Dont buy it! Turrets dont turn, just flash and projectiles fly witchever way. The impact effects are ridicolus compared to even old titles as homeworld! There are a lot of research and takes forever to get into the game... Capital ships just dont feel like capital ships, they buzz around as if game speed was cranked way up...
@Torejansson Those are not valid reasons to turn away from Sins. Turret's don't turn that's why you keep them close to your planet for maximum protection against attacks from behind. Long research? well yeah but that's why people like me and other gamers who play games like Rome Total War and Sins, we like the long lasting game, not like C&C, SC, or DOW which tech can be upgraded within 30 mins or less. And capital ships are awesome but I bet your a space junkie so its your opinion. So buy it!
@GenX52 I still play it, I just wish someone had told me about the shortcommings. I ment turrets on ships, the guns point one way, projectiles flying another. I`ve played a bunch of strategy games all the way back to the first DUNE game, all of the total war series, total annihilation, supreme commander, Hagemonia and homeworld lots more. I like deep strategy games, but in my opinion they could have made it a lot better! Look at the impact effects compared to old titles like Homeworld.
shame theres such a crappy registration system, which is vital to update game, and that doesnt recognise my code. What a bullshit system to ruin what seems a good game.
@calumknight1984 yeah i noticed, but i also noticed that they havent added a forum for the game in steam as i wanted to ask if steam users still get registration issues. Or if it runs fine. The very fact that they havent added a steam based forum for the game (pretty much all games on steam have one) kind of suggests to me that there may still be issues, and they dont want forum comments to give the game a bad press.
The real Sins game is to play online multiplayer against human players and without silly AIs on Ironclad Online. Check out the Sins online multiplayer Steam group SinsOnline to learn more about Sins online multiplayer.
I want to buy a space strategy game. Which one would you recommend me between sins of a solar empire and galactic civilizations (I only played master of orion 2 till now and I enjoyed it a lot. I try master of orion 3... and give up within 5 minutes)
I haven't played GC, but like you I played the heck out of master of Orion 2 (still do) and was looking for a "modern competitor" for it - I found it in Sins. It has the same "just a little while longer" pull to it that makes you lose sleep like in the good old days. :) So, while I can't compare GC vs. Sins, I still think it's safe to say you can't go too badly wrong with Sins.
I really want to get Rebellion but I don't have internet to get it. I really wish Ironclad would change it from an only downloadable game to an actual physical launch. Oh well can't do much about it.
99% of all Sins players don't realize that Sins is even better in online multiplayer against human opponents ("the real Sins game"). The AI does some pretty silly and suicidal things, so isn't a very good opponent.
Team games, 4v4 and 5v5, with all human players are much more challenging, more intense, more suspenseful, more interesting, more strategically involved, more satisfying, and more fun.
So, if you have the Diplomacy expansion, definitely log onto Ironclad Online and check it out.
@Whippersnapper7 You need to have the Diplomacy to play online? I have only the first one and I was planning on buying this anyway though because i lost my Cd key lol
"It's really the kind of game where you sit down and it's tuesday afternoon ... and and your next glance at the clock it's still on afternoon ... but suddenleh it's friday."

*Disclaimer: I download it only to test it out before I BUY it, I support piracy in that matter*
It could be classified as an RTS, but I think the reviewer is right for trying to distinguish it from the RTS genre. The popular idea of an RTS is something like Age of Empires, Command & Conquer, etc (which are sort of like real time RPG games on a very large scale). This definitely seems to have more turn-based strategy game elements, despite lacking the "turn based" part, with RTS elements in it on the individual army scale.
Of course, it's still technically an RTS b y definition, but meh.
The expansion, entrechment gives more ship basic bonuses, tec ships are stonger, varsi are deadlier, and advent are quick and fast, especially disiciples
What do I do in this game to be able to build more ships?I just got the game and I am having troubles with this. The enemy always gets me with big numbers and I have like 10 ships and one capital ship.I have resources and money, but nothing to do with it because of the population cap.
the best comparison I can find is that SoaSE is like a body without a soul, it may be a beautiful body aka have incredible game mecanics and is well thought balanced etc etc, BUT it has no soul and yes the game to set the ethalon as far as space based games goes is HOMEWORLD 1, and its not just that it has a campaign, but the story is superbe, is epic in the truest sense of the word, the music is inspiring, the voices are well chosen unlike SoaSE
@aramiris So, what you're saying is that you appreciate the game design of SoaSE but liked the campaign, story and some of the production values of the Homeworld series (in particular the first) better...
Brilliant review, most epic game ever. I think i could just stay with this game for the rest of whats left of my videogame life. Lately for some reason I dont like many games.
I still get my master of orion II disc out occasionally to get my space domination fix. Just recently though, I found Sins on sale for 10 euros at the local market, so I jumped on it. I felt so at home with it from the very beginning, and I can totally relate to what you said about it being still afternoon, only friday. ;) This game has a serious "just a while longer" -factor! Not an RTS, but a Real-time representation of a turn-based strategy game?
That makes no sense, turn based games can easily be real-time too, infact most are, and i wouldn't be too far off by saying ALL single player turn-based games are real-time.
@FireSign27 i don't think he went into enough detail why and thats whats confusing people. i can explain what i think he means:
obviously everything that happens in it is in real time but like in a turn based game u tell a fleet what to do and it does it u don't need to take control of the fleet in battle and micromanage everything the computer works out the result of the battle for u
Wait, is there some sort of option to destroy a taken planet? i assume not if this game is built the way you say. lol now i want this game so bad regardless. i dislike not being rich and all powerful, oh wait, this game can make you feel both of those things! D: must get money
I couldn't agree with this poster more! A wonderful review for a game I admire greatly. Maybe we will see some other game developers try to to 1up this lol
defenses are in tactical slots, and trade ports are in logistical slots, so building too many defenses doesn't effect how many trade ports you can build
@RetartedWaffles I don't know the details, but the game's designed to run on older computers. So if yours was made sometime in this decade, it'll probably work.
This looks amazing but what does it require to run? I can run Sims 3, not SUPER fast, but fast enough though. I think i might get this and Starcraft 2.. I'm no sure if I can't run this I'll just stick with Starcraft 2
thanks for this review. i loved hw, but i'll definitely be checking out this game. besides, what a fucking BADASS name. that's what caught my attention at first. not a big fan of tbs though
"It's really the kind of game where you sit down to play and it's tuesday afternoon and your next glance to the clock it's still afternoon but suddenly it's friday"
I like that fact that a developer was ballsy enough to come out with an extremely macro-centered game. RTS games have fallen into the pitfall that YOU MUST have a healthy mix of micro and macro to make an enduring strategy game, but that is a load of crap. Sins of a Solar Empire is the most unique strategy game I have ever played for the PC, and I have played a lot.
Just beat my first large-scale skirmish match against ten AI's with active diplomacy. It was 27 hours long, (2 hours per day.) and by far one of the best games I've played in a long time.
@xeve21x you my friend are incorrect, neither part of the total war games are RTS, the overworld is not real time for a kick of its turn based therefore not "Real Time" Stratagy and the in battle model is more RTT Real time Tactics than stratagy. Just to clarify, Stratagy is how individual battles are linked as part of a broader military action, Tactics is the actual plan for an individual battle. As for Sins i think the game is billed as RT4X as opposed to RTS.
The largest standard maps have 5 or 6 stars with a couple planets around them.
The real Sins game is, of course, online multiplayer against real human opponents. (Once you know what you are doing, the AI isn't very challenging.) Most online games are played on single star maps with the largest having about 80 gravity wells for 5v5. A few multistar maps are played for 2v2 and 3v3; they would just take too long with 5v5. Note that your average 5v5 only takes 1.5 hours to play.
Your right, however ive been playing against computers, and on small maps with little planets, and 1 star. Havn't tried online yet. This is a addicting game, and i expirement different strategies all the time.
There is plenty of online multiplayer action for this game during North American and European prime time, say between 2 pm and 11 pm U.S. Eastern Standard Time. The player counts could be higher and the game does deserve to have higher online player counts, but it still isn't very difficult to get into a 5v5. However, note that most of the online action is for the Entrenchment expansion now which most players think is better than playing without the expansion.
I wouldn't play it online agaisnt people i do not know. Thats the drawback with all this scope. Its better if used in LAN environments. It comes with a license for two ínstalls BTW. It online matchmaking is possible but i would not recommend it. Play this with your friends.
It's a great game for online multiplayer, including against other people you don't know. There are actually many non-pro, newer players online mixed in with the pros.
It has a learning curve and you have to lose many games and study what the good players do and read about strategy at the discussion forum to become better. It's a lot of fun once you know what you're doing and can hold your own against the experienced players.
AI becomes boring after a while. The real Sins game is online.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hey dude i fucking hated this one game called "EvE" but i hear this and eve are very similar try it out your actually battle against other people its like this i guess :)
Well if you are the ceo of a big pvp corp, i guess they are similar, except the game never ends. And micro is damn important although all your ships are controled by players ;)
could u have a glaxy with lets say 200 stars and have 1000 planets or a combinationw itch enabled over 1000 and then start to play from a single planet?
no, unfortunately. I've heard that Eve is like Sins but you get to command ships personally as well. and build huge commercial empires. and assassinate ppl
I've had this game for quite some time and although it has some good features I found it very tedious and you tend to get bored once you have played it for a while.
The three races are so much alike, with only a few unique features each, that it really cuts down on how long you can have at it.
If you've gotten bored, consider playing it against better competition than the AI. The real Sins game is online multiplayer against human opponents which also involves team play.
Once you have the required technology, you can travel to different stars via the star of your current galaxy in exactly the same way you travel to different planets.
if the pirates are constantly attacking you build up a very large fleet and send them to the pirate base. it is tough but eventually you will defeat them.
well you could just make them attack the other nations by making the other nation look like the bigger prize. remember these pirates wont attack the strongest military nation but the nation with the strongest economy.
REDUCE YOUR SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS sound when you talk and it will be better next time. Also good review, quite informative.

@antisocialfatman its not a rts its a WAR!
cowboybeepbop1 1 year ago
@antisocialfatman the total war series is an RTS so this would also be an RTS
xeve21x 1 year ago
@xeve21x you my friend are incorrect, neither part of the total war games are RTS, the overworld is not real time for a kick of its turn based therefore not "Real Time" Stratagy and the in battle model is more RTT Real time Tactics than stratagy. Just to clarify, Stratagy is how individual battles are linked as part of a broader military action, Tactics is the actual plan for an individual battle. As for Sins i think the game is billed as RT4X as opposed to RTS.

So how many stars are there in a game? Are there hundreds like in Galactic Civ or are there just a few with a bunch of planets around them?
RaynorX 2 years ago
The largest standard maps have 5 or 6 stars with a couple planets around them.
The real Sins game is, of course, online multiplayer against real human opponents. (Once you know what you are doing, the AI isn't very challenging.) Most online games are played on single star maps with the largest having about 80 gravity wells for 5v5. A few multistar maps are played for 2v2 and 3v3; they would just take too long with 5v5. Note that your average 5v5 only takes 1.5 hours to play.

20 mins of battling per hour is fine with me, It's better than having repetitive action because the action is just a reward for ur thinking :D

You will be wasted by scouts. You spam, you die. If you are up against a pro.
Arkanoid1212 2 years ago
Your right, however ive been playing against computers, and on small maps with little planets, and 1 star. Havn't tried online yet. This is a addicting game, and i expirement different strategies all the time.

"Ironclad's online service is simply a pleasure to use."
Yes, it would be, if there were anyone online playing. )-:
MoonIMover 2 years ago
There is plenty of online multiplayer action for this game during North American and European prime time, say between 2 pm and 11 pm U.S. Eastern Standard Time. The player counts could be higher and the game does deserve to have higher online player counts, but it still isn't very difficult to get into a 5v5. However, note that most of the online action is for the Entrenchment expansion now which most players think is better than playing without the expansion.
Whippersnapper7 2 years ago
I wouldn't play it online agaisnt people i do not know. Thats the drawback with all this scope. Its better if used in LAN environments. It comes with a license for two ínstalls BTW. It online matchmaking is possible but i would not recommend it. Play this with your friends.
Arkanoid1212 2 years ago
wow what can those strangers online do to you? Telepathically rape you?
rhun664 2 years ago
leave the game midway, wasting hours of your time
Koolaiddewz 2 years ago
It's a great game for online multiplayer, including against other people you don't know. There are actually many non-pro, newer players online mixed in with the pros.
It has a learning curve and you have to lose many games and study what the good players do and read about strategy at the discussion forum to become better. It's a lot of fun once you know what you're doing and can hold your own against the experienced players.
AI becomes boring after a while. The real Sins game is online.

I have a thing for space games so I will get this one even tho it will take some time to get used to it

Hey dude i fucking hated this one game called "EvE" but i hear this and eve are very similar try it out your actually battle against other people its like this i guess :)
geftargnabl 2 years ago
I play eve, and the only thing that EvE and Sins have in common is that they both are in space. EvE is an mmo.
frozencanadian 2 years ago
Well if you are the ceo of a big pvp corp, i guess they are similar, except the game never ends. And micro is damn important although all your ships are controled by players ;)

How can you not like EVE? Anyway great review this one.

I tried a demo of this but it bored me so I didn't bother trying out the full version. I'll just stick to Master of Orion 2.

this game is wonderful and beautiful, but it does have a 90 degree learning curve.
rafis117 2 years ago
I guess you have never played Eve, have you? :)
ro4ers 2 years ago
Please dont compare games like this, it'll only start flame wars between hardcore fans in the comments of this well-made video.
Quarolet 2 years ago
no, unfortunately. I've heard that Eve is like Sins but you get to command ships personally as well. and build huge commercial empires. and assassinate ppl
rafis117 2 years ago
I've had this game for quite some time and although it has some good features I found it very tedious and you tend to get bored once you have played it for a while.
The three races are so much alike, with only a few unique features each, that it really cuts down on how long you can have at it.
Good game but it could be so much more.
rorylol 2 years ago
If you've gotten bored, consider playing it against better competition than the AI. The real Sins game is online multiplayer against human opponents which also involves team play.

i saved my ally an his extreamly small fleet and mining crew then demolished him and his only planet :)

I see how you travel from planet to planet but how do you travel to the next star system.
Jesse2K12 2 years ago
Once you have the required technology, you can travel to different stars via the star of your current galaxy in exactly the same way you travel to different planets.

if the pirates are constantly attacking you build up a very large fleet and send them to the pirate base. it is tough but eventually you will defeat them.
toonamifreedom97 2 years ago
well you could just make them attack the other nations by making the other nation look like the bigger prize. remember these pirates wont attack the strongest military nation but the nation with the strongest economy.
