Also you notice the reason the engine is so clean is because the owner did regular flushes with a product they call neutra in the video. Amsoil has a superior detergent package and only use premium synthetic base stocks that don't break down under high heat conditions, Which eliminate the need for constant flushing even after being used for 25,000 miles before changing it.
I went to the site as you requested. I found it very vague in terms of technical information as far as someone educated in this field would understand. But I found the MSDS sheets interesting. @wootness3000 We know. Good catch. Not many have caught that, but the YouTube community is pretty good. Thanks for your comment. Jay Shields, Pres. of Schaeffer.
I have used Schaeffer in a 97 Chevy 1500. I have 426,000 miles doing 1/yr oil changes and oil analysis 2x per year. Last year I had over 42,000 miles on the oil. I plan on tearing down and filming for uTube.
slickstuff. would like to do visit when you tear down the engine and also film. if you don't mind please contact schaeffer tech department at 18003259962
That is a SOHC motor, not a DOHC. There is only a single cam per bank (two cams total), hence it is a Single Over Head Cam Engine. A Double Over Head Cam engine would have two cams per bank (4 cams total).
ikester - Carbon is a by product of unburnt fuel. as stated in the video a fuel additive was also used in this engine the fuel additive provided a more stitcheometric (complete) burn of the fuel that greatly reduces the amount of carbon left after the compression stroke of the engine. this engine has all the documentation of maintenance and the millage is acurate which leaves me to think you are not a mechanic nor a certified lubrication specialist
ikester7579 - engine sludge and varnish deposits are cause by oxidation and breakdown of poor quaolity unstable oils which is poorly refined and inadequatly treated with proper additives such as detergents and antioxedents. Schaeffers is a heavy detergent type oil that keeps insolouble contamination in dispersion so that insoluble matter won't emulsify and form sludge or varnish deposits. There is also a soluable moly that protects metal surfaces from varnish to adhere too.
I'd seen a 4.6L for sale out of a police vic with over 400,000 miles. It wasn't being sold as a core for rebuilding either, but as a running engine to be placed into another Ford car or truck.
check out my car domain site to see my 78 Bronco that had the motor torn down and rebuilt. 315k and the rotating assembly was in incredible shape. Rings, cylinders walls, everything. The only reason it had to be rebuilt was due to a cracked block from overheating.
I also noticed towards the end of the video, when they show the pistons. The piston held in he guys hand is much cleaner than every other piston laying on the table. The carbon left on top of the piston has nothing to do with the oil. But there was less carbon on that piston than I have ever seen on a high millege engine. Which leaves me to think the engine does not have the millege claimed.
@ikester7579 actually it has been proven that the pistons on these high milage vehicles using schaeffers products do come out that clean your wrong sr
Are these tests done by independent labs like Lubrizol? You want to impress me. have you oil run through the tests Lubrizol would put them through. Google it. It's a one sided test when the same side films it, interviews it, does the tear down, etc... Now do you really think that adds up to non-bias results? Get lubrizol to due the tests, show the results, and also have an oil analysis done on the oil used in the tests. This won't happen for a reason. Which proves my point.
There is also what is alled chemical wear.. The cam shaft is what gets the worst of this because when te engine cools down. Parts in it sweat like a glass of ice tea, The acidity of the oil caused by unburnt fuel, mixed with the moisture from the sweating. Makes hydrochloric acid which raises the acidity of the oil. And because the cam shaft is exposed it's going to get some chemical erosion. Some oils it's worse than others. But zero erosion at 500,000 miles? Nothing stops chemical wear.
I hve taken 3 courses in lubrication and filtration. And have torn down a few engines. It does not matter what you use, there is always going to be a layer of varnish on the heads because the heads get real hot. Sludge is the oils inability to keep the dirt suspended so that the filter can filter it. So varnish is normal. But I could tell that the heads were wiped down and varnish removed. Which also means any sludge was removed as well. So it leaves the oil in question.
Then you don't know much about how fuel additives work. Only the top ring gets enough of the fuel additive to make any difference. The rings below get so little, the sludge build is more so than the additive. For the additive to get to the lower rings, the engine would have to have a bunch of blow by (worn out).
Example: A 1/10 micon filter cannot keep the pistons that clean. And that is small enough to remove moisture from the oil. A jet engine only requires a 7 micron filter.
My grandad had a 89 Ford Taurus and it was the 3.0L had over 200,000km on it. Ran great......no oil usage and also passed the e-tests like a new car even when the oil was jet black.
i have torn down many and the only thing i have seen is if thy drive allot on the highway long trips they will stay very clean but if it is a in town driver were it is allot read light's all day long they will sludge up with any oil
and i know allot of drivers that get 300k to 500k out of a car with 3k to 5k oil change but the main thing is driving habit
use any good brand oil and change every 3k to 5k and you don,t treat like crap and it will last
Nice Sales pitch. Change your oil every 1500 tp 3000 miles if you are worried about varnish in the engine. Thats why oil has detergents in it is to keep the contaminants suspended and keep the internals clean. No mystery here
your right, DOHC refers to 2 cams over 1 bank or Set of cylinders, This engine was a SOHC or sincle cam over a set a cyclinders, controlling both exhaust and intake valves on the same Cam shaft
My grandpa had a Tauras that he had to change the motor in every year or two, only Ford motors I've had bad experiences with. On the other hand, their build quality is utter shit. My uncle has a ranch in NM, and he bent driveshafts/axles often, just in normal use.
Interesting. Our expedition has seen pretty heavy use (including towing a jeep 500 miles) and it is still in excellent condition. Interior quality is excellent, all interior and exterior panels fit perfectly, feel great, and the powertrain is nearly flawless (Ignition coils)
@GEARHEADGUY92 just like any engine they can fail its a hit or miss type thing not to diss on ford but i have use many diffrent types of engines and ford has broke down on me just like a dodge weather treated poorly or great
I can tell U this oil is better by far than royal purple and all teh other synthetics on the market. I can't comment on amsoil cause its to expensive for me, I got this stuff $5 qt and it has made my engines silent, Used to have lifter tick now gone with this stuff, Sounds like new and better MPG increased oil pressure, This is the only oil I will ever buy from here on out, And this is the oldest oil company in the world. I trust experience since 1839.
what is oil pressure? oil pressure is resistance to flow. when its 20 below zero outside i would want the oil that flows the easiest and fastest to the top of the engine lubricating all the components. 75-90 percent of engine wear comes from initial startup? with AMSOIL having a slightly lower oil pressure reading this means that it is flowing alot easier. schaeffers is a good oil and if it wasnt for amsoil id be running schaeffers oil but amsoil quietted my lifters and im a believer!
amsoil is more expensive eh? right now amsoil 5w30 is 8.90 per quart and a filter averages 16 dollars. so in a 6-quart chevy 5.7 liter thats $69.40 and that lasts 25,000 miles or one year....to me that sounds like the cheapest way to go to me
Amsoil is not for me; SuperTech full synthetic, Carquest full synthetic, even Quaker State synthetics are good enough. But then again, I'll wait till later to use full synthetics, not much different than petroleum except longer oil change intervals. IMHO
@jeremysgonenorth they did a test with amsoil to schaffers and other synthetics it was i think a 4 mile race and the only pistons that came out clean were schaeffers amsoil one was corroted
Send the test results to Amsoil. If they are not done by an independent testing facility that is willing to put their results in writing and stand behind them. Then it's considered slander of the companies name. And because of that. Amsoil can sue. That is why you use independent testing to prove your products. Anything else shows it's a shame. Because companies like Lubrizol have already set up the standards for this type of testing. And they don't fudge results.
Thats not really that impressive, people dont realize how well built just about EVERY motor is these days, no one drives them long enough to find out how long that "engine" will turn and turn away, vehicles get sold too soon, and then the next owner treats it worse then the first, and then its sold again and so on, and eventually they get to the point to where people are trying to ruin them on purpose, we've seen the videos,
It all depends on how it was taken care of from day one you buy a car with 100,000 miles on and try good oil and expect longevity your an asshole all cabs and any highmile drivers get tons of miles just with useing conventional oil synthetic only makes it even better
im not impressed whatsoever. they stated they changed the oil every 5-8,000 miles. amsoil has information on a mack engine that was torn down that had over 600,000 mies on the engine and 409,000 MILES ON THE SAME OIL! even with 409,000 on the same oil, all of the components were clean as a whistle and could be reassembled and back to excellent running condition on the old parts! AMSOIL has recommended 25,000 mile/ 1 year drain intervals since 1972! i'm still waiting on shaeffers to do it!
Diesel engines act like a detergent, Why do you think they have engine flushes for gas engines which is nothing more than diesel? Diesel internally run cleaner naturally.
They dont tell you redline uses group V base stocks wich is better then group IV base stocks paos in amsoil. Also the extra zinc used in amsoil is bad for catalytic converters. Its all about them base stocks.
My '88 Ranger 2.9L went 273,000 HARD miles on good 'ol Valvoline 10W30. Our 2000 Explorer 5.0 currently has 243,000 original miles on Valvoline 5W30. Considering synthetics like Schaeffers and Amsoil are 100X better than conventional oil, this is EASILY feasible. If you ever worked in a machine shop you'd know that FORD still has the best quality block of the Big 3. More nickel % than the other two which attributes to less wear.
True, but synthetic oil provides substantial overhead over conventional.
There's increased reserve alkalinity, which allows the oil to resist impurities that could make it corrosive, extending the change interval.
It's also more stable under a wider range of temperatures; it will flow when it's cold for less wear on cold starts and has a higher burning point when it gets real hot, resisting sludging. This allows the oil to better maintain its rated lubricity in extreme conditions.
And the reason why the mechanic said "double overhead cams" may be because there are two cams when you count each one from both cylinder banks and he merely stated it as DOHC on that basis.
If this V8 were DOHC, there would be a total of four camshafts, two for each cylinder bank, with each cylinder having three or four valves.
But this engine is SOHC; there's only one camshaft per bank of cylinders and only two valves per cylinder.
Sorry "dad" but I highly doubt he'll be pulling a DOHC cobra motor from an E150; and yes I am aware that there are DOHC versions of the 4.6; but I fail to see how your comment relates to this video..
The engine in the video came from a Ford Econoline or a Club Wagon (the E-series are full-sized vans on a truck platform).
I don't believe Ford ever made a DOHC Cobra variant available for this vehicle, and for good reason; why would you want to?
What purpose would it serve to put a modified engine designed for speedy performance in a utility van/passenger bus where reliability and the use of regular fuel would be preferrable?
At 03:23 he states it is a double over head cam. That would be incorrect. This engine is a single over head cam. If it were DOHC, it would have two cams per head, for a total of four cams. DOHC 4.6's cam in Mustang Cobra's and Lincolns and stuff like that, not vans.
Regardless, that is pretty impressive how clean that thing is.
Ford, Chevy and Dodge have all built engines with the cam in the center of the block. This 4.6 is a modular engine, and not of the "double overhead cam" variety of modular engines.
I might buy the oil a sponsorship would be nice.... His nails in the video are pretty gnarly , maybe he should get some creme for that and wear gloves for now on

I have used Schaeffer in a 97 Chevy 1500. I have 426,000 miles doing 1/yr oil changes and oil analysis 2x per year. Last year I had over 42,000 miles on the oil. I plan on tearing down and filming for uTube.
slickstuff68 2 years ago
slickstuff. would like to do visit when you tear down the engine and also film. if you don't mind please contact schaeffer tech department at 18003259962
06Duce49 2 years ago
That is a SOHC motor, not a DOHC. There is only a single cam per bank (two cams total), hence it is a Single Over Head Cam Engine. A Double Over Head Cam engine would have two cams per bank (4 cams total).

It's a Shaeffer's fuel additive.
dsmith308 2 years ago
ikester - Carbon is a by product of unburnt fuel. as stated in the video a fuel additive was also used in this engine the fuel additive provided a more stitcheometric (complete) burn of the fuel that greatly reduces the amount of carbon left after the compression stroke of the engine. this engine has all the documentation of maintenance and the millage is acurate which leaves me to think you are not a mechanic nor a certified lubrication specialist
06Duce49 2 years ago 2
ikester7579 - engine sludge and varnish deposits are cause by oxidation and breakdown of poor quaolity unstable oils which is poorly refined and inadequatly treated with proper additives such as detergents and antioxedents.

78SilverBronco 2 years ago
I also noticed towards the end of the video, when they show the pistons. The piston held in he guys hand is much cleaner than every other piston laying on the table. The carbon left on top of the piston has nothing to do with the oil. But there was less carbon on that piston than I have ever seen on a high millege engine. Which leaves me to think the engine does not have the millege claimed.
ikester7579 2 years ago
@ikester7579 actually it has been proven that the pistons on these high milage vehicles using schaeffers products do come out that clean your wrong sr

@HarmonyStar22
Which proves my point.
ikester7579 1 year ago
There is also what is alled chemical wear.. The cam shaft is what gets the worst of this because when te engine cools down. Parts in it sweat like a glass of ice tea, The acidity of the oil caused by unburnt fuel, mixed with the moisture from the sweating. Makes hydrochloric acid which raises the acidity of the oil. And because the cam shaft is exposed it's going to get some chemical erosion. Some oils it's worse than others. But zero erosion at 500,000 miles? Nothing stops chemical wear.
ikester7579 2 years ago
I hve taken 3 courses in lubrication and filtration. And have torn down a few engines. It does not matter what you use, there is always going to be a layer of varnish on the heads because the heads get real hot. Sludge is the oils inability to keep the dirt suspended so that the filter can filter it. So varnish is normal. But I could tell that the heads were wiped down and varnish removed. Which also means any sludge was removed as well. So it leaves the oil in question.
ikester7579 2 years ago
@ikester7579 what about the fuel addivitve that cleans those pistons? wouldnt they then have no sludge.. my thoughts YES they would be clean
HarmonyStar22 1 year ago
@HarmonyStar22
A jet engine only requires a 7 micron filter.

i have torn down many and the only thing i have seen is if thy drive allot on the highway long trips they will stay very clean but if it is a in town driver were it is allot read light's all day long they will sludge up with any oil
and i know allot of drivers that get 300k to 500k out of a car with 3k to 5k oil change but the main thing is driving habit
use any good brand oil and change every 3k to 5k and you don,t treat like crap and it will last

Nice Sales pitch. Change your oil every 1500 tp 3000 miles if you are worried about varnish in the engine. Thats why oil has detergents in it is to keep the contaminants suspended and keep the internals clean. No mystery here
btownmxer 2 years ago
your right, DOHC refers to 2 cams over 1 bank or Set of cylinders, This engine was a SOHC or sincle cam over a set a cyclinders, controlling both exhaust and intake valves on the same Cam shaft

I trust experience since 1839.
jeremysgonenorth 3 years ago
what is oil pressure? oil pressure is resistance to flow. when its 20 below zero outside i would want the oil that flows the easiest and fastest to the top of the engine lubricating all the components. 75-90 percent of engine wear comes from initial startup? with AMSOIL having a slightly lower oil pressure reading this means that it is flowing alot easier. schaeffers is a good oil and if it wasnt for amsoil id be running schaeffers oil but amsoil quietted my lifters and im a believer!
durhamax 3 years ago
amsoil is more expensive eh? right now amsoil 5w30 is 8.90 per quart and a filter averages 16 dollars. so in a 6-quart chevy 5.7 liter thats $69.40 and that lasts 25,000 miles or one year....to me that sounds like the cheapest way to go to me
durhamax 3 years ago
Amsoil is not for me; SuperTech full synthetic, Carquest full synthetic, even Quaker State synthetics are good enough. But then again, I'll wait till later to use full synthetics, not much different than petroleum except longer oil change intervals. IMHO
lordbemylight 2 years ago
@jeremysgonenorth they did a test with amsoil to schaffers and other synthetics it was i think a 4 mile race and the only pistons that came out clean were schaeffers amsoil one was corroted
HarmonyStar22 1 year ago
@HarmonyStar22
And they don't fudge results.
ikester7579 1 year ago
Thats not really that impressive, people dont realize how well built just about EVERY motor is these days, no one drives them long enough to find out how long that "engine" will turn and turn away, vehicles get sold too soon, and then the next owner treats it worse then the first, and then its sold again and so on, and eventually they get to the point to where people are trying to ruin them on purpose, we've seen the videos,
Zeroto90 3 years ago 2
@Zeroto90 yeah, but these engines are known for lasting longer than most. There harder to kill. The police likes this engine for a reason.
NitroGadvRules 1 year ago
It all depends on how it was taken care of from day one you buy a car with 100,000 miles on and try good oil and expect longevity your an asshole all cabs and any highmile drivers get tons of miles just with useing conventional oil synthetic only makes it even better
giovanigta 3 years ago
im not impressed whatsoever. they stated they changed the oil every 5-8,000 miles. amsoil has information on a mack engine that was torn down that had over 600,000 mies on the engine and 409,000 MILES ON THE SAME OIL! even with 409,000 on the same oil, all of the components were clean as a whistle and could be reassembled and back to excellent running condition on the old parts! AMSOIL has recommended 25,000 mile/ 1 year drain intervals since 1972! i'm still waiting on shaeffers to do it!
durhamax 3 years ago
Diesel engines act like a detergent, Why do you think they have engine flushes for gas engines which is nothing more than diesel? Diesel internally run cleaner naturally.
jeremysgonenorth 3 years ago
u have no idea what your talking about!
Diesel engines run much dirtier than gasoline engines!
Why do u think they have to use strong detergents in Diesel oils?!
marek0086 3 years ago
Then why in the hell do they have engine flush bottles which is diesel? The shit U put in your engine and run 10 minutes before an oil change?
jeremysgonenorth 3 years ago
Because stupid people will buy anything if they think it will make their engine run longer.
LookItsRiceCake 3 years ago
They dont tell you redline uses group V base stocks wich is better then group IV base stocks paos in amsoil. Also the extra zinc used in amsoil is bad for catalytic converters. Its all about them base stocks.
jayguy173 3 years ago
My '88 Ranger 2.9L went 273,000 HARD miles on good 'ol Valvoline 10W30. Our 2000 Explorer 5.0 currently has 243,000 original miles on Valvoline 5W30. Considering synthetics like Schaeffers and Amsoil are 100X better than conventional oil, this is EASILY feasible. If you ever worked in a machine shop you'd know that FORD still has the best quality block of the Big 3. More nickel % than the other two which attributes to less wear.
35Remmy 3 years ago
BULLSHIT!!!!
sdime406 3 years ago 2
I don't want to rain on their parade, but any good quality oil and a well maintained engine will show the SAME THING.
jimmybrite 3 years ago 2
True, but synthetic oil provides substantial overhead over conventional.
There's increased reserve alkalinity, which allows the oil to resist impurities that could make it corrosive, extending the change interval.
It's also more stable under a wider range of temperatures; it will flow when it's cold for less wear on cold starts and has a higher burning point when it gets real hot, resisting sludging. This allows the oil to better maintain its rated lubricity in extreme conditions.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
And the reason why the mechanic said "double overhead cams" may be because there are two cams when you count each one from both cylinder banks and he merely stated it as DOHC on that basis.
If this V8 were DOHC, there would be a total of four camshafts, two for each cylinder bank, with each cylinder having three or four valves.
But this engine is SOHC; there's only one camshaft per bank of cylinders and only two valves per cylinder.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
only if ford didnt suck... and kept that same 4.6 on all of their vehicles.
SRZsmack 3 years ago
The 4.6 is starting to get the reputation of being a long lasting engine now that the miles are adding up on older 4.6's
rompn4x 3 years ago 2
EINNNN! wrong! DOHC motors have two cams per head not one... 4.6s are SOHC.....
abzdefg321123 3 years ago
The 4.6L Cobra motor is DOHC, son.
FixFalcon 3 years ago
Sorry "dad" but I highly doubt he'll be pulling a DOHC cobra motor from an E150; and yes I am aware that there are DOHC versions of the 4.6; but I fail to see how your comment relates to this video..
abzdefg321123 3 years ago
And that relates to this video, how?
The engine in the video came from a Ford Econoline or a Club Wagon (the E-series are full-sized vans on a truck platform).
I don't believe Ford ever made a DOHC Cobra variant available for this vehicle, and for good reason; why would you want to?
What purpose would it serve to put a modified engine designed for speedy performance in a utility van/passenger bus where reliability and the use of regular fuel would be preferrable?
Watcher3223 3 years ago
I use RP but I am going to give this a try..Sound like good shit and since its america's oldest company I am sold!
jeremy34769 3 years ago
an e150 is a van. that is very good for an engine near 500k
bradmann85 3 years ago
At 03:23 he states it is a double over head cam. That would be incorrect. This engine is a single over head cam. If it were DOHC, it would have two cams per head, for a total of four cams. DOHC 4.6's cam in Mustang Cobra's and Lincolns and stuff like that, not vans.
Regardless, that is pretty impressive how clean that thing is.
MavDude 4 years ago
he probably ment compared to an engine that has the cam in the center of the engine such as ive seen on cheavy engines.
bradmann85 3 years ago
Ford, Chevy and Dodge have all built engines with the cam in the center of the block. This 4.6 is a modular engine, and not of the "double overhead cam" variety of modular engines.
MavDude 3 years ago
