Most Spitfires were built at Castle Bromwich, but it was Southampton where the aircraft was designed and first built. I heard the story of a 15 year old boy who worked at the spitfire factory and was killed during the bombing, really touching. A great project for Southampton.
I didn't know Spitfires were made in Southampton. I saw the Spitfire fly over southampton on saturday and was almost reduced to tears. I think it will be a great tribute to the Battle of Britian pilots and Southampton.
The Spitfire is without doubt one of the worlds most significant aircraft. The ambition to honor the Spitfire with a suitable Tribute should be widely supported, a symbol of fair play over foul; it represents Britain at its best. The competition to design the Tribute should have been based on fairness and without the reputation of the Spitfire Tribute Foundation being called into question; it hasn't and Cllr John Hannides as chairman, needs to explain.
People always recognise the shape and sound of the spitfire. It will a great tribute for the nation.
