I recall one episode where these kids had a large inflatible reptile that they set up right off the coast (ala Loch Ness) to fool the locals. Turns out the genuine creature was out there as well. Ring any bells?
I remember part of one, where a little girl drowns. Her brother is kneeling over her, and she's lying on her back with her head toward the camera. She looked like a girl I knew at the time. I don't remember the title or anything else, just that.
@CBSCFFestival I found the DVD of this film at a grocery store and it brought back memories for me of the CBS Children's Film Festival. I had to buy it. Do you remember "Fatty & Skinny?"
I recently re-discovered "Paddle to the Sea". My little boy loves it.
I wonder if anyone remembers a film that involved a small boy being tied to a post by two other boys and left there? The tide started to come in and threatened to drown the boy tied to the post.
Paddle to the Sea is an NFB masterpiece. Great to hear your young one loves it. The film you mentions sounds familiar and I can picture it but cant help u with the title. sori
@lindylindy99 yes I remember it seems like they showed this as a Christmas special it use to come on every year & the boy has a portable radio tied on his cap and finds a cat in an abanded house. The boy feeds the cat tuna that he buys on credit at the store he mom doesn't know it.
I remember the one from Japan..."Fat and Skinny" (?). 2 boys were good friends, but during the school year they had to go to separate schools. I was so sad about that. I remember the one calling to the other, "Komatsu!" It broke my heart. I was angry with Japan after that one. Not sure I'm over it.
I loved this show. The movies stayed with me all my life. White Mane was my favorite, as Hand-in-Hand and the Blind Bird. It made me appreciate foreign films later in life. Someone re-release these again so that children can enjoy them now.
The English dub of "Blind Bird" was released in the '90s in a series called "Specially for Kids". It is out of print, but copies are still available on places such as Ebay and the public library.
"Hand in Hand" has been broadcast many times since early 2007 on basic cable. To date it has never been released commercially, although 16mm prints are still floating around.
Wonderful films. I watched this every Saturday morning with a plate of buttered toast at my then home in West Vancouver. Moving to London years later, I still recall the children's adventures I imagined would eventually become a reality for me, travelling around Europe, Africa, Far East. A magical time in my childhood and a benchmark for the rest of my life.
I have a lot of fond memories. I think that it planted the seed for me to be interested in
other cultures. I believe it's important to have shows like that so that people, especially
children would see that there are more similarities than differences, so that different kinds of people are not strange. The earliest one I remember was Tiko and The Shark and the latter ones were The Shopping Bag Lady and Winter of the Witch, etc. One other show was Big Blue Marble; because of it I had pen pals.
Suggested live announcer tag at :55- "Saturday afternoon at 1, 12 Central Time, over most of these stations".

I wish that that eskimo kid didn't toss that poor wolf cub into the air.

I.I.N.M., the V/O on this spot was CBS New York staff announcer Norm Stevens, famous for "The CBS Late Movie."

I never knew his name, but thanks to the Late Movie, I heard his voice countless times.

The Canadian equivalent of this was Peanuts & Popcorn on the CBC. It carried many of the same productions from around the world.
