It really is disappointing that Sam couldn't compete to her full ability. I honestly believe she could have succeeded greatly, I could see her medaling on a lot of events and being one of America's Sweetheart, like Shawn kind of became.
MARY LOU RETTON IS SUCH A BITCH!!! WHO CARES THAT CHINESE ARE COMMUNISTS??? THEY ARE GOING TO BE JUDGED BY THE SAME OLYMPIC STANDARDS, THE PLACE OF COMPETITION HAS NO INFLUENCE ON HOW THE GYMNASTS WILL BE JUDGED!!!
@1989DaVinci I don't think she meant it that way, communist countries naturally have tough gymnasts because they train their kids at all costs there's a toughness and control to communist countries that America and other countries just don't have. It can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it
I met all the usa team, sam pezeck is my fav and I got a photo with her but I think shes could be the best and it is her vid and go her, she goes to a proper school and fits in all her homework. She is great, I love her. Oxx
Does the system work? I say no. Since 1996, we haven't won a team gold, though we could have at least a couple times, had our gymnasts not gotten hurt due to the "system."
all this talk about peaking.... look at miller, amanar, boginskaya, khorkina, chusovitina, etc etc... none of them 'peaked'.... they had elite levels for well over 5 years... all of them....
I'm glad they included that end "blooper" bit! It was great to see Sam and Mary Lou so natural! Sam's great. I wish her body would have allowed her to perform more at the Olympics. She must have been so disappointed! :(
And, yes, props to Mary Lou for saying what everyone else was thinking! China knew they had a chance to win a lot of golds in WAG this year, and the officials were going to and DID give every extra point to China that they could. Most of the judging in Beijing was scandalous!
During the Team Final, yes. The Americans did not deserve to win there. The injuries of Sam and Chellsie really caused the USA problems. They're depth was severely hampered.
However, I'm talking more about the AA and EF, both men and women. Shawn was waaaaay underscored in the AA; I think Nastia deserved to win anyway, but Yang Yilin shouldn't have been nearly as close as she was. Nastia was robbed in the Bars final. There shouldn't have been a tie in the first place.
Jonathan Horton should have won the High Bar final. High Bar is supposed to be the Chinese's men's weakest event, they're scored low on it throughout the competition, and then one of them pulls off the win in the EF?? Slightly suspicious, particularly as his top competition was an American. I can't decide about the Women's FX Final: I haven't been able to find out what Sandra Izbasa's SV was. If it was lower than Shawn's, there's absolutely no way she deserved to win.
And if it was the same but they preferred her artistry to Shawn's (because Shawn's FX is nearly devoid of all artistry) then that gold's should be Nastia's. Her FX is the class of the field, and no one can beat her for artistry. The only way I could understand is if her SV is higher, even if I feel Shawn and Nastia performed better.
Every tenth the judges' could take away from the Americans they did. The judging really soured the Olympics for me, not to mention the age controversy. I'm not even going to start on that, though. I know the Chinese gymnasts' ages were "verified" recently, but I still think the former evidence is irrefutable. After all, the government can fabricate those documents in a wink if they wish. At least the FIG attempted to do something after lolly-gagging about forever.
i agree. if you look at the chinese platform divers, who were 15 and 16 at the games, they look soooo much older than the gymnasts. people have been saying that girls dont age the same way in china that they do in america, but if you look at the divers, its proof that somethings definately false about the gymnasts ages
yah thats what i thought the only chinese gymnast who looked of age was li shan shan and cheng fei why did they look so much older than the other 4 girls?
i think li shan shan looks pretty young too, but she's been around so no doubt she's underaged. Cheng fei is way older than the rest of them, at 20, it's gonna be obvious you're not 16
Sandra did have the highest SV in fact, so I guess she did deserve to win. The HB final for the men was a JOKE, Horton was way better than Zhou. I hated the bars tie breaker becuase the whole point of disregarding the top and bottom scores is to prevent one judge giving a stupidly high score to boost the gymnast's average. So by letting He win they have paved the way for more trouble. Finally, I thought Nastia should've beaten Shawn in the beam - her routine just had that artistic edge I think.
on beam every jugde gave nastia higher marks for execution but shawn had a higher start value so it didnt matter that shawn had a lot of leg seperations and such she won just because she was throwing big tricks didnt matter how well they were done... proof that the system needed changing
Totally! I caoch gymnastics and we were tlking about Shawn recently - she NEVER hits splits in her leaps and yet they are credited on both floor and beam, whereas our level 7 girls wouldn't stand a chance of having the same! Ridiculous. I don't dislike Shawn, but she could barely do splits and it drove me mental. Other power gymnasts such as Peszek or Memmel managed it!
Nastia FTW at nationals - I'm glad she isn't AAing, I wanted her to specialise now so she can win the beam and bars in London!
Unlikely she will be ready since she will almost certainly only do UB/BB/FX at nats. Vault is not her best event so I doubt she woukd want to risk trying it for the first time in major competition. She has said she is still considering AA but might only specialise this year becuase of difficuties getting back into competition shape.
While Shawn doesn't have the greatest difficulity, you can't argue aganist the system without also mentioning Nastia Luiken, who while her bar routine is beautiful and packed with diffficulity her score was seriously inflated well into the 7's start value.
Besides Nastia also had form breaks during Beijing.
Her scores may have been slightly inflated execution wise but certainly not start-value wise. And in comparison to all the SERIOUSLY inflated execution scores of gymnasts with horrible technique and form, I think it's all a wash. Plus Nastia, to me, falls under the category of gymnasts whose occasional form breaks are due to lack of power/body type and cannot (for the most part) be helped (like Bross' knees), as opposed to flexed feet, bad form, and bad technique of other gymnasts.
@liukin95 yeah ITA that the Russians are on an upswing. I think the Chinese will still be in major contention come 2012 - they always peak for the Olympics, even at the cost of the World Championships/other competitions inbetween. I'd love to see the Russians win it all though

her start value (Izbasa) was the highest of all the athletes to perform on FX- thats why in the end she edged out Shawn-
