don't see the point... ive got the one without assist and the ball and detent tension helps the thumb stud snap the blade out with a minor flick of the thumb foward- super fast.

I agree. I have the original covert and covert mini and they open just as fast.

I think it makes it easier to open with a small knife like this. Small knives can be a pain opening completely with thumb studs, and you can end up cutting yourself bad if your thumb slips.
