I think its different for everyone.. for me i usually sit down at the keyboard ..or with tom on guitar .. and come up with chords and then think of a melody that would fit and then lyrics from there..

Its just trying out different things i think .. like different lyrics that could fit with a melody and then try others?

I'd recommend sitting down with another singer/musician and write with them cos i always find that easier! :):)
