That's actually a 3:1 ratio (16 tooth to 48 tooth), so your engine is actually pulling 6540 RPM! (I hope you know that's a 16 tooth gear on the crank shaft).

The crankshaft has a 20 tooth gear and it turns a 40 tooth gear thats connected to the tachometer. So the tach actually reads half of the engines speed. See the little gear goes around twice for every one time that the big gear makes a full rotation...Class is over, kids please study for next weeks exam!

make a pressurized oil system, may be messy but will do the job just nicely;) and get a flywheel, might turn out perfect.

first of all, this isnt a kit, all engines like this are thought up by individual builders, lego doesnt sell any kits for them. second of all, the only part that may be slowing it down is the little fan on the top wheal, which i doubt makes a difference worth mentioning.

Could a teflon lubricant like Tri-Flow help out with reducing friction? Maybe pick up a few RPM's if that is what you are going for?

it's a piston engine that runs on air pressure. Exact same principle as a steam engine, except it uses compressed air rather than pressurised steam.

If you reduce all the fake engine parts down to just a rotating shaft, you could increase RPM further.

i assume you are using small pneumatic cylinders which consume less air and therefore move faster than bigger ones used in other designs i saw
