oliver1950gmpuller. Thats a great sounding little Detroit Diesel, and a beautiful tractor as well. I believe I watched you pull in Henry county last year at the county fair. I think there is a pull in about two weeks and I hope you can make it . There will no doubt be some good competition!!
they dont rev the detroits high. they have twice as many valves as a four stroke which means twice the strokes per rotation, and twice the power of an equivalent 4 stroke per stroke =)
2 strokes have 2 exhaust valves above the cylinder, and use a gear driven blower to force air through the ports and clear the cylinder. they dont use a full compression stroke for this reason which makes them have on average 50% more power than a 4 stroke, while running at the same speed.
Yea bud you might do that with your little 4020, but there was a 4320, a 4430, and all the others behind us in the class that day. You're just another cry baby John Deere puller that can't stand to get beat by an Oliver. It's ok buddy. People like you reinforce my thinking.
no offence, i like the tractor/engine and all, but there is a reason why john deere makes some of the best farm equipment in the world, while oliver does not
John Deere only had two tractors that had a Detroit in them from the factory. They were the 435 which had a 2-53 and the 4-wheel drive 8020 which had the 6-71.
@GMdieselman I have a stock 630 that I pull with 3 detroit olivers, a 99, 1900,1950 and I have beaten them many times, they have also beaten me, so you really dont have to modify a deere or anything else. balance and traction
@atlasrgstr ummm first of all you need to realize that this tractor is only 212 cubic inches, whereas a 4020 is nearly 2 times as large in the engine compartment its simple detroit diesel kicks ass
Why are we cheaters? Just because the big bad Oliver is spankin' up on your 4430's and your 1466's, we get called cheaters? I guess it's because that is only a 212.4 cubic inch four cylinder motor in that tractor. My bad for making your Deere's and Binder's look bad. You should have bought a real tractor.
i'm just sayin' that our john deere's and IH's and olivers are stock in our farm stock class. then theres the 3 or 4 tractors that are all souped up and whip the rest of us guys with shit still on our tires.
That tractor right there is basically stock. All we did was add a turbocharger to even up the playing field with the John Deere's and International's. Now all the JD and IH pullers are getting mad cause an Oliver with a 212.4 cubic four cyclinder is whoopin up on em'.
@richjd630 Yea I have been beat. Everybody loses bub. Can't say I have been beat by a damned ole 630 2 pop John though. Hell everytime we hook against a 2 pop John we put a good 30 to 40 feet on them if not more! Pretty sure you aint touchin' my 1950 with your 630. Oh and I don't talk shit bub, I just tell it how it is. Have fun pullin' your antique sir.
I would get a cage on that and wear a helmet. You might find yourself milk stooling it on your head if something goes wrong. Milk stools have 3 legs and tip over to the forward corners easily for those who have never heard the term. Cool old Oliver.
probably because the 53 series has the highest redline. i agree that 71 and 92 series have more of a moan or in some cases raspy type sound especially in the 8 and 6 cylinder engines.
Actually if you take a look at the crankshaft phasing in a 2 stroke Detroit, the 4 cylinder and an 8 cylinder will sound almost exactly the same. And a 3 cylinder and an in-line 6 will sound identical. You could not tell the difference in sound between a 3-71 and an in-line 6-71. Once you get more than 3 cylinders in a Detroit you will have multiple pistons firing simultaneously.
Detroits are two-stroke cycle, yes, but they do use a Roots-type blower to force exhaust out and air in. It's a bit misleading for Detroit to label their non-turbocharged engines with "NA", but none of the two-strokes are truly naturally aspirated.
I have a couple videos on my channel of a pulling Oliver 1950, too.

that's the same tractor they mow Al Gore's yard with I am sure.

question,
it is difficult to tune the Detroit 4-53? what is the most common way to get more power?

some models have 4 valves per cylinder,ourc3-53 jimmy has the 4 valve per cylinder head

Those GM diesel engines!
They need to really rev. to create power.

Pretty dang good pull for a little 4 pop, sounds like it revs 5 or 6 grand on that launch.
Not quite a full pull it looks like, but close ?
windsors03cobra 3 years ago
just sounds that way. 2 strokes sound like they're revving high because they fire twice as many times per rev.

You would have to modify your john deere to even keep up with a GM diesel!

actually i have. this happens to be a 4 cyl jimmy which has a 4 cyl buzz sound. 6 and 8 cyl jimmy's sound different all together.
