I am an American, ignorant of Hindi -- and other languages of India. This is wonderful: musically, cinematically, and dramatically. What a great tradition of the use of song in movies is revealed by songs like this!
In those days they portrayed the role of a prostitute in such a graceful manner But nowadays even a role of a homely girl is portrayed as a hooker in some item song or other. Long live Waheeeda Rehman! Long Live Guru Dutt's movies! Waheeda though being Urdu-speaking comes from my state, Tamilnadu. I feel proud the Southies those days dominated Bollywoodm, Guru Dutt included!
If I am not wrong this song is composed by the LEGEND S.D.BURMAN. This song is in accordance to one of his bengali song.....S.D.BURMAN was the only music director who was ahead of his time........talents like him are missing nowadays..........I being a modern boy of 17yrs dont fear to say that we dont hear "TRUE INDIAN MUSICS"
The very first time I saw the film I fell in love with this song!,and ofcourse that inimitable actor Waheeda Rahman! lilting tune ,although a rehash of of his own tune in Bengali, "Mono maaney na bodhu" Sachin dev Burman, has infused life into the beautiful lyrics of Sahir.Pyaasa is a story of a budding rebellious poet who has to fight his way through to stardom. Sahir's poems are par excellence but my favourite songs from this film are ,this one and "Ye Mehlon ye Taqhton ye taajon key duniya"
The beginning recital is the same ghazal duet as "Phir na kije meri gustaakh nigahi ka gila" from Phir Subah Hogi. Especially Asha's part of the duet.
I love Waheeda-Guru pairing; they compliment each other even in Kagaaz Ke Phool & Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Jaane Kya Tune Kahi has got to be my favorite song of Pyaasa.
i am told-and this needs to be confirmed-that sahir was made to listen to the original version of this song in bengali. and asked to write the lyrics for it .he did a masterful job, one way or another.
The scratchy sound of this beautiful lyric reduces the joy of the listener, but all that is made up for by the lovely Waheeda R's acting with her enthralling eye movements and smile. So I keep going back to this clip. Indeed, Waheeda was a bright star in both her looks and her talent and she was invariably classy in her demeanor. She defined her roles far more than her roles defined her. Thanks for the post.
it is a good song.
Geeta Dutt seems to impress me more than Lata's bland singing.

Today´s actors could learn a thing or two about emoting by watching Waheeda -ji.
The sheer beauty of this song makes one speechless ..
