Hi. You're amazing! I'm just starting to learn, and I was wondering, it sounds like at about 1:12 in your video when you play E notes they sound higher than they were earlier. I can't seem to get them to sound like yours... maybe I'm wrong and they're not E notes, I'm just seeing your fingers wrong, or are you doing something different when you play them then? Thanks! I really appreciate your awesome tutorial.
The Clarke is a great starter whistle! I tried to learn on a Generation but gave up before I discovered I was blowing too hard. If I'd started with the Clarke, I'd have several more years experience by now. Although I now have a Susato and a Burke, the Clarke is my "go to" whistle. Great tune, Thanks for posting! :) Slainte!! :)
couldnt wait for my first lesson tomorrow and tried to learn this song from your tutorial. got the first few bars quite good after half an hour already. thanks for uploading this video!!!!
you're great! I bought the same whistle and will start lessons in a few days. King of the fairies is one of my all time favourites - hope i'll be able to play it as good as you do very soon!
Very clear demonstration. This is my tune of the moment. I'm playing on the guitar. Don't worry, I won't trash it. the tune is just so allegorical. Doesn't need embelishment.
As an Irish-Pakistani I grew up in a very Irish primary school playing the tin whistle for a few years, am intrigued by your background? Also, great playing hun!
nice tutorial, have you worn the gold off your Clarke yet...Mine is solid black after 3 years....play mostly bluegrass and old time tunes on mine, but everyone thinks you suppose to know every Irish session tune when you pull out the whistle, so I have been learning about about 10 or so tune to placate them...just found your site and enjoy your music..wishing you much success..
Try not to curl up the third, fourth and fifth fingers on your right hand when you are not using them, better to just keep them relaxed, ready for action.
Your tutorial was pretty good. You showed the whole tin whistle and went slow so people could see what you were doing. Which is always a plus when showing others how to play a song.
this is amaing<3 thank you for the video, i was wondering , when you play a tune faster is it easier to hold your fingers closer to the holds or further away??
Hey! I was wondering if you could help me with something, or if you know someone who could help me with this, I'd appreciate it. I've been trying to find sheet music for 2 songs so i could play it on the whistle, but I can't find it, and I'm not good at picking out the notes by ear. The songs are "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" sung by Loreena McKennitt and "Laddie lie near me" sung by Connie Dover. I know they might not be traditional whistle tunes, but I'd like to try. Thank you.
This is a great video, although I'm a brand new tin whistle player (just got it in the mail today), I would love to learn this song, but don't yet know how to read music (will learn with my new "Clarke Tin Whistle" book and cd). Just learned Twinkle little start and london bridge.
My question is, does anyone have this song in tab form instead of music form? Or at least the notes in order of playing to make it easier for me to follow along?
@meltonblackspider I'm sure she's only pulling her fingers away that far so you know what notes she's forming, since this is to show you how to play it.
You are amazing with that penny whistle. You have inspired me to buy one and try to learn it. I play celtic music on the violin. I love the celtic music, and beliefs. Im a Scottish descendant. Thanks for posting.
Hey! Love this song! I've watched this video about 30 times, but I can't figure out how to play the high notes: G, F, B? etc. I know how to play high D (the notation on my tin whistle sheet is wrong). can someone please explain to me or show me how to play them?
thanks very much, been waiting 4 this video for a long time! really big help in learning this song =] have you done any other songs out of interest or is this the only one at this speed?
Your tutorial helped me to really start off with the Tin Whistle again so thanks for that :) .
I recently bought myselfe another tin whistle the same as you have (clarke D). Well, I'm having problems on the 2nd ovtave, especially on the high G and pitch upwards. There I oftenly get screeching sounds halfway trough the tune...
You doesn't seem to have this problem... so is it just me or a matter of practice or is there some kind of trick to?
Keep your breathing strong and steady...don't worry about sounding too loud. The important thing is not to waver, because you need that faster air stream to be able to do the higher octave. It might be a problem with the instrument itself, but clarkes are usually pretty consistent in my experience...
@Lostone99 Patrick, i know it may be a little late in coming, but i bought a whistle from them and had the same problem. I just wrote an e-mail to the distributer and they had me send it back. They sent me another one for free and that one played just fine.
thank you very much this helped a lot! how long did it take you to get that good at this song? so far i cant quite get it to sound like that, but im workin on it :P
It takes time...the more familiar you get with your instrument and the tune, the more naturally those ornaments will come. I've been playing this tune for about three years now...
thanks! yeah, it's actually tough going slow...it's like my fingers forget what's supposed to come next. maybe muscle memory is composed of not just the pattern of movements, but a particular speed it's used to.
did the diamonds on your clarke tin whistle rub off after like the second week you got it? cuz that happened to mine :(

@ScarletMai Learning to read music really doesn't take that long, and once you master it, music will be so much easier. Best of luck!

closer to the holes, but don't worry about it too much, your fingers will do what they need to do naturally.

Don't keep taking your fingers away from the whistle or you will be more likely to get your fingering wrong.

The fingering doesn't change, but you do need to blow faster, and perhaps purse your lips a little.
