My opinion to these GameOvers:

SMB - On the NES, I used to be enraged when I lost, but on the SNES, it has given hope to beat the game with a little more effort.

SMB 2 - NO matter what, I hated this game over screen, it's like Birdo is rubbing failure into your face and telling you to suck an egg, get it? Look at her for solution.

SMB 3 - What a surprise to see Mario surprised at you for losing all your lives.

SMW - Classic, yet it still gives me goosebumps, it's so dramatic for a tune.

The Game Over theme I remember the most back then is the SMB. It says "Bummer, you died... wanna try again?" Even though I hated to die five times, I LOVED to hear this sad theme, especially when I hit Save & Continue and a curious sound played.

SMB: Has music that says to anybody tht they suck at the game

SMB 2: I don't know what went through nintendo

SMB 3: Very Weird

SMW: Puts me in the mind of when Mr. Rogers goes off.

Call me crazy, but the SMB Game Over segment should be culturally significant lol. Why? Aside of having a catchy tune, it teaches us that they leave us 5 chances for making things better and not to screw it up lol. But seriously, things like this should not be forgotten cuz nowadays, it's fail and try again, fail and try again...

Very good point. 90% of today's games don't even give you a life limit of any kind anymore. Logically you can't even fail and I've seen several games that don't even HAVE a Game Over screen, as you can't get a game over.

"TIME UP" screens always scared the hell out of me. Anyone remember Kickle Cubicle for the NES? If you ran out of time on that game, the screen would turn black and white and a big star would come crashing out of the sky and freaking EAT you. Try being about seven years old and not being traumatized by that. O.o

They have this "It's okay, just try again" vibe to it. The Donkey Kong Game Overs make you feel like crap. And actually show you what happens when you blow it.

The Time Up screen is the same as the Game over screen in SMB3 somehow I did manage to forget the Time Up screen for SMB, though it's exactly the same as the Game Over one, just say's Time Up, instead of Game Over.
