  • although I dont like this technology, and you already removed one of my comments about the Ne transformer danger, I did have an idea that might help. though not because of ease or low cost. prob add cost in the long run. but if you charged the rxn chamber with nitrous oxide from a cream charger, the kind use for whipedcream. lt is a source of nitrogen and oxygen starting blocks, dont know if it will assimilate correct oxygen content, but could enrich yeild. just a thought

  • I'm usually not one to waffle about health and safety but I think that you really should have mentioned that this should be performed in a well ventilated area. Even though it is contained mostly, some nitrogen dioxide is still going to get out. Nitrogen dioxide is extremely toxic. Also high voltage wire should be used for the electrical connections. Most jumpers are only rated at around 600 volts. But anyways I think I might try this. I never thought of doing it this way. Good job!

  • Interesting, I tried this using a microwave oven transformer but too much heat started to melt everything and I am surprised that the plastic in your rig is not melting but the aluminum tape seems to act as a heat sink. Good job!

  • You can make a better generator if you make your "cell" smaller and heat resistant, and put 4-5 cells in series so the gases from one enters another and the gas will get concentrated. It can be efficient enough to constantly pump air in and get a constant flow of gas. You can use a timer, so it keep turning on and off, avoiding the overheating. You can use an acid-resistant screen in the point of hose to make smaller bubbles. It will give much more reation area, using -gas converting +acid.

    @regretissin: You misunderstood the 4% figure quoted in Wikipedia on the Birkeland-Eyde process. It refers to the concentration of nitric oxide in the air that passed through the arc. The concentration of the final product would eventually reach a saturation point, perhaps near 70%; but I think that would be impractical because well before that point I believe the solution would begin to dissolve the oxides very inefficiently.

  • You know, efficiency may be improved if you build an actual jacob's ladder. More area for the plasma to take place at, therefore, more gas introduced to the heat. When you create the vacuum, in order to suck the gas through, it is traveling through the arc but may not contact it enough.

  • @MrTechGuy1995 If you use a sealed collection vessel with a pressure release valve for safety, will more nitrogen dioxide dissolve increasing the yield of the nitric acid? Also, is it worth while to recycle the NO2 that does not dissolve in the first vessel and send it to a second vessel to react with more H2O2?

  • @Hume820 Yes! This is the way to go! Higher pressure and lower temperature dissolves more gas. And yes, its a good idea to recycle the NO2. I did not read your comment, so i wrote about this too. Its better to use several gas cells in series so the NO2 gets concentrated. I thinking about using a ultrasonic humidfier and a destilation set, so it will have much more reaction area, so you get a higher yield.

  • @MrTechGuy1995 You're better off just using a nitrate salt. Why are you using a roundabout method if you can just buy pounds of nitrate salt for a dozen bucks?? That power supply is more expensive than the glassware and reagents needed to make the same amount of acid.

    It's interesting how young people think they're indestructible and can take on the world. Some like to destructively distil wood indoors, without a fumehood. Others play around with NO2 indoors, without proper ventilation.

  • what you have is a crude generator that uses the Birkeland-Eyde process. however under ideal conditions this process is very energy intensive requireing more than 1.5 Kw to produce 100 grams at the low concentration of around 4%. This comtraption however is far from ideal and i doubt that any signifigent amount of nitric acid would be produced

    Im thinking of building one myself, but I´ll try to use pyrex or some other heat-resistent glassware. Have you ever had trouble with the NOx corroding the plastic?

    Approx what is the longest run-time you´ve had?

  • @shmuunk It's 9000 volts, I had a friend give one to me. I never had problem of NOx corroding them, and I had it run for about an hour At most is what I recommend any further you could overheat the transformer or the bowl! :D Enjoy!

  • I am using a computer power supply giving 12 volts which could create an arc between two carbon rods of at least 1.5 cm. and i think it gets really hot .Could it work for this project?

  • @fortuneplant1 Umm.... Try it, It might take a long time, But you should get NOx, Becareful that it doesn't melt anything!

  • So you mean to say that I could use the carbon arc to produce nox even if it doesn't require high voltages all I need is an inch gap? 

  • @fortuneplant1 Well higher Voltage means bigger gap... The Closer the gap, the Less area there is for electrons to flow, the less NOx will form in a constant time. Don't try this with your House Mains, It will not work! You need a Transformer to step up the voltages to create a stream of electrons.

  • @fortuneplant1 Well.... It depends, I'd say 1 inch gap for 10 min = around 5 liters of NOx, Be Careful It gets really Hot, Turn it off and on and keep flowing it into 20mL Hydrogen Peroxide. You get a 11 Molarity. Don't take my word for this, it's all estimation. This is the reason why it is NOx X= various nitrogen compounds. But mostly NO2. So This varies yata yata yata.

  • This is very interesting. Probably the best video I've seen on making NOx. There is one other method that I don't think require very high voltage. You know in the old days cinema projectors used carbon arc projection lamp. So I did some experiments a long time ago with the carbon core of a normal pen. Then i attatched each carbon rod to a car battery charger. When short circuiting the rods to each other there where a bright light. This can be used to make NOx. End of allowed chars to type.
