@berkelusa You should be proud to have been related to Rene Gagnon who seemed to be the one who watched out for Ira Hayes when he was troubled with the "war demons" after the war. God bless to all those who fought in WWII who are now leaving us to meet up with those who went before.
Motorhead, Great job. I loved how you removed the flag raisers in the order of when they died. My dad, brother and I just rode 4 hours yesterday to visit Franklin Sousleys grave. It was an awesome ride and a humbling memorial. Thanks.
@fiscornioman You obviously have done no homework on the subject. An invasion of mainland Japan would have cost possibly hundreds of thousands American lives.
@fiscornioman Like I said, do some research. There's a great book that you should read called"The Rape of Nanking" I believe someone like yourself, who is concerned with destroying innocent lives, would find this very interesting.
@fiscornioman They were warned. Then they ignored the first bomb so we dropped a second. Am I proud? War in general isn't something to be proud of. But when it comes down to my team or the other team, I root for the Home team. You want to talk about innocent lives? Do we start with the bombing of Pearl Harbor? How about the Holocaust? Lenningrad? All innocent people. Dropping those bombs saved American lives and shortened the war. Plain and simple.
If the germans finally could have bombed the US with nuclear weapons, that would have been one of the most tragic and savage episodes in human history.
But... the bombings in Japan were just a way to "shorten" the war and end the problem from the root.
Im not a military expert, i dont know what could have been done to end that situation, but the thing i know is that the US had a far superior strategic advantage in that moment, and maybe the war would have been longer, but that innocent people wouldnt have died for no reason.
The thing i hate about all this is the "Hip Hip Hurrah, we are the good boys" feeling that America loves to experience all the time, while they did what they did.
@fiscornioman Now I'm starting to see your true color. Was it your great grandfather, Won Sum Cock, that was killed or are you just an Nip with a big imagination? HA HA
No, im not, i have no relation at all with the japanese, im from spain, but your comment shows no respect at all for the innocent people who died that day.
Youre the kind of American that makes America what is today:
@fiscornioman Spain!?! Are you kidding me? You guys are the biggest pussies on the planet. You didn't help in WW1 or WW2. What a load of bullshit. Your country does NOTHING, then you judge others. Fuck You.
Unfortunately, Spain legitimate government was overthrown by fascism (Franco) and also he couldnt "help" in WW2 because the country was fucked up due to the civil war.
Why the US army didnt liberated Spain?
Because they saw a potential strategic ally for the upcoming cold war, we still have american airfields here.
Lots of people died assasinated and tortured by Franco's regime, with the passivity of the Allies (US included).
It was their duty, the Allies liberated the whole european territory from the fascists, and left spain alone due to potential strategic resources.
Anyway, i will be always thankful to the american, english, irish and many other volunteers that joined the Republican international brigades to defend freedom and failed.
Just been to Washington and saw this memorial in real live. So this clip was very nice to see. I even got à bit emotional when I saw it... Very well done!

@dwctek actually no i never served...yet i am joining the marine corps pretty soon though and the name comes from the movie and the blackhawks hockey team kinda made this name blackhawk used to be my favorite movie
@Blackhawk5656 --- I am a veteran. Because I wish I could join you. I would love to visit Iwo Jima.
@NirvanaLord - "Missed the Dance" as in the War.. Right place.. right time.. doing that Flag raise got them sent home where they were Hero's.. Media took over from there.. Rene' was my great uncle.. and he has all of them correct..
I should think any misconceptions would clear up if you read "Flags of Our Fathers" .. by James Bradley - son of the corpsman. Both flags had significance but the first was the one everyone there recognized and the cheers went up all around. Posed photos were made. The replacement flag was not posed and it was just a very very lucky shot. The lucky composition took it to history.
truemarine...I know the truth and where did you get your information anyway? The first flag was raised during the battle, but it was too small, so they asked (the Brass) for a larger one put up, so that where Six Marines took part in doing and you see the results, read your History.
Actually that picture was taken awhile after. The island was already occupied by the U.S. They took it just to make it seem more dramatic. The real picture is just a guy sticking it in the ground, you can look this up too if you wish. None the less, god bless the brave men and woman who serve or served.
Joe took this picture within seconds as they raised the flag, someone said "Joe you are going to miss it" and Joe took the picture without seeing if he had taken a clear good shot, even he found out what he took after it became famous.
Wonderful video! I love the USA and I love Old Glory! These men are Heroes and they will never be forgotten! God bless all those who have served our country to keep us free!

Micheal Strank was born in Conemaugh Township in Johnstown, PA. He is well known by the people that live here and he is considered one of the bravest of the brave. He gave it his all and sacrificed his life to save his comrades. My grand father actually knew him so that gives me a clear indication he was special to everyone.
YOUR GRANDFATHER KNEW HIM!!! THAT IS AWESOME!I would have loved to know Mike Strank.Like actually see him. My grandfather fought in the same war. He got shot six times and survived. He NEVER talked about the war in his lifetime. only at 911 and it was 1 sentance. And now hes gone. i wish he would have told me more.
Micheal Strank is my hero. When I go in the marines I want to be like he was. He was the best of the best. I don't understand why he had to die though.

Very well done and a fitting tribute. As the Iwo Jima memorial says "Uncommon valor was a common virtue."

Strank was a true Marine.
He fought until the end.
Sadly his life ended by our mistake.
I can truly say he is my hero.

Not true. He was born somewhere in Europe. His brother has a vid on here. They moved to Penn when he was three. He was and still is one of my heroes.

Micheal Strank is my hero. When I go in the marines I want to be like he was. He was the best of the best. I don't understand why he had to die though.
