    :P

  • It is now impossible for me to hear this song without thinking of The World Ends With You.

  • Kinks Rock! Ray Davies is a lyrical legend me thinks

  • THE MOD THEME!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Their songs are always so short :(

  • Can I say that I love his hair? <33

  • Long live

    The Kinks!

  • This week, I have mostly been wearing stripes!

  • @cfcuker I had my polka dot shirt every day :-)

  • 14 dedicated followers of fashion...

  • somewhere on YT is a clip of Ray talking about this song, and how at a party someone called him fashionable. He took offense, and ended up punching the guy. What a character. Love him to death. (Dave too)

  • not political at all

  • It's like an early version of the "dickhead song"

  • Oh yes he is! Ray Davies forever!

  • <3 RAY DAVIES!

  • MODS!

  • Those deticated followers of fashion, are at least something that has stayed along humanity since the 60s.

  • What hard-hitting lyrics!

  • Ray said. "It wasn't a person I was writing about, but a particular group of people, like the trendies. The thing that annoyed me is that they're not the only people like that. Everybody does things because other people do them, whether they think it's right or not. It's as broad a thing as that.

  • THE SIMILAR PRISONERS

    cdbaby(dot)com/cd/similarprisoners

  • pete doherty would sing a great cover of this, the voice :)

  • and when he pulls his frilly nylon panties way up tight.......................

  • What are the first two chords he does in the intro?

  • @chair1234567

sounds D with A in the bass, then A

  • I wear t-shirts and jeans.Im not a dedicated follower of fashion.

  • PROBABLY IN THE TOP 4 OF ALL TIME.

  • He's a little bit essentric but still brillant. Some of you are being a little bit too critical of him. His tunes were brillant.

  • Great fun.

  • yes the kinks are very much appreciated by all. nice to see all of the input here on utube. very great group of followers, no negativity. my sister brought their album home. i wore it out daily.

  • what's the difference if Ray is gay or not?

    he's just a great artist!

    super song!! ;)

  • Stylish player, with the ability to subordinate his ego to the song. Unlike many others.

  • For 20 years I fought the rumour that I was a heroin addict because I wore long sleeved shirts onstage. Pay it no mind. They were wrong. I'm an alcoholic

  • at the time Ray wrote R&R Fantasy I already had over 150 kinks shows under my belt, and as of this moment in time

well let's see approximetely 300 kinks shows, 135 Ray solo shows, and 65 Dave solol shows, and Ray has said the Dan the Fan chartacter was me, so I still stake my claim.

  • Gerundino, yeah I do want a medal?

  • I've put one in the post

  • so british! such a master!

good old RAY, cockney north landaner

  • i had the chance to see ray davies live a couple years ago, but didn't because i wasn't much of a kinks fan. now i adore them and am kicking myself for not going. iiiidiot! :(

  • I did the same thing with Beck when I was 15, grew up with the kinks luckily my old man was a fan.

  • From "before my time..." then again so pertinent ...they seem to just have the right to say...yesterday... today and tomorrow...

    Bernard

  • Still one of the best songwriters in popular music.

  • 0:38 that guys really giving it his all xD i <3 this song. this was one of the first kinks songs i ever heard and was the reason i downloaded a load of their stuff. <3

  • This song is about how someone he was talking to said that the trousers he was wearing wernt in style and that he should be wearing flares so he stormed off and wrote this song on his first go. He was angry bout it so he wrote the song as a sort of joke

  • omg they cant mean XD i am from denmark and have to translate this to danish ;D but it is going to be funny XD

  • this has been my summer's song! Love it!

  • talent it's called

  • love this song!!!!

  • this song is really about a vain homosexual back in the mod sceen of the 60's

  • Really? Could have fooled me. I thought it was about a truck driver in Duluth, Iowa.

  • @moorlock2003

Y yo que pensaba que la canción hablaba de ladrones de tumbas en Glasgow...

  • @moorlock2003

i think you mean Duluth, Minnesota....nevermind it, your point was made.

  • Who on earth said he was homosexual?

  • buddy it ain't hard to figure it out! ever heard the term light in the loafers? or how about he's a bachelor. those are older terms to describe a homosexual back in the day! now we have men who think they are husbands and wives! wtf? bring me back to the good Ole days when homos were in the closet!

  • Ever heard the term 'Dandy'? That's what he was. Dandies weren't homosexual. London Mods were very clothes conscious but they weren't (mainly) homosexual. I was on the fringe of the mod scene and this was always just a lampoon of an extreme mod.

  • Just because he writes a song parodying the gay clothes-hound lifestyle does not make him gay. You neet to watch the 'Set Me Free" B&W video so you will see he is actually a testosterone filled rocker. I would bet money Ray Davies is not gay.

  • Mods

  • amazin quality, cheers boss

  • I am from Newfoundland Canada. Grew up on British Rock music, and I feel that the British Rock music WAS,and still IS, the best i have ever heard...they dont make tunes like that anymore. hats off to the KInks!!

  • Not a great lover of Rock...but the Kinks were an exception , I agree

  • Noel Fielding really reminds me of him. :O

  • Supposedly, he wrote this after someone took the pee out of a shirt he was wearing. And to be fair, look at the state of the one he's got on here :)

  • he wrote it after someone took the piss out of his trousers actually!

  • 'No one is here for art"

    Ray Davies is a genius.

  • It's "No-one's here for us", not art.

  • no he says 'art'

  • Oh. Yeah you're right. My bad.

  • @Douwuh a genius! you can't utter such nonsense unless you are drunk or insane!

  • Casual song!

  • To anyone who finds himself in this song: All the followers of the fashion of the world - unite! )))))))):D

  • I love his clever enunciation in this song :)

  • wiked

  • I graduated high school in 1973 and In Concert was great as were The Kinks!!

  • thanks god i was a young guy in the sixties....fashion was something inspiring, now its just ugly and boring...true...

  • wrong.

  • you're so lucky...

  • this kinky guy luvs THE KINKS!!

  • I thank you, ayeeee.

    Haha!

    Fab.

  • I heard on the NYC Radio today that the Kinks might get back together. Thanks Tricia for the send. Great post gustav.

  • Love this great song!!

    (for the Kreme..lol)

    Thanks Tric great share!

  • I used to sing this song with my guitar to my son when he was two, and he'd laugh and laugh. I just love the tongue and cheek Kinks songs--well, I love all of their 1960s genius.

  • Gotta love Ray and The Kinks. Superb songwriter and social commentator! Thanks for posting.

  • The problem with music nowadays is a songwriting genius like Davies who happens to look like a gat-toothed freak (like Davies) can't ever get a break while all the pretty boy Good Charlotte fucks with shallow tunes become millionaires. This song predicts that trend perfectly. The Kinks are legendary emblems of a better time culturally and musically.

  • fair point.

  • And I am a Dedicated follower of KinKdom. Have been since 1964 right through the end in 1996 and in to the solo careers of Ray and Dave! God save the KinKs and all their fans who have supported them through the years. And for all we know they still might have a way to go! - Frank Lima, The Mntvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy aka Dan the Fan

  • same story here, Frank but sorry, I was Dan the Fan waaaaaaaaay back but if you wish to challenge that, answer this question: from what literary

source does ray nip the intro to this song?

    salutations

    A Misfit

    on Whitby

or you could be dan east and I can be dan west?

    marvelous video, ray looooooooks Great!

  • This song was a sign of the times, when fashion was moving so fast. Something that was in fashion one week could be out of fashion the next. When this country actualy had some culture. All died by the late 80s.

  • Soooooooooooooperb LOL

  • I tried this song and posted it, check it out if you get a chance!

    I love this song!!

  • the audience participation, IMO, is better than the original

  • It might just be my ignorance of literature, but I always thought Oscar Wilde would have been happy with that one.

  • "Let's have a laugh,no-one's here for the art.." Priceless..

  • aaaaaah,

    i love this song

  • they sang about interesting topics. cool

  • This song title has been immortallised when it comes to actual fashion. Its always being referenced in fashion related stuff. Its even more famous than the david bowie song 'fashion'.

  • "...and when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight he feels a dedicated folower of fashion ...". Just a FABULOUS lyric ! And even today, I know of a certain social class of poor uptight self-centred superficialists who STILL actually ACT & THINK this way ! Truth is stranger than fiction, they say. But Ray, as usual, was right on the money !! Another all-time Kinks' GEM, this !!

  • Ok?

  • I envy those who were lucky enough to see The Beatles when they were still playing in clubs. I heard someone recently describe what it was like in the Cavern the first time The Beatles played there after having cut their teeth in Hamburg. He said everyone was dumbfounded by the intensity of their live performance and that nothing like it had ever been seen before in Liverpool. That would have been great to see.

The Kinks? I saw them twice. They rule.

  • Who care about hes teeth is god of british pop and rock n roll just enjoy the song man

  • A rollicking damned EXCELLENT clip !! Ray had (has) a biting capacity for wit. AND - in every clip I've ever seen of him and The Kinks, he's always smiling & having a BALL ! And isn't that what a large part of music's supposed to be all about, in the end - FUN and positive entertainment !

  • And society is STILL filled with dedicated followers of fashion!! A timeless theme

  • what a rock n roll crowd

  • cooler than the beatles, no?

  • In performance terms obviously... Beatles change music, but The Kinks were great.

  • They're both great, why choose when we can have both? =]

  • exactly!

The music shouldn't be competition as it tends to be. It should be a message, or an outlet from the musician to his crowd.

    Enjoy Music!

    Enjoy Life!

  • OH MY GOD !!!

  • great short version of the song

  • Pity he skipped half of the verses.

  • i really ike this song, i wank to it the whole time so i do

  • Great classic post -

  • Hahhahaha! Great Pop song....!

  • The 60's belonged to England and this is a prime example of why. I love The Kinks, and every thing they did.

  • Great song! Oh yes it is :)

  • Yeoah Boy Kick Ass! ~0~1~

  • Ray Davies - barking mad and one of England's finest songwriters!

  • What a Song! Cool!

  • wooooooooo!

  • VG Song

  • Kinks were the business , Brilliant and still be listened to now forty years later ...

  • I intended to give this five stars ... computers aren't perfect, for sure. That one-star rating is 100% unintentional. Ray Davies is a certifiable genius.

  • Ray is nuts! But you gotta love him.

    God Save The Kinks!

  • that was a bit too 'throwaway'

  • great song, beatleslike !!!!

  • the best ever.and you dont know how bad i felt when ray was in a lame episode on married with children with dave clarke etc.gawd this man is a genius

  • wow they're great..

  • Thank god for the Carnabetian Army!

  • so simple, yet it's so goddamn genuis

  • Always great to see these guys perform.

  • I love the Davies brothers! I love that music and Ray is a killer..(#Oh, yes he is...oh, yes he is...")...thank you for the video!

  • I hate it when bands do a rushed runthrough of one of their hits, as if they don't care about it anymore. This is an example of that.

  • extract!

  • Is this an extra from a longer footage? Is it available on some DVD on Amazon?

  • It's not available commercially. But you can find the whole gig on a bootleg DVD...

  • Where oh where can we buy this bootleg DVD?

  • ray davies tenia un cabello hermozo.

  • ilove ray's nasty gap in his teeth! I want one!

  • lolol

  • FAB !

  • Dedicated follower of the Kinks!

  • i think they are handsome when they were young, but they really lost their looks. they also suck playing live.

  • that's a fucking silly question but everytime i see them i wonder why they hate each other

  • ray and dave are very pretty even when they have bad hair.

  • And groovy bow ties!!
