  • Thank you so much, Karma342 for sharing all of these videos. I was only 7 or 8 when I visited the church that (all I could remember) the choir that walked into the church on both isles singing "It's A Highway To Heaven".After talking to friends about the church, I awoke this morning and the name Doris Akers popped into my head. I am so enjoying all of the entries that you have put on the net. I am 61 now and I so appreciate your sharing. Thank you.

  • Jazzy, I received your message but am unsure how to continue chatting. I would love to talk with you re the days of the Sky Pilot Choir and the blessings of singing under Doris Akers. I'm in southern California. I wonder how many are still around?

  • karma, Lead Me Guide can be found at wn.com/Sky_Pilot_(song)

  • woke up this a.m. with this ringing in my heart--Doris & The Sky Pilot Choir--Every Time I Feel The Spirit (I'm thinking I should pray, so I will~!)

  • Woke up this a.m. with Doris and the Sky Pilot Choir singing...in my heart (how wonderful to wake up like this)

  • You can sit still listening to this one. :) I've listened to it 4 times already and faved it. Be blessed in YHWH.

  • thanks for this musical history, gospel was/is never better than when Doris was composing and singing. thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • This sounds so much like the choirs I heard in church when I was growing up. The music was lively and the pianists were all like Doris Akers or Jimmy Swaggart.

  • This sounds so much like alot of the choirs I heard when I was growing up.

  • I remember the night Doris walked into our small rag-tag choir room. There were about 30 of us and we were preparing for the Friday night broadcast and Sunday service. She walked to the front of the room, looked at us and struck a chord on the piano. What began that night blessed those of us who got to sing under her direction. People who listened to the Sky Pilot, Aubrey Lee, began to come to church and soon the Revival Center (which was an old movie theater) was filled to capacity.

  • My wife and I went on our way before Doris left the Sky Pilot Church. After our departure, Pastor J. Aubrey Lee had a major stroke. Later Doris left for the east and I have no idea what transpired at Sky Pilot after that.

  • Oh, such wonderful memories. Marching down the aisle singing "Highway..." and then on our knees around the alter singing "Lead Me, Guide Me". And, the bright red seats and curtains matching our silver robes with the red sashes. Stunning. The music and spirit kept the church full most of the time. I recall often sitting with Doris in her big, white Caddy talking about the music and the church, et al. I could go on and on. Thank you for posting all of this wonderful music. Dick A.

  • @echo415 Please tell us more!! I attended from 1960 till 1963. Whatever happened to Shirley and her sisters? I can still remember the processional and invocation Lead Me Guide Me..haven't seen anything like it since....

  • @echo415 what an incredible heritage, Echo~! This lady and OUR music never fails to fill me with just joy--I was raised on this music and had the joy of singing in the Glad Tidings Temple Vancouver choir, which choir Doris trained us to sing the gospel her way...glory~!!

  • 4freespeech has said it so very well. We need to remember that Jesus is Victor and God is Still on the Throne. We need to "reactivate" the Holy Spirit in our lives. Need to get back in the Word of God , meditate on His Words and rejoice and tell all about the LOVE of Jesus Christ. AMEN!

  • Brothers and sisters, we're gonna have to get the SHOUT back in our churches during these hard times if we're gonna make it! ENOUGH of the "health and wealth gospel"! If you're healthy and wealthy, fine. But IF NOT, PRAISE JESUS ANYWAY! Praise Him on the piano, praise Him on the organ, praise Him on the trumpets, praise Him on the cymbals, praise Him on the high-sounding cymbals... PRAISE YE THE LORD!
  • I'm soooooo glad I've found this post! It takes me to my childhood, when my beloved daddy , who was a Baptist pastor here in Brazil, used to listen this music and other ones... He taught me to love the sacred music, since I was too young! I totally agree with irinacar!!!

  • Wow this was tremendous! I loved the great harmony and music. How I wish we could go back to the songs that actually meant something!

  • This is best version i bumped into so far.

  • This sounds great they sound in so much harmony with one another. Unfortunately music isn't as good as it used to be, Doris Aker's music proves there was good gospel music back then.

  • Doris you make me want to cry and dance at the same time. Thanks again Karma.

  • Thanks so much for your sincere words!

I am glad you enjoy the music of this immensely talented composer! God bless you!

  • Could you post Doris Akers and the Choir singing Lead Me Guide Me from the album Doris Aketrs sings with the Sky Pilot Choir. It's my daily prayer, and so moving on the album.

  • Yea, I LOVE the way she sings it on that album! Its more of a prayer on there, right? Ok I will probably put it up sometime this week... Look out for it! God bless you ;)

  • thanks for the posting

  • Do you have the last album by the Sky Pilot Choir after Doris left? It was done in the late 60's when Shirley Mays took over the choir. It was called Sky Pilot flight 7:15.

  • No I dont have that one... what are the tracks on it?

  • I am so thankful that we can pray anytime

and anywhere - Praise the Lord.

    this song is so encouraging!

  • Thanks for your comment! Please watch my other Doris Akers uploads and God bless!!

  • "H" !! thank you, thank you for putting me on to this link. Going to let mom know about now. love, M

  • All I can say is God Bless You for sharing

my Great Aunts music with the world again!

  • Thanks sooo much for your comment! Your aunt was incredibly musically talented and there will NEVER be another like her!! God bless you!

  • I feel tha Spirit!!!!

  • This picture brings back many memories when I attended this church in the 60's. I sat in the front row so I could see Doris and Shirley Mays. I have all of Doris Akers's & the Choir's albums also. You won't find a choir like this again...Listen to that harmony.!!

  • I'm glad you liked the picture:-) It was given to me by a friend of Doris, who received it from her. You're very fortunate to have attended this church when Doris was there:-)

  • I love this song! Doris' voice is great!

  • I find myself singing this song often! It's a beautiful song, and it's arranged in a way only Doris could arrange it. Most of the other versions I've heard aren't as powerful and Spirit-filled as this!

  • man! everytime i hear this song i

i get soul power and just wanna burst out and preach :)

  • Well that's great! ;-)
