This is actually a great metaphore for fans who think the show is too complicated or nons-sensical "Just go and get yourself an ice cream and stop worrying so much"
I thought this was very touching...the Tardis enabled Amy to remember something from her past, altered course and took her there as a result...then closed the doors she and the Doctor walked out to the fairground..what a lovely ship :-)
but . . . interacting with yourself or established events will mess time up and bring forth the Reapers to "clean the wound" like they did with Rose's dad in Series 1. Goddamnit Moffat . . .
Saddest ever memory? Amy? Seriously? Not when your husband died right in front of out your eyes? Not when your parents abandoned you? I mean really Amy? I know you like to hide your emotions but, seriously?
I'm going to miss them so much when they're gone! Their chemistry as Amy and the Doctor, and as themselves (from what I've seen on confidential and con vids and the like) is so brilliant!
I love Rory so much. And the line about him; "Ah! But sometimes you catch him just staring..." gives him so much weight to his character, that they rarely give to him.
What is the Doctor trying to say to Amy at 1:30 - 2:50?? I can't quite understand the meaning behind that conversation, i just can't put my finger on it..... anyone wanna help me out??
To the people who are asking about the paradox, in this case it is not. It is only a paradox if she touches her former self (watch series one with Christopher Eccleston "Father's Day") so assuming she does not touch herself when giving herself the ice cream, she should be okay. Also, yes it is dangerous to back into one's time stream, but if the Doctor says it is okay, then it is probably okay. He been around for a few hundred years, I think he knows what his is doing when it comes to time s
Funny thing is, I had a dream last night that revolved entirely around two things. Matt Smith and ice cream.
Matt and David were in an ice cream shop with a bowl full of baby carrots, and a lady with a little dog, and then something happened and it changed to what was almost the scene in Blackpool with Peter and Natalie walking along after their first date, only with Matt instead of Natalie. And then David said "Can I hold your hand?"
This video makes me smile. And then I find that I have no idea what happened and that I only know what Matt said and wasn't paying any attention to Amy.
@KriegMarshal94 The Doctor can actually do some fancy stuff with the sonic screwdriver so that it doesn't cause a rip in the universe if you meet your self.
Amy: We are such tiny parts of your life, aren't we? All the friends you meet just flicker in and out. You must hardly notice us.
Doctor: Amy, you are enormous parts of my life, and you are all I ever remember.
Such a touching moment. The Doctor's companions are what really gives his life meaning and gives him the strength to keep going despite all the hardship he's been through. There's a good reason why he went to visit every single one of them before he regenerated into Eleven.
she has seen her husband die about 9 times , had her daughter kidnapped , lost her parents as a child , watched her daughter kill her best friend and been abandoned by her hero as a child (in no particular order) ... and her saddest memory is dropping an ice-cream ??? really Amy ? really ?
@rnj117 Well Amy was surprised herself that ice cream was her saddest memory, and just about all of those things you listed ended up working out. Plus, as the Doctor said "remembering ice cream is always sad."
@rnj117 thank you! I just can't help thinking this. I understand how that *could* be a really sad memory, even amidst a lot of trauma, because...of...reasons...but COME ON! Amy Pond, you have one of the most depressing, screwed up lives ever, and your husband dying or losing your daughter get trumped by whatever it was that made an ice cream cone so depressing?
@rnj117 When you're about four, dropping an ice-cream *does* feel like the end of the world. Small children can be utterly, perfectly miserable for a short space of time and then move on. It's an ability that we tend to forget as we get older.
When I first watched this, I misheard Amy and thought she said "periods," instead of "parents," and was astounded that the TARDIS can affect menstrual cycles.
@RinaLam93 I'm not entirely sure about how it works in Doctor Who, but I don't think it would make any difference if you met your past self. The way this explains deja vu kind of erases the possibility of it causing that rip. Basically it just makes it so that it happened and you remember it. Now >.> if you do something to yourself, an injury perhaps, /that/ might disturb things a bit.
"Do you get scared on ghost trains? I get a bit scared, so do you mind if I hold your hand?"
I love that in order to make her feel better he takes her to the fair. & I love that he goes to the fair in his tux. & I love that they go off to the fair in the middle of the night & leave Rory asleep :)
It's not really a paradox if she meets herself, it would be a paradox if she figured out it was her who gave the ice cream when she was older but never did it, because then no one would be around to give the ice cream-meaning a pardox. This isn't. And besides, The Doctor met his old self(the Big Bang) River met her old self(Last Night) & Many more times. :) @louiseyxD
@TheDanni0608 Isn't this more some sort of 'fixed point in time timeloop'? She's young when she dropped the ice-cream, elder woman buys one for her. Young Amy becomes the one we know on the Tardis (which, because of this particulier event has to happen) and figures out she was the one who gave it to her, so she goes and buys an ice-cream for her younger self, and thus we are back at the beginning. Or maybe it's just wibbley-jiggery-spacey xD
