Absolutely great. In 1962 we used to call the girl behind the counter in the record shop in Manchester LaVern after her (she looked nothing like her!). I could listen to this again and again.
@serpico56 You would have absolutely loved LaVern...and especially live; I got the chance to meet and talk the great LaVern before and after her set at the Cinegrill in The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in the 90's. LaVern was so down to earth, autographed my Atlantic 78s and 45s, and was stunned to see the WEA-Atlantic compilation lp "The Phil Spector-Atlantic Records Sessions," of which LaVern's Phil-produced single was featured. I took pictures of her after the show with her son, beautiful lady.
Lavern had to really fight to get her records played on "white" radio in the 50's. She also fought to have Georgia Gibbs and other white singers from stealing her arrangements and covering her songs in that era. Us white kids were smart enough to buy the original black artists and helped them to get the fame they deserved.
@bigdancd ON THE OTHER HAND, THE "WHITE" DJ'S FAILED TO GIVE "THESE" ARTISTS THEIR DUE BY NOT PLAYING THIS WONDERFUL MATERIAL. IT'S A DIFFERENT ERA NOW AND THANKS TO YOUTUBE, AND ALL THOSE THAT UNSELFISHLLY CONTRIBUT TO IT "WE" NOW CAN ENJOY ALL OF THIS T-E-R-R-I-F-I-C "STUFF! TOM D BRICK,NJ

If anyone of you want to hear LaVern at her best, take a listen to "Play It Fair". One of the greatest R & B hits of Lavern's from early in her career.
Excellent This is my Favorite Lavern Baker Song Thanks So Much For the post 50************** And Favorited and i subbed to you Thanks For your Excellent channel God Bless KTF A Friend From Canada
lavern baker most be soprano voice shes hits them high notes so easy onething I rember she will growl and a song there want be a etta james or if was not for lavern baker
I'm so happy with this! I didn't know her until I heard "I'm gonna get you" and then I heard the older songs. Unfortunately, She passed away a few months before I first heard her sing.
One of the first R & R concerts I went to back in 1955 featured LaVern along with Bill Haley and the Comets, Big Joe Turner, etc., and she was awesome. I'll never forget talking to her backstage before she went on. She asked me what my favorite song was and I told her, Play It Fair. When she was done with her set, she came off stage and with a smile said; "how did you like that, Danny Boy?" I told her it was incredible. Being white and the era it was, I told her she was my favorite singer!
Thanks for sharing this rare prize. I don't know who recorded the original, but I have a copy of Big Joe Turner doing the song probably in the 50's or early 60's. The CD doesn't give a recording date. I think both the Turner and Baker versions are wonderful.

This is one of LaVern's "comeback" performances, taped in 1991 for A&E after she had been out of the country for nearly 20 years.

I think this is from the early 1950's the B side of Tweedle Dee, her first number 1

it's been a long tome but no one compares to Laverne ever then and now..Queen of the blues right along with Billie Holiday

For 3 minutes and 40 seconds, this song is hers. Baker's ability to transform this song into her own creation is a testament to her vocal ability.

Cool. I've always liked Elvis' version of this- as well as the original by Lonnie Johnson. The tempo change is kinda cool.
