I know - I consider myself very lucky indeed. The cha I bo8ight them off is a guitarist, wanted to “have a dabble” at the drums. He said he had an HD1 kit upstairs, for when the mood takes him. But he paid £1880 (including a bass pedal, stand and hi-hat stand) about 6 months ago. It had only been for sale a few hours when he responded positively to a buy it now request. He suggested £950 for cash. Great. Now all I have to do is learn how to play them - groan
@mikeu117gh The kit itself is supplied without a hi-hat stand or bass pedal, you are expected to supply them yourself. If you do order it from somewhere, you will need to buy the pedal and stand as well if you dont already have your own. Any standard kick pedals or hi-hat stands will do, it's not any specific Roland ones. You'll get suitable ones from any decent music shop or drum store.
@mbd691 It appears to be a very popular model, and I can see why. I have since added a second crash cymbal, and am thinking of buying new kits from the V-Expressions website. They do reworked settings that you can upload for 10 or 20 bucks that give you lots of new kits.
@mbd691 Actually I bought a CY-8 instead. The CY-8 is only £50, and the full arm assembly to mount it is the same, so the whole thing is less than just the CY-12C itself. Not as nice looking, but works great. Cant post links in comments, but search for the vdrums forums. Its an excellent resource for info and tips, and there's a VEX section where you get links to the V-Expressions people. Folk swear by them, so I might try a set out and see.
Great review. Been looking at possibly buying this but had lots of questions and you answered them all, especially concerning durability. Thanks again
@shandynantz You might want to Google the vdrums forum, it's one of the biggest meeting places for people using electronic kits of all kinds. Its mainly Roland since they are about the biggest, but there's info on a lot of kits and you can ask any questions there. Lots of very knowledgable people hang out there, and you can also get custom kit downloads as well.
@axeman3d yes man. I use MIDI USB cable and and it works just fine. EXCEPT the VH-11 Hi-Hat. WHich EZDRUMMER did not detect when it close. SO it end up sound the same (Open/Close). Google it and found that most of EZDRUMMER+VH-11 user have the same issue. :(
@iman211 I've heard a lot of people saying they use Superior Drummer 2.0 with this kit, do you know if that works? I wonder if the problem is the way the Roland handles the midi or the way EZDrummer handles the data. I might give this a try sometime soon, but I dont know if I'd trust that sort of setup when playing live somewhere. OK for recording though.
Thanks for the reply! Due to your decent review (and the only one I could find which wasn't from Roland) I've decided to get the TD9-KX2. Thanks man, great accent too!
@missdouchebag100 Yeah but It's easy to add more, I did it with my last couple of kits. The TD9 has 2 spare inputs for cymbals or drums, so I'll add a crash soon. Cymbal pads start about £50, but with the mounting arm it comes closer to £100. Luckily the kit comes with a spare short arm & mount, so just the cymbal to buy. There are about 10 different Roland cymbals, or I could fit pretty much any other cymbal pad from Yamaha, Alesis, Hart or whoever.
I agree with you, many years ago I had a roland kit and it was top notch. Then later on I tried some yamahas , alesis, and ended up selling them because they felt cheap. Now im planning on buying this kit because im moving to an apartment where there's no neighbords below nor around :D
@mcufre The occasional commenter has said the Yamaha's are better now, but I'll never know because no one in my area stocks or sells them. There are several Roland dealers nearby where I can try any Roland kit, and there are several Alesis and cheapo no-name kits in local music shops, but no Yamahas.
@axeman3d Of course they have high end kits too and I've seen some examples of them in youtube, they didnt seem to me to be on the same level as the rolands though. I recommend you trigger some Superior samples with your td9 too, that's what im planning to do when i get them.
@mcufre I bought my kit at a demo given by Craig Blundell, and he uses lots of separate triggers and samples as part of his performance. Its beyond the scope of what I do, which is mainly covers or jamming in certain styles. For fun last night I stuck on an 80's Hits CD, selected 80's Rock kit and it matched perfectly 90% of the tracks. The big reverby Ballad and Stadium Rock kits did the rest. Great fun, and a great covers tool.
@axeman3d Look for superior 2.0 videos on youtube, the sound they trigger are much more realistic than even the most expensive roland modules. Check it out.
Great video! You've managed to answer all the questions I had about this kit (something that neither Roland, nor their re-sellers have managed), so kudos to you and I'm off to buy this this weekend (finally)!
@mrkukful You'll have to let us know how you get on with it. I am amazed by how versatile it is, but I know electronic kits aren't to everyones taste.
I've had a roland td-3 for a while and thought it was time to upgrade, so i checked out the roland kit here, and the yamaha dtx 700, i gotta say yamaha are really winning this race now in my opinion. The silicone heads fell so much better and more realistic than the bouncy roland mesh heads, and the kits sound so much better from the yamaha. Roland have a better reputation than they deserve in my opinion. They are great dont get me wrong, but yamaha feel and sound much better at the moment.
Thanks for the review! I have been looking to get an electronic set to play in my apartment without angering the neighbors. I have some playing time on an older Roland kit and it was decent... this one looks like it is a really good package for the price.
@imsofreestyle The mesh heads are way quieter than the rubber pads that I used to have on my TD3. The only thing my neighbour notices is me stamping too hard on the bass pedal when I get carried away. The drum makes no sound, but the pedal thumps the floor a bit so i dont play late at night. The cymbals are hard plastic/rubber and make a little noise, but nothing to annoy neighbours.
@nyanks15 You can also use a basic socket doubler to plug two cymbals or pads into one socket. They would sound the same, but thats no worse than buying two identical metal cymbals. They'd look good and give you an additional cymbal either side of the kit, and no one would really notice during a gig anyway. :-)
@nyanks15 Watch from 10:54 onwards and see the sockets. 2 sockets, one aux for any type and one cymbal. It doesn't matter, you can change the instruments to anything so you could have 2 toms, 2 cymbals or 1 of each.
@nyanks15 It will play MP3's and WAV's via the USB socket, you plug it in and select it from the built-in song menu. It has 50 tunes of it's own, 51 and up are what it finds on the USB. You can also pipe music in from your iPod or similar using the audio in socket, the little jack socket you see in the video. You can plug in any pad or cymbal you like, it has 2 spare 1/4" jack sockets for them.
I spent the extra because I'd already owned the base model TD3, and because i wanted mesh heads and not rubber. The mesh pad version of the TD4 brought the price into the same range as the TD9, and I talked myself into it from there. Mesh pads are WAY better than rubber. They are quieter when practicing, more realistic feeling and look miles better at gigs. The TD4 sounds great, but the TD9 is lots more of everything.
@axeman3d thanks for the info, how do you find playing on the mesh heads? i have heard reports they are very bouncy like a tennis racket making it difficult to transfer playing onto an acoustic kit? the new yamaha dtx series have the new textured cellular silicone heads which are supposed to be much closer to playing an acoustic kit..
@shredder900 I haven't tried the new Yamaha's yet, the only place that stocked them near me stopped doing them a while ago as they didn't sell well. Now it's Roland, Alesis or crap USB stuff. The mesh heads are just skins made by Remo. Playing on rubber was noisy and dead, these are much better. They're springy, yes, but not overly and you can adjust with a drum key to suit yourself. I think it's because they're smaller than acoustics, not more elastic.
you mentioned you've tried the TD4, would you recommend spending the extra on this? i've been playing for 4 years, got a dtxplorer at the moment and looking to upgrade. any advice appreciated. thanks.
Saw your comment on my review and popped over to find that you also have a review. Nice review by the way. Pretty well covers all bases.

Can I plug Ddrum Triggers (used with acoustic drums) into the Roland TD9 sound module or can I only connect electronic pads?
