Why nobody did that test with Assassins and rapists??? really if they got killed or just die or only suffer , It had been the best for the humanity, nobody ever did cares if that people disappear.
@Royertroyer99 The honour of the first person chosen to travel in space was a great honour, and that honour should not be given to criminals "never". as you know history always remembers Yuri Gagirn, Alan Shepard and Neil Armstrong. Even here the animals chosen are heros remembered for eternity like the Russain Dog Laika, the first creature to orbit in Space!!
@ERICAWSOMENESS yes true, the first living creature to Orbit in space was a Russian dog name Laika, flew on Sputnik 2 on 3 Nov 1957, though other dogs and monkeys were sent to do space hops before that Laika.
@KurdstanPlanetarium Yes, and its also true that is dog WAS sent up to die. Its capsule was modified so the front heatshild came of before re-entry and fried it as they wanted to see what wouldhappen should a sheild fail on a human mission. Sad but true. took them years to admit it as well so imagine what se they dont tell us.
The only real reasons for promoting or trying to delay extinction are economical or moral, not scientific. People also seem to champion the cause of cute, fluffy animals only, not insects, plants or bacteria(the majority of terran life) when we purposefully eradicated all strains of Variola major and Variola minor in the wild no one came forth and said "viruses have rights too!"
Exctictions are not a "good" or "bad" thing and nature isnt a "balance". Nature is the battlefield of millions of competing species, not some magical godess or wondrous thing to worship. Cycles of extinctions and new habitats forming is a completely normal thing. In fact, we could use our nukes to glass the entire surface of the earth and boil half of the oceans away and we would only create new habitats and open the way for new species who could adapt to changed conditions.
If only those animals had done something of any purpose. Sure, now we've been to the Moon, but we still can't get clean water to millions of kids, or stop fucked-up governments *coughUSAcough* manipulating the poor and ignorant of our planet for their own clownish gains. Black comedy. Without the comedy bit.
this is so beautiful. amazing is to believe there is people still today who doesnt even imagine space has been reached by humanity, but i swear this century things will change
@fear614 The advancement of the human species? Are you serious? Oh, god, that did make me laugh....and then I realised you meant it :S Well, when us yuman beans have advanced a bit, I'm hoping that someone will be so good as to let me know :)
@Sascopa You have to realize that space travel is literally our only chance for long term survival. Our planet and our sun will not be around forever. Sending these animals in to space was our way of testing the waters. Yes, there are millions of kids starving, but there's no use in feeding them and ignoring the fact that our species is going to go extinct. What's the point? It'd all be for nothing.
@fear614 Unbelievable. Why is the idea that our planet will end, and we will become extinct such a horror? There doesn't seem to be much indication that the human race has anything but a rather deleterious effect on the natural world around it. So, is "long-term survival", so important? No. And while it ponders if (IF) it will ever be able to live in an sci-fi space city, the human species, here and now, struggles to manage itself better than some families of insects. How clever.
@Sascopa The entire point of us being here is to survive for as long as possible. We are still a young, stupid species and we carry a lot of evolutionary baggage. I'd also like to note that if we were to feed, house, and care for all of the starving/sick among us, we would destroy our planet. There's too many of us and our planet can't sustain us all. Either we pack up and move out or we let the weak die.
@fear614 I'd dispute that the point of existence is to remain in it for as long as possible. The extinction of the human race in due course seems to be not just a likelihood, but also a good thing; extinction is a natural phenomenon, and as I said before, the human race is not generally beneficial to the planet it inhabits.
As for the over-population myth, it's just that. A myth. There ARE too many people abusing the planet, there are not too many people, space -wise & resources - wise.
@fear614 What have we done that's so beneficial? Wow, we went to space. That's nice. How has it helped us? Has it cured global warming, poverty, mental illness, AIDS, cancer, etc. Why the hell should innocent beings die to satiate our curiousity. This is disgusting that we feel we do the most heinous things with animals against their will on the basis of just being human. That makes us no better. We are a cruel species indeed.
@bekindtoanimals100 I agree with you. But at the end of the day it is mankind who has the opportunity for long-term survival, and the key to that survival is space exploration. No one will care about dogs or monkeys when the planet has changed to an extent that inhibits life. We humans, on the other hand, will hopefully be on a road trip to the nearest earth like planet. And why? Because "wow, we went to space". Cool huh?
@Pulseczar1 It's not that black and white, and you know it. These animals are lacking something that separates us on a major scale, the ability to truly think and perceive like we do. Whether you like it or not, WE are the top of the fish bowl. WE have intelligence, WE have consciousness, and WE have the ability. We have to go to space eventually to secure our survival, why risk human life and limb when we have animals galore? It sucks but it's reality, I faced it long ago.
@fear614 How do we know animals don't have consciousness? What is your definition of 'consciousness'? Why is intelligence your deciding factor? I'd think pretty much all that mattered would be the capacity for suffering, which we have _no_ reason to believe animals do _not_ possess, and many reasons to believe that they do. What's so great about intelligence in the huge scheme of things? It can be used equally for bad and good. How does being smart make you more deserving of not being tortured?
@fear614 The reason why it's "okay" to experiment on animals is because they aren't a part of our social contract. The monkey cosmonaut's parents aren't going to complain to us about frying their son with x-rays, or try to exact vengeance. They aren't going to demand for justice and fairness, or /anything/. Pretty much the only negative consequence that we experience for testing on animals is what consequence we make out of it ourselves (guilt and so forth). It's "okay" because we can...
@fear614 I get the sense that you don't want to continue this conversation, and that's fine if you don't, but I think it would be interesting if we explored why you think animal testing is for the best, and how it's for the best.
@Pulseczar1 Well I stated in my first original comment that a few animals for the advancement of the human species isn't much of a loss. I don't particularly agree with things like animal product testing but when it comes to the beginnings of human space exploration I think it was the best move for us. One day we'll have to leave this planet and when we do we'll thank the animals who allowed us to get the ball rolling safely and at no harm to us.
@fear614 Is it right that one creature suffers being microwaved alive so that another creature can gain benefit from it? We'll some day thank the animals that we tortured, whom had no choice in the matter of giving themselves to the betterment of mankind? Even if they were actually capable of understanding our "thank you", the ones that survived, do you think they would be happy with that? What if people decided to use you in the same way for their selfish gain? Wouldn't be okay? Why?
@Pulseczar1 I'm not really disagreeing with you, mate. But you do have to understand that it was either send a human up or send a stray dog up. Personally I'm perfectly fine with that decision. Clearly you don't feel the same way but I at least hope you understand that the loss of these animals for the advancement of the intelligent species at least somewhat justifiable. When the sun dies we'll hopefully be far away safe and sound thanks to these critters.
@fear614 [1] It's a difficult and interesting ethical question. I don't fault you for your stance on this. It's not like you hold some radical view. 99.9% of people probably agree with you. I'm kind of just playing devil's advocate, for the sake of exploration of the discussion. I don't entirely disagree with you. It does bother me, though, that people believe that more intelligent creatures deserve to suffer less.
@fear614 [2] I think it's just an excuse to be selfish, and put other creatures' happiness below our own. However, I too enjoy the benefits gained through animal testing, and this is a dog-eat-dog world after all. But, where nature has no ethics, we are smart enough to transcend that and treat other creatures the way we'd like to be treated, because when I'm nicer to you, you tend to be nicer to me. However, with animals, we don't have to be concerned with them getting revenge very much.
@fear614 [3] So, that affects our motivation to be kind and ethical to them. Then I guess it comes down to empathy and justice. And for some reason, we as a species, at this time, seem to put personal gain before empathy and justice.
@kjcinny I'm sorry you feel that way. I just don't see the need in crying over a handful of animals when they are being used for something so important.
@YouWatchMePee well are they doing it to us? in this world? now?.....i dont think so. I think we should stop experimenting and letting animals go suffer from stuff just for our sake! we shouldnt use them as tools.
@Ryukushinn We didn't become dominant species on this planet by letting ourselves get eaten. I respect animals and nature, but I understand what comes first. Heres an example, the medication for rabies was at the cost and suffering of dozen or so dogs; but thanks to that medication millions of dogs, and other animals (even humans) benefitted overall.
well not all the animals lived. a lot did though, some were treated poorly, the Russians treated Laika good though, but thats about it, they killed many other dogs, and the US killed some black bears among monkeys
Shit i would pay some of my tax payer money for the chance those animals got. They all survived anyways whats the big deal? we test shampoo on animals with way higher consequences.
