somewhere on YT is a clip of Ray talking about this song, and how at a party someone called him fashionable. He took offense, and ended up punching the guy. What a character. Love him to death. (Dave too)
Ray said. "It wasn't a person I was writing about, but a particular group of people, like the trendies. The thing that annoyed me is that they're not the only people like that. Everybody does things because other people do them, whether they think it's right or not. It's as broad a thing as that.
yes the kinks are very much appreciated by all. nice to see all of the input here on utube. very great group of followers, no negativity. my sister brought their album home. i wore it out daily.

so you grew up on the other side of the pond. sure i get it. but tell me what was up with males dressing like females back then? you have to admit it was not a very masculine style some of the shit the mods wore back then.
0:38 that guys really giving it his all xD i <3 this song. this was one of the first kinks songs i ever heard and was the reason i downloaded a load of their stuff. <3
This song is about how someone he was talking to said that the trousers he was wearing wernt in style and that he should be wearing flares so he stormed off and wrote this song on his first go. He was angry bout it so he wrote the song as a sort of joke
buddy it ain't hard to figure it out! ever heard the term light in the loafers? or how about he's a bachelor. those are older terms to describe a homosexual back in the day! now we have men who think they are husbands and wives! wtf? bring me back to the good Ole days when homos were in the closet!
Ever heard the term 'Dandy'? That's what he was. Dandies weren't homosexual. London Mods were very clothes conscious but they weren't (mainly) homosexual. I was on the fringe of the mod scene and this was always just a lampoon of an extreme mod.
Just because he writes a song parodying the gay clothes-hound lifestyle does not make him gay. You neet to watch the 'Set Me Free" B&W video so you will see he is actually a testosterone filled rocker. I would bet money Ray Davies is not gay.
I am from Newfoundland Canada. Grew up on British Rock music, and I feel that the British Rock music WAS,and still IS, the best i have ever heard...they dont make tunes like that anymore. hats off to the KInks!!
I used to sing this song with my guitar to my son when he was two, and he'd laugh and laugh. I just love the tongue and cheek Kinks songs--well, I love all of their 1960s genius.
The problem with music nowadays is a songwriting genius like Davies who happens to look like a gat-toothed freak (like Davies) can't ever get a break while all the pretty boy Good Charlotte fucks with shallow tunes become millionaires. This song predicts that trend perfectly. The Kinks are legendary emblems of a better time culturally and musically.
And I am a Dedicated follower of KinKdom. Have been since 1964 right through the end in 1996 and in to the solo careers of Ray and Dave! God save the KinKs and all their fans who have supported them through the years. And for all we know they still might have a way to go! - Frank Lima, The Mntvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy aka Dan the Fan
This song was a sign of the times, when fashion was moving so fast. Something that was in fashion one week could be out of fashion the next. When this country actualy had some culture. All died by the late 80s.
This song title has been immortallised when it comes to actual fashion. Its always being referenced in fashion related stuff. Its even more famous than the david bowie song 'fashion'.
"...and when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight he feels a dedicated folower of fashion ...". Just a FABULOUS lyric ! And even today, I know of a certain social class of poor uptight self-centred superficialists who STILL actually ACT & THINK this way ! Truth is stranger than fiction, they say. But Ray, as usual, was right on the money !! Another all-time Kinks' GEM, this !!
I envy those who were lucky enough to see The Beatles when they were still playing in clubs. I heard someone recently describe what it was like in the Cavern the first time The Beatles played there after having cut their teeth in Hamburg. He said everyone was dumbfounded by the intensity of their live performance and that nothing like it had ever been seen before in Liverpool. That would have been great to see.
A rollicking damned EXCELLENT clip !! Ray had (has) a biting capacity for wit. AND - in every clip I've ever seen of him and The Kinks, he's always smiling & having a BALL ! And isn't that what a large part of music's supposed to be all about, in the end - FUN and positive entertainment !
wow! luv dis song. had to do an art project entitled A DEDICATED FOLLOWER OF FASHION. i didnt no d kinks b4 but after listenin 2 dis song 50million times 4 inspiration i got hooked!!!
