What a talent - don't forget the TV series stuff he also did. This takes me back to childhood (I am now 48). Looking back it was pretty lame as a TV series - but that music definately stands the test of time. Quite a haunting piece. Brilliant.
In my opinion "The Lion in Winter" is his best score for which he also won an Academy Award. Very haunting and powerful score. Also "Dances with Wolves" is very epic. His music never gets old.
It is impossible to think of the James Bond films without also thinking of John Barry's thrilling and majestic scores to many of them. Barry was able to craft that unmistakable "Bond" sound and feel, in the process creating the perfect atmosphere to complement the exotic locales and intriguing characters which Ian Fleming's novels required.
Movie composers nowadays can be considered music schlubs because they can't seem to write anything more than two extra-loud chords. Beautiful melodies??? Get real, music schools don't teach how to write those. Imbeciles with long hair endlessly twanging electric guitars...thats modern America and modern American music.
will have to agree with that statement. Nothing but trash out there in the UNited States-then these untalented so called musicians have the nerve to steal from past musicians and call it sampling
I was able to go to John Barry's Memorial Concert at the Albert Hall last night. What a wonderful legacy he has left for us to enjoy- the music is thrilling, emotional and beautiful. Thank you, Mr Barry. Rest in peace.
The fact that his Complete Greatest Hits Collection has nearly 60 pieces of Music is a real testament to his talent. If a had to choose only a few favorites, they would probably be 'Out of Africa', 'Somewhere in Time', 'Dances with Wolves', and his little-known - but exquisitely beautiful - 'Moviola' theme. Calling them extraordinary is almost an understatement !
My all time favourite was the theme to Midnight Cowboy the harmonica playing was brilliantly haunting in a way that made me cry absolutely perfect for the content of the film you will live on through your music John Thanks for wonderful memories ......
You saved the BEST for last! Somewhere in Time was not a very popular movie but it has a growing following. I challenge anyone to watch the end without bawling your eyes out. It just cant be done.
@Texasfilly101 The music of John Barry absolutley puts chills down the spine. The Bond themes alone have an immediate flavor, one of the greatest of all time. His music changed my life as well.
@tkmariner Didn't ah-ha do the theme for that bond movie? Of course John Barry did most of the songs, but mostly based on the theme song! Though the theme song was based on earlier bond themes -> John Barry.
beyond genius, if I could have just been the one to write any one piece of his vast musical catalog, I would died a happy man. Sorry to nitpick, but "The Black Hole" far,far outshines "The Specialist" and several others on this list. The movie was elevated just by having JB's fantastic score to give it a very creepy and scary setting.
John Barry is now in the company of such great maestros with the likes of Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa, Alfred Newman, and many, many others... The world of film music has lost another brilliant musical voice...
undoubtedly the greatest film composer of all time. I can remember listening to James Bond when I was 8. Even if the films were bad, his music was always spectacular.
elyannia: beautifully written I echo your thoughts of John Barry and his passing. Compassion goes out to his family and our gratitude to them also for sharing such a talented man's thoughts and creations wth all of us. I join all of you in conveying and sharing affectionate feelings for such a clever man. He will be so sadly missed. jean
An incredible loss to the music industry. No one put love to music better than John Barry. Making love w/the LOML to his Somewhere in Time CD years ago, brought so much more emotion to it all. I can't hear a JB love theme w/o great emotion since then.
Mary, Queen of Scots is a classic as well. Thought that was supposed to be made into an entire CD at one point. I have looked, but have not seen it anywhere. Raw soul penetrating, haunting.
When I was 8 years old, my father gave me my first soundtrack: GOLDFINGER. My love affair with Film Scores began perfectly....as John Barry has been my favorite composer (by far) for 47 years now. His scores have so much HEART and SOUL. I read a quote by Jerry Goldsmith (a few years ago, before he passed) that if HE were to hire a composer, he would choose John Barry. I am grateful to Mr. Barry for the thousands of hours that I have spent listening to his extraordinary music.
What a terrific loss to those of us who loved his scores so much. "Enigma" is one of my favorite films, and a recent favorite score of Barry's... and the Bond series is unimagineable without his talents. He will be sorely missed....
Mr. Barry wrote the theme music for a tv movie in 1975 titled Love Among The Ruins starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Katharine Hepburn. The song is beyond brilliant. I cannot believe this tv movie is not out on dvd. I defy anyone who hears it not to be touched deeply. What a musical genius and icon. RIP Mr. Barry.
A true genius, up there with the greats of John Williams and the late Jerry Goldsmith. Why hollywood ignore Barry in his later years was completely bizarre, Barry was as good as they got.
So sad to hear about John Barry passing away last week. I know he'd retired from film music years ago due to disatisfaction with the working conditions and the general negative attitude towards film music in the film industry. Like Goldsmith and other composers, his music will be kept in catalogue and it's quite a legacy to leave behind.
Along with Nino Rota,Ennio Morricone and Bernard Hermann,Mr.Barry,in my opinion,is among those four film music composers, who are the greatest of the past 50 years. Barry had a great gift for melody, arrangement and orchestration.A superb talent who will be deeply missed.Riposa in pace,Signore Barry.
John Barry Prendergast... Maybe the greatest composer of music of the late 20th century...and who just happened to compose film scores for the maybe the world's greatest art form.
John Barry... rest in peace, you have left great pieces of love and work behind, your music will always be cherished by people and your soul will remain here, in the core of your artistic heart that keeps beating in the music that you left behind, each note pulsating with the emotions that remain in the compositions that you gifted for eternity, like seeds that grow precious each day, blooming into fadeless beauty, timeless and pure, ineffable and eternal... thank you.

He had such a distinct sound. the music just swelled with emotion at certain parts emulating the film. He will always be remembered for the James Bond films, but he worked on such classics like Dances with Wolves, Somewhere in Time, etc. RIP,
It's impossible to imagine any of these films w/out their soundtracks -- as crucial as the sets, the script, the actors, the costumes, the director, etc. And unlike all of those, the music can stand on its own. RIP Maestro. (HarperLee55)
:( RIP....John Barry composed the most lush, romantic, beautiful scores for film ever. My favorite are Out of Africa, A High Road to China, Dances with Wolves, Somewhere in Time, Scarlett Letter, Born Free and his best Bond was On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He is one of my favorite three film composers along with Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota.
Several years ago I was in Paris and wandered into one of my fave churches (Eglise St Roch, 1ier) and there was a concert of amazing music including the main theme from "Out of Africa." John Barry composed so many stunning and memorable scores... Sir, you will be missed.

I wish John Barry could have composed music and lived forever. I don't think alot of people realize the magnitude of the talent we lost today. His music shall always inspire me. RIP Maestro Barry:)
Today was the first time I ever cried for the passing of someone involved with show business. I have been a fan of John Barry since the age of 10 when I saw my first James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". I loved his scores for "Somewhere In Time" - "Dances With Wolves" and "The Deep. There are other fantastic composers... but only one John Barry. I will never forget you.
Mr Barry, thankyou ever so much for your wonderful creations. Your music and talent has set the standard. May you rest peacefully aware of the fact that your music will bring joy to many more people in years to come. A very sad day but a blessing to know i was alive and lucky enough to experience your wonderful music.
Thankyou ever so much and good luck in the next life.
We lost the great composer John Barry yesterday. I wish he knew his beautiful Dances with Wolves score sustained me when deployed overseas, missing the birth of my youngest son. May he Rest in Peace.
