Fish was Marillion , I saw Fish solo in England in 1990 he did a ton of Marillion stuff it was great.. I just don't like the replacement singer and or the music of their new stuff. I respsect them for continuing on but it's just not the same.
Yes, I miss the Fish Marillion. They've done some good stuff (in my opinion) but listening to Vigil or Internal Exile fills me much more. Glorious, and what a production! Got a special place for Incommunicado. That was my GCSE solo performance piece in 1991!
The song and video that got me into this band in the 1980s. Back in those days, in the midwest, you didn't get good music like this, just a lot of pop drivel. But one late night, I saw this video, went out and special ordered the "Clutching At Straws" CD (local disc store did not have it), and I was hooked.
@hamilton797 They are singing the "Gie's a bun anthem". It was sung by the audience at shows and became something of an institution. I miss this those early days so bad.
Awesome song. The Steve Hogarth Marillion doesn't ~rock~ ... This, the whole Clutching At Straws album does! I like some Marillion from Hogarth though ... Those first 3 albums are great, and Afraid Of Sunlight
@stillofthenightcl I think it was the pressure from the rest of the band at the time to come out with something more "lighthearted", which was probably the reason for this song's existence. this clash of musical ideals and differences also led to Fish's ultimate departure... but even this song is much better than almost anything Phil has ever done lyrically (except for perhaps "In the Air Tonight" which I have to admit was quite compelling for a top 40 song!)
Yea it's weird w/ them,as though this is an alt version of the world. Marillion shoulda/coulda been HUGE. This is one reality that created poor results. Some bands need to have their selves intact. i could go on but we know who they are. It's not that their bad just hugely different than before esp the SINGER! Odd the singer looks like he should be the drummer. The keys man looks like the singer. Oh well at least we have the memories of Marillion Pt 1.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Surely this is about as good as it gets. I have always loved this song, still do. It still amuses me the concept of subtitling the Scots guys on the vid. Priceless.
@7zzzzzzz I agree that Marillion had more energy with the charismatic Fish at the helm. But I think that some people are too judgemental of Hogarth. He came in to aid the band because of a situation that wasn't any of his doing.
@7zzzzzzz Agreed. Hogarth has since admitted that had they changed their name at the start, then their image would have been different, and some of their songs might have been quite successful.
@azapro911 They totally alienated me with Holidays in Eden. I then lost track of them and the next thing I heard was This Strange Engine - also poor. Recently I've made the effort to check out the rest of the Hogarth catalog and I do like a lot of it.
What really gets to me is hearing the Fish demos for what become Seasons end. That may just have turned into their best album if he had stayed. Although both Marillion and Fish have good material since the split neither IMHO got better.
@7zzzzzzz Marillion were badly handled by their US label. I've always felt that Kayleigh, Lavender and Incommunicado SHOULD have been big hits in the States. But it all got screwed up, and an exhaustive tour of America didn't help any. Flashes of awesome potential just went wasted. Irritating.
@azapro911 I have been saying that for 25 years. Thanks for getting it azapro911!!..But Capitol @ the time put their money on Poison and those lame hairbands!! What a farce!!
@DasKevKev Hmm, maybe he is in this video cos in the beggining he's dressed up and all, but I normally don't think he's ugly, he's pretty normal to me.
I'll be the first to admit that a lot of Marillion's output (particularly with Fish) was very British, and wouldn't have sold well in America (Heart of Lothian, anyone?) But I cannot figure out for the life of me why Incommunicado wasn't at least a minor hit in the States. Kayleigh and Lavender deserved more attention as well (though Kayleigh did reach the Billboard).
