@KjeXXXer There's no unique version because it was a poem he wrote many times with different variations. See: Two "A Thousand Kisses Deep" recitations from 1997-1998 in the leonardcohenforum web site.
Take any line from a Leonard Cohen song., Google it, and you will find sites with his lyrics and poems..hundreds....such a wordsmith...such a man...love him.
My first love is the only person I can think of when I hear this... Makes me want to sink a thousand kisses deep and tell again all those promises I kept.
have been listening to Leonard Cohen for thirty years now and he is much better than what we learn in school. Does anyone one think that "only God can make a tree" is real poetry???
wheres the rest?? nice though he doesnt do most of that in his concert, but the part he does is awesome! best cooncert I've ever seen! nicest guy too;)
I think everybody can relate to Leonard Cohen. Even in the photograph to this video. It's simply Leonard with his eyes closed. You can tell he is thinking of something beautiful. I think everybody has a had a moment like in their life, when they just close their eyes and feel the beauty. Whether it is a memory, a poem, or a song.
You forgot the Caution label. Handle this one with Care. Don't listen without a net. Even if it is imaginary. If this one gets into you, there are 10,000 barbs that won't let it back out. There is a Point of No return! Past that point, it can only come out the other side. There is no one meaning. It is a revolving door of thought, and no real exit, ever... Every time you listen, there is an additional avenue to stroll,... You'll have have to walk it alone.. forever, alone.Thank You for posting
One question, Is The Garden of Earthly Delights - Hieronymus Bosch (painting google it) a vision, a prophecy, of America and 9/11. God thats all i see.
@biermeister888 You can find it in the information of the video, just click the button with the double downward arrow below the number of visits. Or you are talking about a printed book?
This poem has many different versions, and yet it always seems to me to be the same poem. His ability to keep a feeling and a tone is incredible. This is the most touching poem I've ever heard, no matter how he chooses to phrase it.
i saw leonard cohen here in NZ last month. If anyone recited (with feeling) this poem to me, I would melt in a pool at their feet. Verry sexy!! and so beautiful. he was of course sublime.
It seems like this poem is about failure, lies, and deception. That most people rather live a fake life, rather than be your true self. All these people are talking about "beauty" but are not really specifically talking about what is beautiful here.
@maritimemoose if Tom Waits and Cohen ever play together, my life would be complete. I wasn't able to see Waits, last time, but I have seen Cohen 4 times. I am so fortunate to have seen him live!
@benkit49 Perhaps the perception of genius is relative becuase in my own sultry, uneducated secret life this man is a massive influence. More than just one of the greatest living poets. I see him as a master lyricist and songsmith. @RufusProgpower - To be a great living poet is a greater accomplishment than being a master lyricist and songsmith. Whether he stands up as even a minor poet among the dead poets is another question
Well, excellent ! Leonard Cohen wrote a sung version, too. I have it very well sung by his great friend who revealed him as a singer, Judy Collins (in her CD dedicated to Leonard Cohen)
LC is poetry, if you like this then check out the song. Literally living proof that lyrics / poetry do not play second fiddle. With this man, there is no second fiddle...
@skollbus I wouldn't say beautiful; haunting might be a better term. It's absolutely brilliant, of course; Cohen in full flow, his insight and talent at their truly spectacular best.
I am very grateful to you for giving us the lyrics, I enjoyed reading them as I was listening to him.
If anyone wants to hear this sung on youtube, there is a 52 seconds Handsome Family cover, Brett Sparks is more spellbinding than Jeff Buckley. One of the most beautiful songs on youtube.
I've heard at least 3 different versions of this beautiful poem. Each one speaks to the soul. Each touches me in a slightly different way. Each one expresses the genius of this wonderful man.

Does anyone know where to find this exact recording? I need to own it; this is amazing. By far my favorite version. Cohen fails to disappoint as always.
saw him last week in dublin.. wonderful rendition of this amazing poem.
all he had was a spot light and the organ in the background... its great to get lost in a voice as it happens so rarely. i always feel honoured to have seen and heard such a man as unique talent such as Mr Cohens is a rare comodity these days.
when will the world see that image is nothing and the true substance of music dwells within the heart.
I saw him in concert on 5-6-2009 in Chicago. He recited this poem. The best concert I've attended in a long time, if ever. He gave a three (3) hour performance of the highest quality. He sounds exactly the same as on his cds. Also his band crew is awesome and multitalented! He was very generous and gave it his all! He returned to the stage 4 times to the audience loud applause and even said beautiful well-wishes to all in the end. And the man is 75 years old almost! He is G-d Sent!
Leonard's lyrics and music move me to my core. I feel as if he is expressing my deep, dark feelings and putting them to words. You must see him in concert if you can--it is a wonderful experience.
I just met this man's work a month ago and am working double-time to catch up on all that i've lost. What an illumination he is. Oh how I wish I could get to Denver for the Red Rocks concert.
I saw Leonard in concert in Vancouver on April 19th and he recited this poem. No words to describe it ... nobody can speak these words like Leonard, not just because he wrote them, but his voice is just so powerful, so deep, and moving. The whole show was incredible, and 3 hrs long.
seeing him would make him mortal, but just being present when he recites or sings or moves or doesn't, his aura, his mmaculate being would, ooooh i don't know. there is no praise fr him, it transcends words, images. does he realise what he's done to so many people?

Eroticism so eloquently described. I am a big fan of Cohen's metaphors, from the top of my head:
"Your hair upon the pillow, like a sleepy golden storm" - Hey That's no Way To Say Goodbye
"It was curling just like smoke above his shoulder" - The Stranger

Not that I want to box Leonard in to a fixed meaning, but does anyone want to take a stab at these lyrics:
I ran with Diz and I sang with Ray
I never had their sweep
But once or twice they let me play
A thousand kisses deep
Did Leonard Cohen ever colaborate with Dizzy Gillespie or Ray Charles?
The poem seems to be addressed to a lover, BUT
When he recites the last line, he usually lifts his eye skyward, as if he is addressing a supreme being, or perhaps a lost loved one. Any thoughts?

I was there, in Seattle a few weeks ago. This piece brought me to tears, as did many others. Easily one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
He had every one of us in the palm of his hand, and it felt great, I will never forget it.

He moves me like no other. This poem speaks to me like a lover's whisper in the night.

I saw his concert in Seattle recently, and he also recited this poem. I simply adore his voice for poetry; it's not the same read by anyone else.
