  • Please note that as of 10.7.3 AND The new Nvidia drivers, you don't need to use ATY Init, nor do you need to edit the driver! I will post up a link

  • @PuncNugget Uhmm, actually I am a gamer... I don't have anything against Apple, dont get me wrong. The only thing I dont like is their "exclusivness". For the same price you buy a mid range mac you can buy a high end PC. In fact, I'vr tryied to use transformation packs but none of them work well :-(. I dont quite understand yet why all the proffessionals use MACs for video edditing and such. Can u explain me?? Cause im into that also.

  • MACS SUCK!! Get a PC and get a life

  • @sebascorrea97 I do have a PC that I built as well. It's rather funny actually, in many ways I am able to upgrade my Mac Pro moreso than even it...

  • @sebascorrea97:

How 'bout this, Get the right PC parts and configure it to make a Hackintosh with one SSD having Mac OS X (for your high end apps like Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop work and render better) AND the other SSD having Windows 7 for your video games. Because that's what Windows 7 is only good for anyway; since you sound like a gamer...

  • what about the real performance cuda-score?

  • @Arlanotrack In what? Like in Cuda-z or something? Which OS X program should I use to get a CUDA Score?

  • So , I can buy that graphics , put that there and it will work ?

  • @MrGulTher I'll do a tutorial soon, that should explain it

  • Will radeon 7970 work ?

  • @MrGulTher Not currently, according to the Netkas community. I don't really mess with ATI Cards in OS X much. It probably will in the future though, since they say that 6970's are working with 10.8, and traces of the 7000 series are present in the 10.8 drivers.

Nvidia cards are easier to do this with in OS X.

(In windows on a mac pro, though, you can use whatever card you want, including the 7970.)

  • @FrenchLetsPlay Should work just fine I think. Not sure if OS X will freak out if ATY_Init isn't there or not.

  • Can anyone tell me if this video card will work in an early 2008 Mac Pro (3.1)? I would be very interesting in trying it (have newest OSX version). Also, if anyone can point me out to a video showing me exactly how to modify the Device ID and ATY_Init. I'd greatly appreciate it and be sure to pass it along to other Mac owners that this can be done. Thanks to wayoutforce for providing the cable info! So much for Windows fans rubbing it in Mac users faces that we can't upgrade like them!

  • @ronindavid It should indeed work in any mac pro. I don't think apple made any changes to the Power Supply. I'm planning on making a video about installing ATY_Init soon, as well as a tutorial for the Kext's.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome Awesome! I look forward to seeing it!

  • @LianellEsorrasilome I was just going to say, could you follow up with that... that would be awesome man.

  • for the newb newbs putting this in a mac pro. You need two of these cables to run from the aux mac pro pci express power ports, that are on the motherboard near your pci slots: 270744915851 (type that number into ebay's search box) and one of these (270751535589) to convert one of the previous cables (that I just mentioned to order) to an 8 pin.

  • so what ur saying is i can put this gtx 580 in a mac os?

  • The squealing sound is called coil whine. The chokes are vibrating, causing a squealing noise, usually when you run an application that goes 200+ fps. At least, that's what I've found. Some hot glue around the base of the choke usually does the trick.

  • Can you run this off 10.6.8??

  • @campbpar No, 10.7.2 is the earliest that the 500 series is supported in.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome Thanks man!

So other than the 6-to 8 pin adapter- there's nothing else to get, right?

  • @campbpar Pretty much. Just the fiddling with ATY_Init and the Kext's is the annoying part.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome Thanks brah.

  • Awesome! Tell your buddy to keep selling those- I'll pick up one if the price is still good in a few months!

  • When you had two of these running in Octane, was Octane able to use the full combined 6GB for loading and rendering a scene, or just 3GB from a single card?

Also, do you think it is safe to run one of these cards in a Mac Pro 2008 (3.1) without an external PSU?

  • Currently have a GTX 285, would you say its worth upgrading to a 580? I do most work in PP CS5.5 with CUDA on.

  • @Ve3troGamesMedia I'd say a 580 is about 2X what a 285 is in terms of Cores and overall CUDA performance. More VRAM too.

  • SLI or crossfire won't work in OSX so two 580's would be a waste in a mac.

  • @infraction2008 CUDA does not require SLI whatsoever. The main reason you'd put two of these in most macs in OS X is for CUDA capabilities in Premiere and other programs, as well as OpenCL capabilities. 580's are VERY good for CUDA, and definitely are the best existing solution at the moment (Aside from 590's).

  • @LianellEsorrasilome to make it more simple for me can you explain exactly what connects from the cards 6 pin and what connects from the card 8pin and to where they each connect to.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome pardon me for being a noob but I have only two 6 pins coming off the motherboard.

  • Hey LianellEsorrasilome's regarding the GTX 580 on the Mac Pro. How did you power the card? I have a single 580 card I would like to use on my Mac Pro (it is a first gen i9). I would really appreciate the help. Your video was great but you never mentioned exactly how you powered the first card.

  • @haoleSan I just use the normal Mac Pro PCIE Power cables (2 of them), and a 6 pin to 8 pin power plug.

    Try this listing on Ebay for the 8 pin;

    270751535589

Just put it in the search box.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome Where are you getting the power for the 6 pin to 8 pin power plug?

  • @haoleSan The mac pro provides plenty of power on its own. All that the 8 pin adds is Two grounds, not more voltage lines, the 6 pin to 8 pin combines those two additional grounds with some existing ones. You just connect the 6 to 8 pin cable to one of the existing 6 to 6 pin cables.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome So I ordered the 270751535589 from eBay which satisfies one 6 pin from the motherboard to the 8 pin on the card. Now I have to satisfy the 6 pin on the card but the cable that came with the card is a two 4 pin to 6 pin (like this: 220806373805). Will this cable substitute properly: 270818403966?

So I would end up doing this:

    - Video card 8pin to motherboard 6pin with this cable:270751535589

    - Video card 6 pin to motherboard 6pin with this cable:270818403966

  • The only thing is I only wish that the GTX 590 with 3 GB and 3 DVI ports would be able to run 3 monitors at the same time on Mac OS X Lion 10.7, but can only work 2 monitors. That's the only thing that stinks. But hey 2 - 30" Dell monitors is massive enough, even for video producing people out there. That's a lot of Real Estate... :-)

  • I love the comment he made at min. marker 4:41 where he says "right here where you can see..." See what? I think the camera needs glasses to see things better - LOL !!! Just kidding. Thanks for proving this can work. Honestly you can spend one the cost & get a EVGA SR-2 overclocking dual CPU Mobo to school any current Mac Pro Tower by near twice the speed for 1/3 the cost. I've not only seen it done but also have done it. You can do it too & you would have kept your GPU cards...

  • @ReNuTechSolutions Since the new Socket came out i'm debating whether to get an SR-2 and use older Xeons as the price drops, or whether to get the SR-3 when it comes out. I know one thing for sure though, the price of the SR-3 and new Xeons will be an absolute pain in the butt.

  • The model of the psu is "an antec racing stripe"... So basically u had to nigger rig the shit out of your garbage Mac to get the cards half-way working for full price... Fuck off.

  • @xxdizannyxx One card alone works perfectly with the Mac Pro's internal PSU, as I show in the video.

The 1200W is only necessary for SLI'ing two of them. I personally wouldn't advise running two 580's on any single power supply less than at least 850W. The 750W in my Friend's PC shut off very shortly after entering a game with both 580's hooked to it at the same time.

  • XD im sorry but pc is the best mac will never win against pc ^^

  • @rk3yb0arD Really depends on the PC in question. Upon adopting intel the line between Mac and PC has become much more blurred, in terms of hardware and software capabilities. "PC" is Very, very, broad.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome well pc is better becouse its more upgradeable :3 second of all MAC is marketed towards ignorant people who just want to know certain things like what button do i click for my email or what button do i click for google and so on

  • @LianellEsorrasilome oh and third of all you can build a sick PC for under 2000$ that would absolutely kick the crap out of that MAC

  • @rk3yb0arD This mac was made in 2009. You can build one for $500 that is more powerful. I know that because I did a couple weeks ago. Heck, the macs of modern day for under $2000 kick the crap out of this, and pretty much any PC from 2009.

And there's not really upgrades you can do to a PC that you can't do to a Mac of the same class (Laptop, all in one, or Desktop) with a few exceptions. Of course, there are many PC's you can upgrade with more stuff, but many that are even less so.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome first off thats a total lie! becouse the cheapest mac that can blow away a PC is like 4000$ and all in one computers laptops other pc's YOU OBVIOUSLY keep buying shitty PREBUILT!!! PC's were as mine is custom made by me

  • @rk3yb0arD I'm assuming you're talking about a gaming PC, right?

PM me the specs or post them in a reply, and we can see how it compares with the Mac Pro in terms of upgradeability.

  • @LianellEsorrasilome

  • @rk3yb0arD

The Mac Pro's motherboard has 4 PCIE Full size slots as opposed to 2. (2 x16 and 2 x4). Besides that though they're pretty much equal in graphics upgradeability. Your motherboard has PCI, the Mac pro doesn't.

GPU, we have the same (I'm curious, is yours Palit or EVGA?)

Not sure about the power supply in the MP.

CPU can be upgraded to other Xeons of the same socket, same goes for all Dual-Xeon boards.

Mac pro has 8 DDR3 slots (This one, dual CPU).

  • @LianellEsorrasilome yea but mines a quad core :P and yea EVGA becouse of the lifetime warrenty see all i would need to upgrade to more power is a better PSU and thats it plus take into consideration you might can watercool a mac idk but i personally think with the right case you dont need watercooled but anyway my point is with the case i have i can overclock passed others becouse my PC constantly stays cold!! below 25c most of the time useual temp never goes above 30c

  • @rk3yb0arD I also believe that yours has more flexible fan hookups, as well as a SPDIF. Mac pro doesn't I think.

Btw, how is the heat output of the i5-2500? I'm working on a mini-itx PC for a friend, and I'm considering going with that one. Heat is a concern for me though since I won't have room for a full size cooler. Would you say it's less heat than most of the i7's and the other i5's with pretty decent power?

  • @LianellEsorrasilome I personally it depends if he's doing gaming and don't plan of overclocking and the case has good airflow the defualt cooling fan should be fine what are the demintions? sorry i cant spell well becouse of my carple tunnel

  • @LianellEsorrasilome well for my I5 i useually get between 30c idle and 35 to 40c sometimes even 45c but note my computer case stays cool becouse of the way its made its open air also known as mesh case

  • @LianellEsorrasilome for cooling i would recomend the CORE I5 just take a look here you'll see

this should give you somewhat of an idea glad i could help :P ill PM you a link

  • @LianellEsorrasilome

  • Wow, that looks great. I wish I could help ya with holding the camera steady, haha :)

  • It's only like 10,000 bucks to get a Mac Pro comparable to a $2,000 desktop that you can build on Newegg.

  • @weinstein888 bought my mac pro with double intel xeon 3ghz cpu's for 500€

  • @mrtwig80 well that's just an out and out lie unless you bought it from a loving family member.

  • @weinstein888 In terms of gaming pc, yeah. Hell, I built a $500 i7 960 the other week. It's more powerful than this mac pro.

Workstations though are another story. Thanks to Xeons, the price difference can close in somewhat quick.

  • @weinstein888 And in addition to my previous comment, Apple's BTO pricing is horrendous (Same with just about any OEM, such as Alienware).

  • Simple question: What prefs file is it and how do you modify it? What exactly do you enter to modify it?

  • @nickgalena That's true, I use it with no helper card as well. I figured i'd point out that a helper card may come in useful Just in case the need for a helper card returns in a future revision of OS X.

  • @nickgalena Yes. ATY_Init is not dependant on which version of the Mac Pro you have, You just need 10.7.2 or higher for this card to work. You may need a proper helper card for your Mac Pro if the current OS requires it.

  • Mac OS X also natively supports the GTX 400 series??

  • @capidecallu Yes, every single GTX 400 card. Same for 200, 9000, 8000. All the way down to the 6000, at least until recently.

  • @capidecallu Well to add to my previous comment, you have to use ATY_Init unless its a flashed card. But the drivers ARE natively there for pretty much every single card (All the Fermi drivers are part of the "Quadro 4000 Drivers", which isn't exclusive to the 4000 or the quadros at all, covers all 400 and 500 series as of Lion.)

  • I recently picked up a GTX580, and this video seems to be the most information I can find online for installation. Could you further explain, "I simply had to enter the Device ID in to the Preference file within the drivers to make it recognize the card. To make it work, I installed a specific version of ATY_Init extension". I am running Lion. Thanks in advance.

  • @DIRECTORshane Sure, I have a post on the netkas site. I'm not sure how I seemed to get luckier than others when doing this though... Others followed my procedure and had trouble. Just google "Netkas gtx 580" and my post is the first result. If you need any further help feel free to message me here, and i'll gladly give any directions you need. I might actually post up a tutorial video for ATY_Init soon.

  • Could you make a gameplay of battlefield 3 or call of Duty under Windows installed with bootcamp?

  • @axelsnowman Sure, I got one of these back (Really happy I didn't end up getting both sold off). I'll do some game footage now but I only have on, since the other got sold off for me already. I'll do that soon.

  • sweet!! GTX 580 supreme power for all, what? 10 games? or are they up to 15 now? ;) Just yankin' your chain, but its only older macs that people make fun of (except for some uneducated ones)...It's otherwise common knowledge that modern macs have OK hardware support. I still prefer PC because you still can't custom build a mac.

  • @statikreg The thing I mostly liked about the mac pro is you can basically put whatever you want in it, including PC parts that apple doesn't normally offer, but hey, they work lol. I'm actually going to be building my own gaming PC for my other house soon, dunno if i'm going to hackintosh it. Gonna try, but I doubt it will work.

  • @statikreg hackintosh

  • Comment removed

  • @TheArea510 No, I originally got these intending to do gaming and design. I ended up not using them very much due to heat issues, so I figured i'd give running them in OS X a try. I sold them because I needed the cash, and the Heat/Power Consumption was too freaking high for my tastes.
