Try 94 mass% ammonium nitrate with 6 mass% diesel fuel, get a good blasting cap (not a weak one) and get your hands on some dynamite (creating this yourself is *highly* dangerous). Use the blasting cap in the dynamite and the dynamite as a secondary explosive to ignite the ANFO.

Make sure you use uniform mixing for optimal explosive power. Et viola.

you forgot to add allways wrap a coat of nails or broken glass arround the outer layer of the pipe bomb.

The explosion isnt what does the damage its the shrapnel from the pvc/metal pipe.

Adding a coat of nails or a brittle yet sharp material will cause it to be twice as effective.

Yes, that's basicly it. In order to make ANFO even more powerful, use nitromethane, which is widely available. However, do *not* create dynamite yourself, unless you would like to run the risk of losing a limb. Nitroglycerin is *highly* instable.

Well, whether to use ANFO or ANNM depends on the purpose one wishes to use these explosives for. In general, ANFO is better suited for the main charge, one can use ANNM as a booster (in the mass-percentages you cited). Adding aluminum won't do a lot, according to Katsabanis et al. (2009), it may even reduce the velocity of detonation. Also there's the risk of aluminum dust explosions. Google it for details.

You place the powder inside the pipe in a plastic bag and use axle grease to lube the threading on the pipe, fill it 3/4 of the way up, place fuse and any other nails/tacks/ball bearings inside. GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE. Or, wire it up with a remote detonator made from an R/C car.
