CGI FX att he time (can now), so I used footage from other shows. I think it was Next Gen and perhaps even Starship Troopers.

  • @Calvertfilm I see. I thought it was the scene where Atlantia blows up plus a few Viper scenes. (I of course, refer to the original) :D

  • @67irishfire Almost.

  • The critics may have some valid points; but, this was still fun and the audio track made it seem almost authentic.

  • @sshepard94 Agreed.

  • This was about as corny as Corn Chex. Add some milk to it and it get soggy!! This is what it is - very very soggy and washed up!

  • @scoobydoo11111 LOL.

  • @jediboyuk We just did it for a bit of fun, and the effort was in the FX. The rest was just a reason to carry the FX. There wasn't much acting in this one. For another Trek film we made we did cast local actors, and that was more story based. At the end of the day it was made for fun, and we are happy with it. Poor acting never stopped Dr Who LOL.

  • Seriously....was she naked at the end?

  • I bet you will block me if I say..Space 1999 is better.

  • @Fooblestheclown I think it is too!

  • Very good. Effects better than what they used in the 60's.

  • Great animation!

  • I wish you had left ratings on, I would give this five stars just for your effort. :)

  • I'll put them on. I used not to, but these days I generally do.

  • I enjoyed this - it was a great deal of fun and bet you guys had fun making it. Look forward to more. I tip my hat to thee!

  • Nice work. Ignore the bad critics. Its all about having fun and enjoying Trek.

  • 'All about having fun and enjoying Trek' - nicely put. Thanks.

  • Firstly, the acting was terrible! It was worse than William Shatner's singing career!!! Secondly the Constitution -class, including refit did not have Saucer-seperation capabilities, it was only the Galaxy class. Do your homework!

  • Thanks out putting your comments in a kind and constructive way. I admire that.

This is just a fun movie made by fans, so why are you expecting top acting? We did do our homework and some Trekkers said that some books do indeed state that saucer-sep is possible in this class, so we did it.

p.s. I don't agree with your comment about Shatners' singing career. The only thing worse than that is your sense of constructive feedback.

Learn a lesson people how to write here. Be courteous

  • Constitution and Enterprise classes had the ability to separate. It was intended as an emergency escape maneuver in the event of a warp core failure. Unlike later ships, they could not eject the core. They also could not reconnect without the use of a drydock.

  • Actually the constitution class did have saucer separation, but they never did it in the original series because it was too hard to do at the time, that is why they only mentioned it. It was mentioned by writers on the next generation that they could finally do it now that special effects had got better. I read it also in an official paramount writers guide to star trek. Kirk even mentioned it in one episode.

  • actually it did have saucer-sep in the episode with val kirktells Scotty to sep if that whatit takes to save the ship

  • Yeah, I seem to remember him mentioning it but we never saw it right?

  • actually, the constitution class COULD seperate, but the saucer wouldn't be able to re-join with the stardrive section...it seperates with explosive charges, only to be used as a last-ditch effort, like escaping a warp-core breach..(look it up on Memory Alpha, "Saucer seperation")

  • @greyfur1

Saucer seporation was mentioned in one of the TOS episodes. It was an emergency proceedure and Kirk was going to go through with it.

It wasn't until TNG that SS was seen on TV.

Also, the original ships couldn't re-attach unless in spacedock.

The Franz Joseph Enterprise blueprints of 1975 also showed where the SS blast bolts were located on the neck.

I'll try and find the episode of TOS where Kirk says it, if you want.

  • I do remember hearing Kirk mention it on a show now you say.

  • @Calvertfilm - I did you're homework for you! Episode #38 - "The Apple - original airdate: October 13, 1967.

Just a hint on the acting : try to be more "Dynamic" like Shatner was. - To do this, try drinking more coffee! LOL!

  • Ah, coffee was it...?

  • Or whiskey :)

  • @madcapromanian - The episode is called "The Apple" and was #38 in the 2nd season. (had to look it up in my video collection.)

  • Actors might be too strong a word ;-)

    (I was one of them).

  • That was really good.

  • that was really good please do another i like the tos era

  • LOL! Classic Battlestar Galactica explosion at 0:58! Great job!

  • are you going to make any maore of these fan film?

  • Probably not a Trek one. But you never know. I still have the uniforms. I make movies all the time, and just finished my 220th film yesterday, and that one was about Robot Wars.

  • cool, so do you still have the music? I'm making my own star trek fan film and it could realy help if you would tell me were to get the songs

  • The CD was called 'Star Trek Original Television soundtrack Volume two'. From the episodes 'The Doomsday Machine' and 'Amok Time'. It was a US import CD number - GNPD 8025 Crescendo Records. I suggest you search for it on the net and see if you can get it still. Try eBay too.

  • you should make another!!!

  • We did make one other around the time called 'The Brave and the Valiant'. I have uploaded some clips here on YouTube. More actors, less action. There are some outtakes too. Enjoy.

  • great job lads, great video for the late 90's. you have the classic star trek original series ending with the smart comment

  • Thanks. I 'lifted' the end comment from 'The Doomsday Machine' episode.

  • It looks great on TV, just came across dark here as you say.

  • Well done! A good story, and good effects (for its day). One criticism I would make would be the acting, maybe it could have been done a bit better. But apart from that, it was really good! Congratulations!

  • Cheers. Yes it was made a few years ago now (late nineties), when I was getting used to computer technology in film making. We thought we'd try to make the acting like Shatners but we overdid it! No, actually we just aren't actors really ;-)

  • Oh! Then, for people who weren't actors, you did very well. Keep up the good work!

  • lol the explosion sounds are from a game called ROBLOX

  • Well you know more than me! I just downloaded them off the internet.

  • Very nice. Lots of fun.

  • Very nice, very faithful to the look and style of the original series!

  • ;-)

  • Violence violence violence thats not the Star Trek phylosophie!!

  • Ever seen The Doomsday Machine?

  • very nicely done, the saucer sep was a nice touch. i thought it was very classic trek. i wouldnt be a fan without a gripe tho right? lol the intrepid looked like she took a BEATING, hours worth of fighting....yet one shot took out that fleet ship?

  • Fair comment. Perhaps the circumstances were different? But I never explain. If you look at the Constellation and Enterprise fighting the Doomsday Machine both came out of the fight looking different. That's my only defence.

  • Why is it that people always think ramming a chunk of metal into something (crashing a ship) is more effective than phasers which are supposed to be stronger than nukes!! AAAAAARRRRGG PHYSICS!!

  • true ^^

  • It's just a film. This is more dramatic.

I suppose you could say that it could resist phasers, as we saw, so a material object was different, and proved effective, if I really had to answer it.

But really it's done for dramatic effect.

  • I guess there are more dramatic things than 'I kill for pleasure'.

That isn't really Star Trek :/

  • It is very Trek - for example in 'The Gamesters of Triskelion' Kirk and other are forced to fight, sometimes to the death, for the amusement on the Providers. Same sort of thing - killing for pleasure.

Plus bear in mind this is not a 45 min epsiode, so the story has to flow differently - I needed a quick reason to explain the attacks.

    Thank you for your comments.

  • Detonation of the warp core would cause...OH GOD!, I've become a nerd!

  • very cool!

  • In 'The Apple' Kirk says:

"Then use your imagination. Tie every ounce of power the ship has into the impulse engines. Discard the warp drive nacelles if you have to, and crack out of there with the main section, but get that ship out of there!"

I think that is about the limit of "saucer separation" in the original show.

  • Yes, you are right. I saw 'The Apple' the other day. He does indeed say that to Scott as the ship is gradually being pulled down to the planet over a series of hours.

  • rly? i do remember that episode in the original series myself when i saw that strange creature they called Vol.

  • That wasn't bad at all. I was wanting to see a TOS saucer separation. It was a last resort move.

  • What??? The constitution class star ship doesn't separate.

  • We've never seen it do it but apparently in some books (so my Trekkie friends assured me) it can. So I was going by them.

  • In some unoffical works, yes, it has been stated that the Connie's saucer can, in fact, separate... The ship doesn't become two fully operational starships like the Galaxy's saucer and stardrive do though... Rather, as we see in this clip, the saucer is meant to be used as something akin to a lifeboat and hopefully escape whatever fate subsequently befalls the stardrive section...

As far as I know, this concept doesn't actually clash with the canon...

  • Actually Kirk orders Scotty to jettison the nacelles and begin emergency saucer separation.. though as I recall he never gets to finish the order.

  • It does but was never used.

  • The explosion effects are from Star Trek VI and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

  • You know I can't remember but you may be correct. Nowadays I can make my own CG explosions using Particle Illusion software. But this was made in about 1998.

  • Very good for fan work!

  • The Bridge set was just a capture from a scene from the series using Adobe Premiere (I could have used a still picture). Using Photoshop I then cloned away people. I also added damage. I shot the actors against a blue sheet and blue screened them over this picture. These days I could do it a bit better.

  • This is terrific. If I remember correctly, the episode you based this on actually used some of the AMT/Ertl model kits -which by then were on the market- for the Intrepid and the other starships.

  • You could be right. You probably know more than me. The models I used for this production were indeed the type you state. It was heartbreaking to burn cuts into the Intrepid model, even though it was an old one. But it looks good on film.

  • Well Done!!! This proves models are still realistic even to this day!

BTW, did you build the bridge set yourself? If so, how much did it cost? I'm thinking about making a fan movie myself, and I'm wondering how to do low-cost starship interiors. Thanks!

  • great effort, deep down we are all trek lovers
