It was a military strategy. Something you must be unfamiliar with. They knew the consequences that would ensue, but it was either that or send more American soldiers & Marines to die. And it was one time in history, it hasn't happened since.

Between kamikaze attacks & the islands held by the Japanese that we felt would need to be liberated, the military felt that island hopping & ultimately detonating the atomic bomb would save many more American lives, money & time. Upon seeing the horrific effects of the atomic bomb, the U.S. government openly regretted having to use such methods & have not used any form since. In any war, there will be casualties & civilians fall into that category. However, do not make it sound as if we were or are butchers. We can't properly fight the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq because of the red tape involved in avoiding civilian casualties & because if we kill one, we are murderers. Its war. Its ugly. People die.
