@BenHutchinson1 KClO3 oxidizes Sugar.in an exothermic reaction, though it only occurs at a high temperature. H2SO4 starts the reaction (only a small bit is needed) by oxidizing the sugar in a slower exothermic reaction. The heat from the H2SO4 allows the KCl03 to oxidize the sugar in the faster more violent reaction that you saw
Did it ignite spontaneously when the sugar came in contact with the KClO3? Should really use KClO4, I hear it's used in fireworks to make gunpowder when mixed with sugar.
THAT WAS SILLY, IT WAS COMPARABLE TO, "GOING BACK TO A FIREWORK, THAT DIDNT GO OFF, TO TRY AND RE-LIGHT IT".....I WISH IT WOULD HAVE GONE OF, WHILE UR HAND WAS IN THERE, I'D CALL U CRISPY FINGERS ;)
My friend did this for a demonstration except we didn't use test tubes. We used a metal plate in the grass outside. Also we did it one time with about 20 times as much chemicals used there. Smelled exactly like roasted marshmallows. Was a good day
BWA HA HA HA HA that's awesome. The whole time I was like that tube's gonna pop that tube's gonna pop...didn't expect it the be the one in the middle that broke though! kekeke
The sulfuric acid reacts with the KClO3 to make chloric acid, which is very unstable and will react with the sugar to bring about the required activation energy -
Sulfuric acid is also able to dehydrate the sucrose into carbon and water. That reaction is exothermic, and concentrated sulfuric acid displays ability to ignite carbohydrates by heating them very hot, and aerial oxygen is able to burn it.
how to stop the burning reaction?
or do you have to wait till all the reactants are gone before you could do anything

So all 3 ingredients are important, KClO3 and sugar and H2SO4? How is each chemical involved in the reaction?

@BenHutchinson1 not when it contact sugar. It ignites when you add sulfuric acid.

@Firesoar13 no they just add some copper chloride for colour. but the reaction is between k chlorate and sugar

however, i don't know how sulphuric acid is involved here.. maybe a catalyst?

But Johnny is no more.
What Johnny thought was H20
was H2SO4.

Little Willy is no more.
What he thought was H20,
Was really H2S04.
So creepy. xD

We learned:
Little Billy took a drink,
But now he'll drink no more;
For what he thought was H20,
Was H2SO4.
(Regardless, someone's in a pret-ty bad way, there. Hehehe!)
Cool video! Makes me remember why I loved chemisty lab! :)
