I love the history of this violin! The Stradivarius "La Pucelle" it has a carving of Joan of Arc on it's tailpiece. It was never played since it's creation in 1709's beginning of Stradivari's golden period. Until it was sold in 2001. The story of it's owner is what facinates me. Sad story but very interesting. Huguette Clark. Actually Clark County Nevada was named after her father!
@BearMtl: Sorry!!! Maybe I should have said the sound of the Stradivarius is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in my life; and to have the violin played by a master like Ehnes was a privilege and immense treat for me to experience; I didn't word that post right.
@phyllisloewen Are you serious?! You dare compare this brilliant violonist (Ehnes) to one of the worst "fiddle player" in the world? Please...open your ears!
The CD has 33 tracks, including 5 tracks of excerpts of Bruch Scottish Fantasy played with 5 different violins (so you hear the different violin sounds), 3 tracks of excerpts of Harold in Italy played with 3 different violas.
The DVD is 73 minute long, each track precedes with James describing the violin he played and why he picked that particular violin for that particular piece.
I just bought this CD+DVD today and it is awesome! Anyone that plays the violin, or enjoy violin music needs to get yourself the CD+DVD! In my opinion, this is a must have!
I'm ordering 2 more copies at the shop tomorrow, one as a birthday present for my music friend, and another as a thank you gift for my violin teacher.
Go buy it! You don't see an album like this come along very often!
brilliant... violins sound incredible. there is an old story where heifetz forgot his violin and had to borrow one from a local fireman for a concert. it isn't the violin, it is the player. great violins are just much louder and have a slightly better tone.
I´m afraid DVD works only in American system players? I once bought a nice Jean-Luc Ponty live at Montreaux and my european dvd-player couldn´t play it
"Pushing" James Ehnes to his "limits"? I didn't realize that he had limits. I am really looking forward to the release of this DVD--Ehnes is a genius. Thanks so much for the post!
Thank you so much for posting! I was really looking forward for another video of James Ehnes online (there was only the Wieniawski Etude-Caprice until now) and here it is, as flawless as usual! Thanks for the comment, too, I'm gonna buy that DVD tomorrow, it seems very interesting!
Thanks so much for posting this. I hope lots of people see it and buy the DVD because it's so worth it!!! I got it about a week ago and I've been watching it a lot. I really really really love it. James is so amazing (as always) - the repertoire is so much fun to listen to - and it was filmed *so* beautifully, to boot. In fact I think the footage of the violins is worth the purchase price alone. Highly recommended for anybody who is interested in the violin. :)
Does anyone know what the second and third pieces he played are called? Or who they're by?

Just saw James in concert tonight and he is absolutely on the same level of playing with Andre Rieu... what an amazing concert!
