In September 1995, four members of "Rainbow", a political party of ethnic Macedonians in Greece were prosecuted by the Greek authorities for allegedly "spreading hatred among the population". The crime? The erection of a bilingual sign (in Greek and Macedonian) of the party's name in front of their headquarters in Florina / Lerin.

Rainbow used the Macedonian language written with the Cyrillic alphabet. Following the erection of the sign, "angry citizens" provoked by the local authorities (the mayor, members of the municipality council, the leadership of the Greek Orthodox Church and several "patriots") under the guilty tolerance of the Greek Police, raided and destroyed the party's office, threatening also the physical well-being of the party members inside it.

Rainbow filed a lawsuit against the assailants and pursued the case through the Greek judicial system. At all levels the case was rejected as unfounded. The matter was than appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg.

In October 2005, the ECHR found Greece guilty of violating the European Convention on Human Rights and ordered it to pay 35 000 € in compensation to Rainbow and its members.
