And I wanted to add - I actually like Alex Van Halen, and I think he is an extremely inventive drummer, but that solo still sucked ass. Compared to Bonham, Aldridge, Cozy Powell, Eric Carr, and tons of other drummers who play Drum Solo's - this was simply rotten. Big deal, he played double bass while he repeatedly bashed on a cymbal and a few toms. If you liked this solo, PLEASE watch a Mike Mangini or Mike Terrana Drum solo.

Alex still cranks out some of the best solos for my money. Even after I went through my wank-ass jazz worshipper phase. Getting technical and jerking off is easy as pie. However, not even the almighty Weckl or Thomas Lang can match the theatrics and entertainment value of some of the old rock drummers. Sure, they're a big hit at Modern Drummer each year...but that's to people who know what to look for. Sheer entertainment is another beast and Alex is still leagues ahead of many at that.

On the whole Metheny argument,

I just want to say that any one who says Pat Metheny sucks must have an IQ of about 12, and is probably in the 6th grade. That being said, I'm not saying that you have to actually enjoy Pat Metheny's music, but saying he sucks is like saying getting dragged through a moat filled with acid and flesh-eating alligators while listening to a Bon Jovi cover band is fun. Because everybody knows it's just not true.

NOT an electric drum. This is back when bands could actually play their instruments without the help of studio engineers. If it's no big deal I'm sure you would be the one making millions of dollars playing to sold out arenas around the world. Alex's problem is that Eddie is the best guitarist in the world, so it's easy to be overlooked back there behind the drum kit.

Well, I did. All I can say is that everyone within a mile of a big headline concert was wasted. So, Alex's drum-roll solo was actually pretty impressive to the wasted masses. He may not qualify for the Pat Metheney group with his style, but he's been entertaining wasted VH fans for decades - and getting paid to do it...
