@elevatorisland I assume you are the guy who commented in the forum? Anyway, me and others replied there. Mike Patton is an obvious baritone voice because of his natural timbre and tessitura. His incredible technique just allows him to make good tenor impersonations.
i hate to be the jerk, especially since i love patton, but this is not great. not terrible, but not great. undeniably he's a great singer but he's obviously untrained for this kind of singing, just listen to pavarotti(sp) or one of the other greats do this and you'll see the difference. i do love his guts and the fact he will never back down from a challenge. i always look forward to what he'll do next.
@GoodGuitarSolos I always thought he was a tenor but now I see everyone online says he's a baritone. the "examples" people post online to show his range and color are bad examples. how and why is this guy a baritone and not a tenor??
@abby1261 Firecracker. It's a movie he starred in after Dennis Hopper opted out of the leading role. The production Company was Dikenga. Happy googleing. (O:
You're right; still I give him props for trying something new.According to Mike, projecting without a microphone was very difficult for him. I think he has a definite respect for opera.
@tenor529 yes but opera is always sang in a context. Paliachi sang as a suicidal clown would, Figaro as a lunatic holding sharp instruments, the Fat Lady as harbinger. Only the context of this peice is pretension. The single unifying factor in all these instances is the preformer allows the listener to hear what they wish wether they like it or not.
Well, he is sure an excelent singer, but I just can't like the msot of his material. The way he sings is great, but the lyrics, the instrumentals... Just isn't my type of music.
For me it just seems to be unbelievable, that someone, who started to look through Mike's videos was not enchanted by his personality. I also don't rave about Every singe song he does, but still HE'S MY GOD!!! :)).
Why was this rated down? I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like some of his crazier stuff, I'm still having trouble getting into his more recent projects even though Mike Patton is one of my favourite vocalists.
You should check out the band Faith no More and the ablum California by Mr Bungle, they're a bit more radio-friendly than most of his other stuff. The Director's cut by Fantomas is also good.
There is a song Simply Beautiful, and it's my favorite of Fantomas :) Surely, the way Mike sings it is amazing, but there is one guitar solo (it's very easy to guess wich one) that always makes me laugh, when I hear it :)
We made kind of forum here :) But still I want to comment the Al Green version. To tell the truth I heard it for the first time, thanks to you. And I was really surprised, that Mike sang it so close to the original. Well, the main difference for me (if not mention Mike's BESTFOREVER voice, sorry; I couldn't stand saying it:)), so the main difference is that Mike gives increadable energy to everything he does. I can feel it, moreover I can take it and I feel like I was an energetic vampire :))
I can't agree, that Mr.Bungle is "radio-friendly". Rather Peeping Tom and Lovage, but still they are not in the radio, at least in my country, pity :(

@barbc713 1. Mike Patton is baritone singer, his imitation of tenor singer here is fantastically done.
2. He isn't classically trained, once again really valiant and strong attempt from somebody who isn't trained in classical music.
3. That fucking intro high C is one of the best high Cs ever from baritone singer.

One of my all-time favourite vocalists! He can sing anything; That high C is amazing, especially when considering that Mike is a baritone!

@tenor529 and what your point?

That's surely an amazing performance. This guy surely can sing. Too bad I just hate everything else he did.

WHAT???!! Are you sure? Listen to Mondo Cane... He sings there quite similar

Monda Cane is not bad, for my taste.

This is absolutely amazing, I never knew Mike could perform opera like this. Mike Patton is God.

Thanks for the recommendations, both of you.
I actually liked some Faith no More songs (the ones without that rapping thing), and I am looking for that Mr. Bungle album.
About that song, it's very nice, great singing, and yes, very strange guitar solo. But I still prefer the version sung by Al Green.

@eduardorickrot Well, that's the limitations of your own mind at work. Perhaps you should take a closer look at fantomas
