On average, a full medieval armour suit (this one is not full, it only has plate; no mail and padding under it) weighed in at just over 80 pounds, no chainmail, 50 - 60 pounds, chainmail only 40 pounds (I know the math doesn't add up, but without plate more chainmail was worn)
A full chainmail hauberk and leggings limits movement and speed by on average 37%, full articulated plate from the 1400's limited armour by only 17% if chainmail was not worn under it. Japanese samurai armour limited movement and speed by around a mere 1 or 2 alll the way 8% depending on the model (they greatly varied)
@Zadamanim It hurts more if you are hit by a practice weapon, but it hurts drastically less if you're getting hit with a real light mace (heavy would pierce the helmet), sharpened sword, or halberd. Additionally, very many modern commercial helmets have little padding, in medieval times there was some padding, but most of the blow was cushioned by the leather head covering worn under the helmet that even the most low ranking soldiers were issued (in fact for some, that's all they were issued)
that guy that called snipers wimps is stupid you should respect all warriors id would like for people to be able to use swords and for a warrior class to still exist but guns are just a more advanced weapon weapons are always getting more deadly its not cowardice
@l3054 not cowardice but it removes the skill element a few hours training and most people can begin to get quite accurate with a firearm. Try getting remotly useful with any medieval weapon in that space of time it aint going to happen.
@kreeperrock any weapon takes real skill to use in actual combat instead of different technuiqes and counterattacks you need to be able to understand how and where to take cover unit cohesion and how to shoot targets from 10 feet to 300 yards away while getting shot at is pretty hard and whether you were a knight or even samurai in medieval period or are a soldier today you have to understand military tactics and strategy
@Warlord795 Actually I believe he's also invulnerable in a lightning storm, 'cause I'm almost sure his armor works just like a Faraday cage in this case. But some expert physician please correct me if I'm wrong :D
@BudBuffalo Yep ur right ! :D Electricity ''runs'' only on the surface of the metal , so u inside are pretty safe :)) till all the electicity goes in the earth cose it wont go throu u at all.
Chainmail can be much more reliable in many circumstances. It is a little lighter, easier to move around in still offers moderate protection if you atleast have a shield as well.
@fartsam08 Chainmail, you have a lesser movement ratio, just matters how you armor yourself andwhat armor you buy and how much strength and energy you have.
I miss the good days when you fought your enemy face to face and you saw their guts falling out, arms falling off, your friends decapitated head smash into your helmet, and the feel of your enemies blood on your face. I was born in the wrong time.
@eizehore Sorry to tell you this, but the knights that did acrobatics in armor were made up by this little place called Hollywood. A full set of medival armor weighed enough to crush you if piled on your chest. They wore it for protection, not show.
I like your armour.. is it a kind of german gothic armour? I can see a kattle hat and a high bevor; the rest of the armour suggests me the german one.
@Bidmartinlo Ummm there are many manuscripts that show legit protection on their groin... I do not know why many armors today make them with no to little protection...
Not that I don't like full plate (I REALLY do.) But I'd prefer a lighter, more flexible, AND stronger modern suit of full body armor (Yes, that is possible)
@kegmonkey That depends on what you're up for. If you're going to fight blades, you might want some kind of thin kevlar/metal mesh/plastic composite, plus padding.
For modern military fighting, the level IV vests weigh something around 30 lb's... so a full suit of that would be impractical... especially since it's not pliable when layered as many times as a military vest (not rigid though) and it retains heat quite "efficiently." Ceramic backing material would need to be taken into account too.
(On a different tack) I'm still not sure what exactly would you use the armor for? Future, contemporary or historical battlefields? Sorry for being a nuisance ahead of time, but I must know, since I like to (on occasion) turn the problem of modern and historical armor over in my head.
I know armour doesn't hinder you enormously, but there were still times when heavy armour crushed the army it's supposed to protect. The English had this problem fighting the French in marshland (drowning ec.).
@TheHolyWenzel If i remember correctly i cant remember which battle but the french lost to the english when the french knights fought dismounted against the english. The french were immune until they where forced to the ground then yeoman longbowman just shoved a dagger threw the helm.
@TheHolyWenzel True. Sometimes you need speed and agility to outmanuver the enemy. BUT!... think about If you outmanuver them and get into close combat and you dont have armor on... if yo uare not the best in fencing you'd be dead pretty fast. Even if you are good in fencing in a real battle you dont fight 1 enemy but you are surrounded by many enemies any of who can hit you from any direction. let's not even begin about arrows. You'd be dead before you get to the enemy if the enemy is anarcher.
@requiemforaflower Did you ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe, the French had MORE than one battle against the English? Because it's entirely possible you're talking about a different battle.
Just throwing that out there for you to consider...
@ihaterobbie123 i should not that the english had the advantage of french wearing heavy armor not the otherway around. for if i think were talking about the same battle the british army mostly existed out of archers.
@hanbaal "Does too!" "Am not" "Ya can't" What age are you? 7? Start talking like a normal person for fuck sake.
It's easy to maneuver in full armour and anyone who tells you otherwise is clueless. It might surprise you, but suits of armour are designed for men to fight in and fighting requires a lot of movement.
Now stop trying to inform someone who knows more than you. I had hoped being told you're wrong would spur you to do some reading. It seems "nuh-uh" is your only response.
@ihaterobbie123 Didn't the French have that same problem when they faced off against the British longbow men during the battles of Crecy, Pointers, and Agincourt? I believe I misspelled the battles but at Agincourt they had to trudge through mud to get at the British position while the arrows were dropping down on them.
@schizoidboy Yep, but those were more down to superior planning rather than the armour. What I was talking about is armoured men drowning in knee-deep mud after their armour became waterlogged.
@ihaterobbie123 I heard at the battle of Agincourt the field had turned muddy from the rain and that the French knights tried to advance on foot at one point. I might be wrong but I heard this in a lecture once so in this instance if it is true then the French had the same problem as well as the British.
@schizoidboy Yes that did happen, but try to imagine what would happen to an unarmoured army advancing through mud being shot at by longbowmen. The armour was almost a non factor, Agincourt was a huge tactical success for the English.
Read the Battle of Agincourt. It was actually the frogs, I mean the French, who tried to run around in mud with full armor before commencing combat. I suggest people read it, its quite awesome so I don't want to spoil it for you. If you are to lazy to read, you wont even be reading this...
@krukur Ahh the Battle of Agincourt, the French did possibly the most disastrously stupid series of blunders in any battle I have ever learned off. haha
The problem with that times armor was that it was so heavy that if a knight/heavily armored dude got knocked off his feet, he couldn't get up again, which made it easy for anyone with a dagger to kill him(when he was on the ground, that is) XD Looks cool though =P
yes actually. as i said, the armor back then was extremely heavy at some point, which made it difficult to move. just imagine having about 80-100 kg of armor strapped to your body. you don't move around to fast. Take "Knights Tale": main char. gets new, light armor; easy to move in. Everyone else: heavy armor, they can barely get on their horse. good protection, yes. agility, no.
After a quick search, I find now that I have been wrong in my statements. I didn't know there was a difference between combat- and tournament armor. But I still hold on to that if anyone in plate armor gets knocked of his feet (for example on his back), he would have a hard/harder time to get up on his feets.
Especially when you fight for hours in a hot Summer, you need a realy good stamina to survive. But at the end of a Battle, after hours of violence hand to hand combat, you are just rooted!
hey bro. marshal arts movies are full of kung fu guys poping back up to their feet, after hitting the ground. why is it that folks just cant see armored combatants doing the same? if your life depended on it, knowing that sooner or later you will trip or tilt over, wouldn't you get good at coming back up? armored combatants are not turtles some, even in armor, exceed an average persons dexterity and agility. yes, its astonishing.
Being a re-enactor, I own an armour made on the copy of a museum piece really existing, made with the same materials, shape and thickness. Offers a great protection and mobility, and it weights no more than 30kgs. With it on I can move quite easily, even run (at a slower pace, indeed, but I can run). And I am quite agile, I can do a very elaborate fighting. BTW, a Knight's Tale is not historical at all... and, armour never weighted more than 40kgs in history... it must be an effective thing
Fully amoured people were fairly rare and were worth a hefty ransom, so you wouldn't kill them if you didn't absolutely have to.
Full plate armour weighs about 40-60 lbs IIRC, and it's usually well distributed. A trained man can jump, run, do cartwheels, and swim (with a little difficulty) in it.
Oh, and nobody fucking spun around to strike in a real fight. It's all based on economy of movement, not Hollywood flash.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wait for them to close in, whip out your blade and do a spinning/ whirlwind type move, it works because most of them dont expect it and most dont parry in time ( unless there pros) funny vid tho lol
@timofthedead100 you're watching a video titled 'i am invulnerable' featuring a guy in armour.. and you're surprised to see people commenting (although seriously questionable, but what isnt on youtube) that there's something more noble about the days of old when people actually had to face their enemy. You're -really- that surprised to see that sort of comment on -this- video. Put down the roids son. Butthurt sniper much?

Full plate armour weighs about 40-60 lbs IIRC, and it's usually well distributed. A trained man can jump, run, do cartwheels, and swim (with a little difficulty) in it.
Oh, and nobody fucking spun around to strike in a real fight. It's all based on economy of movement, not Hollywood flash.

The stuff sounds heavy. How much does that weigh?!

wait for them to close in, whip out your blade and do a spinning/ whirlwind type move, it works because most of them dont expect it and most dont parry in time ( unless there pros) funny vid tho lol

this should be the way of fighting, why should we be whimps and fight eachother with snipers from a few miles away when we can do this :D

timofthedead100 5 months ago
@timofthedead100 you're watching a video titled 'i am invulnerable' featuring a guy in armour.. and you're surprised to see people commenting (although seriously questionable, but what isnt on youtube) that there's something more noble about the days of old when people actually had to face their enemy. You're -really- that surprised to see that sort of comment on -this- video. Put down the roids son. Butthurt sniper much?

Haha! That's how you take down a fully armoured opponent!
Saw your stuff on DeviantArt, bytheway. Freaking awesome.

[warning, the following sentence is highly ironic] I say that European martial arts suck just because I have seen this video.
[Warnung: der folgende Satz ist höchst ironisch gemeint] Ich finde, dass Europäische Kampfkünste nichts bringen, weil ich dieses Video gesehen habe.
Malachayas 3 years ago
