This is a really underrated fight. Good matchup of styles and it seems that if Tucker had a little more in the tank he could have really made it a fight. Not something you hear about as one of the great fights ever but definitely better than anything I've seen in the heavyweight division since Lewis retired. Thanks for posting!
Heavyweight boxer Tony Tucker, who scored a first-round victory at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Monday night, tested positive for marijuana in his postfight drug test, the State Athletic Commission said yesterday.
Tucker, the IBF champion until Mike Tyson defeated him in 1987, stopped Lionel Washington in 1 minute, 11 seconds. Tucker, 32, had a series of cocaine abuse problems in recent years
After the Tyson fight, Tucker failed to return to the ring for nearly two-and-a-half years, during which he became obese and addicted to cocaine. Dwindling his finances down to just $8,000, he blamed part of his situation to the anger he felt towards his payment on the Tyson fight. He claimed to have only received $250,000 out of a $1.2 million guarantee from promoter Don King.
YES WE KNOW, 1993 TONY TUCKER = WASHED UP, HANDPICKED DRUG ADDICT FOR THE GLASS JAWED BUM LENNOX LEWIS
tucker is a top heavy he has a chin jab speed and power i think hes top 15 all time heavyin his prime id put him beatin both klitschkos wlad by ko and vitali easy decison win he never left anythink at home
I think lewis is a great fighter although i thought he got lucky in a few fights ie fighting a old tucker, holyfield and tyson, a fucked up mccall,fight2, a non climatised akawanda. I believe the only fighter in history who had alround skills in his prime ie speed, chin, stamina, power and boxing ability was tyson. Although im a holyfield fan.
@mazbalboa i agree that a prime tyson would probably have beaten lewis, but i dont think that should deligitamise the fact that lewis beat him when he did. after all, tyson has no-one to blame for himself for the fact that his career was halted by his rapey tendencies... lewis' career shouldnt be blemished by the fact that tyson fucked up his chances to fight him earlier
@403766Lennox Lewis should have his own GRILL, just like George Foreman I think he will sell even more GRILLS than George Foreman ever did.
In fact, I think that the BRITISH MEDIA should FINALLY sit Lennox Lewis down and give him a GRILLING about how he SELECTED his OPPONENTS. Such as a 1993 Tony Tucker who was addicted to COCAINE and MARIJUANA (Suspensions) , and had 3 YRS out of boxing. Also AVOIDING a PRE-PRISON Tyosn until he smoking MARIJUANA and FAT in 2002!
If Tucker had got his act together after the Tyson fight, there is no telling what Tucker could have achieved... I Remembered he broke his right hand before the Tyson fight and could hardly use it during that fight still giving prime Tyson problems for 12 rounds.
Against Hide he was breathing heavily in the first round which was a sign that he was obviously still on drugs.
I completely agree. Tucker had tons of talent but screwed around for a couple years after the unfortuanate loss to tyson when he was in his prime- a fight that he was never in trouble, despite a broken hand. More than likely had Tucker not broken his hand, Tyson would have only been a notable but short lived blip on the heavy weight division. It would be years before Tyson would fight a fighter of Tony Tucker's caliber. That figher would be Douglas, a man Tucker TKOd 4 years earlier.
Tucker also had financial and management problems before the Tyson fight. It was rumoured he only received a fraction of his purse of $1.2 million after the fight, as a result he became disillusioned with boxing. Don King found him down and out in California two and half years after the Tyson fight.
Unfortunately and undeservedly, Tucker was a very highly under-rated boxer.
Tucker could have been great but he would never have beaten a prime Tyson. His best punch was the left jab and he was OUTJABBED by the much smaller shorter reach Tyson. He hit Tyson harder than anyone else ever did at that point with his right uppercut, and Tyson walked right through it. That's what broke his hand too.
Every boxer gets stopped in his tracks. Tyson actually weaved into that uppercut, yet it still didn't even drive him backwards. Just stopped in his tracks for a second and he was on his ass immediately. That punch is very overrated. You'd think Tyson was almost KO'd if you look at what people say about it LMAO
tony tucker had got some guts to be able to stand up after being hit by the lewis right hand. i agree with some of yoy saying that had he been a few years younger he would've given lennox more problems. in this fight you could see that tucker had success getting on the inside and throwing combinations.
LOL funny how LL fans forget that Tucke was way past it by the time this fight came off and Lewis could NOT ko him. Something which Hide did with ease.
man there's no round 7 what's fuckin' happening with the 7 round, where is it ?...

That 8th round is one of my all-time favorites, up there with the 15th of Holmes-Norton and the 10th of Holyfield-Bowe 1.

You can tell from the tone of the announcers (Glenn Mcrory esp) that the fight was dull.

yeah you are right, I was little off, too bad that fight (Tucker/Douglas) is no longer on youtube, it was pretty competative.

Tucker got on drug?would you please tell me since when and till when? Before he fighting with Mike?
ba580702 2 years ago
To answer your question ba580702:
Tucker became addicted after the Tyson fight and was found by Don King in the streets in a ballooned state (weighing over 20 stones).
After losing to Lennox Lewis; he resorted to the use of drugs to combat his depression. As a result of drugs he is partially blind in one eye.
Hope this helps. Peace.
