Thamel has changed a lot, in ways that may not seem 'immediately' obvious to people, but the changes were very evident to me. I first went in the same year as you. 1998.. Returned in 2002, and once again early this year (2009). Far more expensive now, and a noticeably sleazy feel to Thamel. Saying this, there were some nice moments. But there have been several political and cultural upheavals in Nepal since 2002, and it is naturally going to change how people interact, and other factors.
i was in this area,,in 2000,,,i mis nepal,,,i live in pakistan, but i found,,,nepalese people love so much with pakistani people,,nepal is a beautiful country, must go to pokara lake
It takes two to tango (as the saying goes). It's imposible for a culture to be changed (unless there was armed force involved) without the participation and consent of the local people. If Nepal has changed (and it has, in areas) then it can only have happened with Nepalese consent because they perceive (rightly or wrongly) benefits in those changes. Often it is locals who 'create' a western atmosphere in areas in order to 'attract' foreigners for business, feeling that we want familiar things.
And some foreigners allow themselves to be sucked into hugging "home from home", whether that be in Nepal, Thailand, Peru or wherever. Other foriegn visitors are not interested in having home from home when they travel. What I'm saying is that it takes two to tango, when these home from home enclaves appear. If the Nepalese didn't also like it at some level (usually the money) then it would not exist. They would have resisted it. There is no cultural 'invasion' as such.
